A political essay is more critical and analytical in the manner in which it handles the subjects under consideration.
I had a student write me an essay about how to make a bracelet with a rainbow loom. Well, she spent the time on the essay, so I spent the time following her instructions about how to make a bracelet. Here are the instructional essay and the bands.

The CIA’s Agency Network of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Officers and Allies (ANGLE) – one of the CIA’s many Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) – spearheaded a series of events last month to celebrate LGBT Pride Month. These events included a photography exhibit titled, “HEART: Sharing Our LGBT Families with Our Agency Family.” ANGLE created the exhibit to showcase CIA officers’ thoughts on family, diversity and inclusion. Below is a selection from the exhibit.

Props to my sister for taking the shot of this particular picture in the end.
I picked the things I took pictures of due to convenience, location, aesthetics, timeliness, and flair amongst other things. I decided to mostly take pictures due to my interests and passions. I took over 50 pictures including the ones I actually posted.
The biggest disappointment for me might easily be some of my lighting situations, though the angles were more fun to perfect. I also worry that the things I picked are not the most suiting for this assignment. The pictures made me realize that the range of things that I am actually interested in is not quite the same as it was about 4 years ago. I now identify with more things than ever.
Some of the pictures had a prototype or two, particularly the pictures involving my computer and my fight stick game controller. The fight stick controller almost also had a arcade cabinet-shaped bank next to it, but that didn't happen.
I took a picture of a fight-stick because I love video fighting games. I took a picture of myself, because I initially thought it was part of the assignment. I took a picture of a dragon statue at Sunnyvale GolfLand because I like playing miniature golf. I took a picture of a winning hand in BananaGrams because I like word games and languages. I took a picture of my computer and tablet pen, since I am a 2d computer animator in my spare time. I took a picture of my class ring since it is one of my most proud personal possessions.

A young girl who has just been accepted into one of the most prestigious art schools in North America, was over for a visit. She was to start in September and while she was waiting for her student visa to come through (she is from the US)she was cleaning stables and feeding horses. She loved the horses and did not mind the work. But there she sat before me, beyond miserable as she recounted to me the number of owners who were making her life a living hell and reducing her to tears on a daily basis. Needed the money, needed the job; did not need the abuse. She wanted to quit. She wanted to turn down her acceptance. She wanted to retreat across the 49th parallel.
To give you a bit of background on the owners - A bit of Canadian history, particularly British Columbia is that certain areas were predominantly settled yea those many years ago, by the second son’s of British nobility. Here they duplicated the large, landed estates and all the trappings that went along with where they had spent their childhoods. These colonists are more British than the British and still adhere to traditions that have been considerable watered down in the “motherland” with the passage of time.
Existing in this time warp, their days are spent “gadding about” and figuring out new and wonderful ways to spend the gobs of money dolled out to them through trusts. They treat their stable “help” worse much worse that is been cleaned out of the stalls and mete out much the same treatment to anyone else they deem to be “beneath” them. As I am listening to this young girl pour out her distress as to how she is being treated I can feel this vortex of energy building up and sucking me into it. I used to ride in the Fox Hunt with many of these people and those of their ilk. I know of what this young lady speaks. So I feel this vortex pulling at both my ankles and I’m having a real time of it keeping my coaching pants on.
I have felt the disdain of which she spoke directed towards me as I insisted on riding bareback in the “Fox Hunt” (major break with tradition) often with my hardhat on backwards as it tended to fall down on the bridge of my nose when going over jumps, thus impairing my vision. I was a particular thorn in the side to those who wore the “redcoats” but most tolerated me because of my parents who organized the scented route of the hunt utilizing our land as our neighbours. This coupled with the fact that if their well bred, dual named steeds, out of Noble Question by Kingdom Ruler refused a jump or a part of the run, I would bring my *Out of Kamloops by Truck* (see footnote) wonder horse Jerry to the head of the field and lead these horses at least two names city-slicker pampered sissies through whatever it was that was distressing them – most often it was mud. One day one “chap” could no longer contain his outrage and riding up tome with steam trailing behind him he puffed out in a very commanding tone, “You are dismissed from the field.” I shot back at him the only defense I could grab onto, “You can’t dismiss me, my parents are…..so and so….. Well what can I say, feeble yes, taking responsibility no, but it worked. All this came to mind and much, much more as the young girl was sharing her story and I could feel the pull…BIG SUCKING WITCH ONE….and what pulled me out was“agreement creates reality which is different from the truth”. I recognized that I could not help her if I continued going into agreement with her on how horrible these people were and how victimized she was by their treatment. Another pull out of the sucking vortex – in order to help the person in front of me I had to put her FIRST. When I did that, a miracle occurred.
The sobbing, wretched girl left an aspiring artist with an amazing future ahead of her. All I did was ask her to take the viewpoint of an artist. Then I asked her if she could duplicate on canvas and in clay the features and moods of those people she was having difficulty with. She said that she could. I told her that Van Gogh swept floors and cleaned up paint for years before he picked up a brush. I asked her if she could view these people as stepping stones to her fulfilling her dream of becoming an accomplished artist by using these people as "models" - not to aspire to be like but to study as "subjects". "Yes, she answered excitedly, "yes, yes, I can!" Her face brightened even more as I asked her if she could imagine the people who were giving her a hard time now, clambering to purchase one of her works in the future, she’s an artist – she totally got the vision of that. Then I asked her if she could approach her work at the stables as part of her study to master her craft. She laughed and said, Yes! I phoned her a couple of weeks later and asked her how it was going at work, she said, “It’s great, they don’t treat me like that anymore.”
This young lady is now currently finishing up her studies at the prestigious Emily Carr Institute ofArt and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia.
*Footnote
*Kamloops is a city in the heart of "cattle country" in the interior of the province of British Columbia. For those of you unfamiliar with horse breeding the bloodlines are traced through dam and sire with the offspring being referred to as Out of (name of dam) By (name of sire). While the other "steeds" in the hunt were as blue blooded as their owners, Jerry was the horse version of a mutt hence my description of his bloodlines - Out of Kamloops by Truck (the means by which he was transported to the Fraser Valley in the Lower Mainland area of the province)
Essay comparing side benefits from the virus to effects of a carbon tax.
Economic downturn, due to the virus, has reduced greenhouse gas emissions, but it's still not enough reduction for us to reach climate stabilization goals.
I got to thinking that a carbon tax could have similar effects as the virus. The virus has had lots of bad effects, but some good side effects, including reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. A carbon tax might have some of the good effects, but be more controlled. The virus has hit us blindsided.
Good effects from a carbon tax that could be similar to the good side effects of the virus are things like this.
More telecommuting. If fossil fuel were to be more expensive, there would less commuting and more people able to work from home. The virus has had a similar effect.
Another effect is, in my opinion, the benefits of a slower economy, or at least less rat race. Less time and energy devoted to just working and consuming.
Most people, however, don't seem to aspire to a slower economy. Unlike the virus, a carbon tax could transfer wealth into green energy development. Green energy development could lead to more prosperity in the future. Even continuation of our fast culture, if that's what people prefer.
Hydrogen fuel, solar energy, electric cars, green air travel; even space travel. Technology could still step forward.
A carbon tax would, most likely, create some short term drag on our economy. It's a tax. It would create some disruption. It wouldn't necessarily be as bad as this virus which has hit us; like it our not. A carbon tax could be suited more to our intent.
One of the big drawbacks of a carbon tax is the effect on lower income people; especially low income folks who have to commute a long ways to work and / or are dependent on energy intensive industries. Tourism, for instance.
Carbon taxes can be fairly regressive. That is part of the reason why they are difficult, politically.
There would be some bad side effects to a carbon tax. Nothing is perfect, but during the virus, we have done quite a bit to try and mitigate the effects of the downturn on lower income people. We have done things to protect the more vulnerable; generous unemployment benefits, payroll protection plans, various stimulus checks. We've been printing free money; so to speak.
Locally, here in Bellingham, we've even turned over one of our nice school buildings; Bellingham High School, to the homeless. This, due to the need to provide more spacing between people than the crowded mission house can provide. Said to reduce spread of the virus in our community.
After summer, the homeless shelter moves down the street to one of our empty retail spaces (pictured above).
The measures we would have to do to mitigate the downside effects of a carbon tax would, most likely, not have to be as drastic as for the virus.
The virus has been a bad thing and has killed lots of people, but it may offer us some lessons that are useful in reducing carbon emissions. The economic downturn has reduced pollution, but even this hasn't been enough to meet the need.
If and when we find cures and a vaccine for the virus, it isn't likely to go back to "business as usual." We still face the challenge of climate change. Solutions, like carbon taxes, might be similar to the virus in some ways, but hopefully they can be more tame and controllable.

How I store and catalog my photo collection. My answer when a photographer ask this question on Facebook.
I've put my favorite photos on Flickr, a photo sharing service. The photos were all taken with mostly point and shoot inexpensive cameras. I've donated them to Creative Commons. Occasionally one finds its way into a publication, class project, presentation or whatever. If others can use my photos, I find it gratifying. Usually it's for small scale non profit type projects, like, say, a budget request document for a bike lane on some bridge. On rare occasions, I've received money which I consider like a donation.
My photos are arranged in albums and cross referenced by tags. I often put long descriptions with the photo to share my experiences and opinions related to the photo. This is a writing outlet, for me which I find can be therapeutic. My photos do bring quite a bit of page views. The text is searchable which makes it easy to find photos related to various things. Even if the tags don't specifically fit the search, something in the text usually does.
The bulk of my photos, that I don't think are worth sharing (duplicates and so forth), remain in digital file folders labeled by the year taken. Paper snapshots, that I took before the years of digital photography, are in my closet. My favorite ones have been scanned into the computer with some of them being uploaded to Flickr. The snapshots remain in a few boxes, or plastic sleeve pages of old photo albums.
Years ago, someone suggested I put my travel photos into albums so they would be easier to share when I visit with friends. That was a good idea, back then, but today, my sharing is on-line. Some of the old album pages are starting to deteriorate.
In the next few months, or years, I am planning to remove these many photos from the somewhat dilapidated pages and put them back in boxes. I will toss some duplicates and maybe scan a few more photos into my computer. Share a few more on Flickr after deciding I like them better than I thought before. The rest will just sit in a box or two and take up much less room than the old photo albums did.

Essay:
Earth's Transformation and the Random Implementation of Alien Technology
The Earth, once a vibrant planet teeming with diverse ecosystems, has undergone a drastic transformation. A severe environmental catastrophe has devastated the planet, leading to the evaporation of life-giving water into the vast expanse of space. The once-blue planet is now dominated by barren deserts, stretching across continents where oceans and forests once thrived. Humanity, on the brink of extinction, has been thrust into a desperate struggle for survival.
The catalyst for this environmental apocalypse was a combination of factors: uncontrolled industrial activity, rampant deforestation, and unchecked pollution. These human activities pushed Earth's climate system past a critical threshold, triggering a cascade of irreversible changes. The polar ice caps melted at unprecedented rates, causing sea levels to rise and then rapidly fall as water vapor escaped the atmosphere. Rainforests, which acted as the planet's lungs, were decimated, and the delicate balance of ecosystems collapsed. The result was a planet unrecognizable from its former self—a desolate wasteland where life struggled to find a foothold.
In this dire scenario, hope arrived in the form of alien technology—an unexpected boon that became humanity's lifeline. The origins of this technology remain shrouded in mystery. Some speculate it was discovered accidentally during deep-space explorations, while others believe it was gifted by a benevolent extraterrestrial civilization. Regardless of its origins, this advanced technology became the cornerstone of Earth's new survival strategy.
The alien technology enabled the creation of isolated oases in the vast desert expanses. These oases, shielded by energy fields and sustained by advanced atmospheric processors, mimic the lost ecosystems of old Earth. They generate and recycle water, maintain breathable air, and support agriculture, allowing small human communities to thrive. The technology also includes sophisticated climate control mechanisms that protect these fertile areas from the harsh desert environment.
The implementation of alien technology was a stroke of luck, a fortuitous discovery in humanity's darkest hour. Scientists and engineers, initially skeptical, soon realized the potential of these alien devices. Through trial and error, they managed to integrate this technology into the remnants of human civilization. This integration was not without its challenges—there were numerous failures and setbacks, but the resilience of the human spirit prevailed.
Life in these technologically sustained oases is a stark contrast to the desolation that surrounds them. Within the protective domes, greenery flourishes, and small bodies of water reflect the sky. Communities have adapted to this new way of living, embracing a lifestyle that is a blend of ancient survival techniques and futuristic technology. Education systems focus on maintaining and understanding the alien technology, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from it.
The concept of 'Planet B' has taken on a new meaning. Instead of seeking a new home among the stars, humanity has been forced to redefine its existence on Earth—'Planet B' is Earth reborn, a new chapter after 'Planet A' vanished beneath the waves of environmental disaster. The Earth of today is a testament to human ingenuity and the unforeseen assistance of alien technology. It is a world where the line between science fiction and reality has blurred, and where survival hinges on the harmonious integration of alien and human advancements.
In conclusion, the transformation of Earth and the serendipitous implementation of alien technology have given rise to a new way of life. This new existence is fragile and fraught with challenges, but it is also a beacon of hope. The 'Cradle of the Desert' represents the resilience of life and the enduring quest for survival in the face of insurmountable odds.
Poem:
In deserts wide where oceans slept,
Beneath a sky where sorrow wept,
Alien whispers, silent, deep,
Brought life anew from restless sleep.
Once blue and green, now dust and bone,
Our planet’s heart, a hollow tone,
Yet through the sands, technology,
Revived the hope for you and me.
In domes of light, we plant our dreams,
Where water flows in gentle streams,
Alien hands unseen, yet kind,
Breathe life back to a world confined.
From barren waste to fertile land,
A future forged by chance and hand,
Cradle of the Desert, bright,
Guides us through this endless night.
Haikus:
Alien whispers,
Oases bloom in deserts,
Hope in arid lands.
Earth’s rebirth at hand,
Technology’s gentle touch,
Life in barren sands.
so i wnet home to see the folks a few weeks back and stumbled across some old college stuff including this essay entitled 'Punk as a subculture and its place in art'. it wasnt very good but i njoyed the research.
In an effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions, the city of Bellingham is considering banning the use of natural gas for heating homes and businesses.
This is just a proposal being considered, but it's already put our town on the map. A feature article has come out in the January 5th edition of The New York Times about this proposal in Bellingham. We might be getting famous.
Natural gas is a fossil fuel and this proposal would, most likely, favor electricity over gas; for instance electric heating. I sense people cringing now as electric heating is often more expensive than gas.
I personally think this proposal is not the best idea. It seems like a somewhat desperate case of grasping at straws. It's trying to do something to address global warming when more comprehensive solutions, like carbon taxes, are needed.
Here in Washington State, people are worried about climate change, but it's still hard to get voters to pass a carbon tax. Two such proposals have recently failed at the ballot box.
Banning natural gas in favor of electricity seems like somewhat of a gimmick, to me, but it is an attempt to do something. Ironically, much of our electricity comes from natural gas. There are quite a few natural gas fired power plants including one on lower Cornwall Avenue, in Bellingham. Just switching over to electricity could still mean we are using gas if the electricity comes from gas.
Another big problem, leading to our carbon footprint, is the automobile. As with most places, people in Bellingham continue their dependence on automobiles. Most cars still run on fossil fuels. Traffic keeps increasing in Bellingham.
The big problems leading to our growing carbon footprint are increasing population and consumption. As for our growing population, I often say, "if more people were gay, world population growth would be less of a problem."
The proposal to curb use of natural gas does have some things in its favor. It might not go into effect until 2040. Given the lifespans of furnaces, these days, most folks will have likely had to replace their furnace by then anyway.
One advantage that electricity has over gas is that electricity can come from many sources. Gas has to be gas. Electricity can come from solar, wind or other green energy sources. This could further encourage the use of green energy.
This proposal advocates the use of heat pump technology. Heat pumps usually run on electricity, but they can be less expensive to operate than baseboard electric heating. Heat pumps tend to be more expensive to install, however.
Heat pumps work like a refrigerator in reverse. They move heat around. They have coils that refrigerate the ground and other areas around a building and then pump that heat inside. They work pretty good in mild climates, but on really cold days, heat pumps don't work that well. It gets much harder to pump the heat "up hill;" so to speak. Heat pump systems often use regular electric heating for backup.
Ideally, it would be great if all of our energy came from green sources. Here in the Pacific Northwest, we do have fairly green electricity because much of our power comes from dams on our rivers. Dams don't have to burn fossil fuel, but they do cause problems for salmon and other fish.
There are proposals to breach many dams on our rivers to improve the salmon habitat. This could help to save the whales that eat salmon.
Another problem with the dams is that we have pretty much tapped most of our rivers. Continued growth in energy use has to come from other sources. Some of that growth means we have expanded into using more natural gas to generate the extra power.
Wind and solar power are more ideal, but they can be expensive; at least in the short run.
Ironically, there is still a moratorium on wind turbines in most of Whatcom County. There is worry about the effects of wind farms on birds and bats. Some homeowners think wind turbines are unsightly and might cause a drop in their property values.
There are plenty of wind farms that dot the landscape in eastern Washington and they are starting to produce more of our power.
Here on the west side of the Cascades, we may seem quite narcissistic if we are worried about things like property values. Reducing carbon emissions will take some major changes in our thinking. A ban on natural gas may be just a band-aid.

Not only are small farms beginning to thrive again, but some farms have found new ways of perpetuating New England’s agricultural tradition. Every state in New England now has at least one—and often more—farming museum or working farm that is open to the public. Generations who grew up in an urban culture get a small taste of farming first-hand. Such farms offer multidimensional experiences that combine factual information with sensory memories.
My own town, for instance, preserved one lovely farm, which is now municipal land. It features a house, a barn, rolling meadows, and a strong whiff of the past. The town has formed a committee to explore how best to utilize this asset. In the meantime, families have sledding parties there in winter and stroll on the land in spring. Younger generations are given a glimpse of a slower, quieter life that connects with the natural world.
Another local farm has taken this idea a step further. It offers what I call “Farm Camp,” afterschool and summer programs where children learn about farming through direct participation. These kids don’t learn only through lectures and exhibits; they get in and mess around. They pet, they feed, they groom, they make decisions. Kid-size tools allow them to muck out stalls, haul water, and do numerous other traditional farm chores.
The kids are learning the pleasures and perils of animals, the care that they require, and the real daily-ness of farming. Not only are the campers having a great time—their enthusiasm is visible—but they are absorbing the sights, sounds, and scents of rural life. These agricultural details are becoming part of who they are. In twenty years, they may not consciously remember washing a pig. They may not even know why each spring they feel compelled to buy manure for their gardens instead of powdered fertilizer. But I have no doubt that many will have gardens—and perhaps even a chicken or two.

This was my photo essay project for Photography II at a local community college. The assigned subject was Veggies in Close by Window Light.
I shot all pictures with Exposure Bracketing with continuous shooting mode turned on (it would shoot 3 pictures then stop), so that I could pick the best exposure for the particular subject.
The rings on an onion are really cool. I also like the lighting. The one side that is lit up is facing the window, and the shadowed one is obviously in the shadows...
Between my two modules on my MA I feel like my brain is weekly saturated by my reams of reading.
This essay followed the reading of a great Brazilian novel "Memorias de um sargento de Melicias" (Memoirs of a Militia Sergeant). I really enjoyed the book but this essay almost sent me over the edge. Big academic words in English are bad enough ... even worse when they are in Portuguese!
This is the photo used to inscript the writing on my forehead in my last self-portrait.
