I like the Esquire, even though I wouldn't stay there if you held a gun to my head. (Which is a possibility in that area) It still looks so 60's, and the sign is neat. It's a shame that the area has gone to crap, and the motels along this stretch cater to a more... um, seedy crowd. Why the Inkster police can't clean this area up is a mystery to me. Not wanting to get bitched at by the desk clerk (as reported by many people), I parked across the street and ran across the 8 lanes of Mich Ave to get this shot, while keeping one eye on my truck.
The Esquire Theatre was an Art Deco style house that was built in 1947 seating 1,106. A two and a half story front facade with shadow boxes down the front till it met the marquee. The marquee stretched the entire front of the building from side to side.

I talked to a guy who told me that while in elementary school, he would help clean the theater and then could watch the movie from the balcony. He and his friends had a similar gig at the Dairy Queen down the street, where they would clean the parking lot in return for free ice cream and Dilly Bars.

The Esquite Theatre opened in 1911, showing silent films and featuring live events on stage. The theatre closed in 1983 and in 1984 Wendy's proposed a fast-food restaurant for the location. The Clifton residents banded together to save the theatre and a court battle ensued. The residents won and in 1990 the building was remodeled and reopened with three screens.
The theatre now has six screens. It is a rare independent theatre that shows first-run feature films.

Meet Joe Brown. At 96 years old, Joe is the oldest active licensed barber in the state of Florida. He has been working at the Esquire Barbershop for 23 years now. The Esquire Barbershop is located in Downtown Pensacola on Garden Street and has been there since 1963. A friend of mine and colleague of Joe's recommended I stop by the shop and meet Joe, so I did just that. Mr. Brown was kind enough to let me take his portrait but I had to wait until he finished a couple haircuts. I didn't mind waiting as I was astonished at all of the history that was going on in that barbershop. When it was my turn with Joe a client walked in so I only got a couple shots. First one was overexposed so I made my adjustments and this was the second one. I am going to make some prints and drop them off for him.

I found myself in the peculiar postion of having to build a Lego Leica very shortly after Mr. Attaki had published pictures of his own stunning Leica M8. In order to prevent any sort of duplication of his build, I purposely avoided referencing his photos during the development of my M9.
Happily, my build would go in a slightly different direction. The M9 I patterned my build on has soft brown body and a different lens, which gives it a distinctly different look.
I'm rather proud of this build, especially given the short development time. The only regret I have is that there aren't any curved slopes in nougat/medium dark flesh, as it's a much better match for the actual color of the M9.
I'll upload a few addition photos of it over the next day or so.
“That is a lovely book Bertie, have you looked all the way through it?” Asked Posh Bear.
“Yes, I often take a look and you’re right Posh, it is a lovely book.”
“What is it about Bertie? Is it about us?” Asked Sky.
“Kind of Sky, it is about me and my family. There are lots of pictures in there of my family members, it came with me when I arrived here many sleeps ago.”
“That is nice Bertie, does everyone have a book like that?”
“No Sky, only members of the Merrythought family. You see that is my name, Bertie Merrythought Esquire.”
“Wowsers Bertie, that sounds soooo Posh… whoops sorry Posh. I should say classy.”
“I’ll show you the pictures later Sky if you want to see them.”
“That would be nice, wouldn’t it Posh? Do you have a family book like Bertie Merrythought Esquire?”
“No Sky, sadly I don’t. In some ways I would like to know about my family but then I think of what I have here with my friends, and well, it becomes less important because you are all my family.”
“Do I have a book like that Posh?”
“No Sky, but you do have a lot of very good friends. We are lucky when you think about it because we have each other and even the man comes in handy when we need something.”
“I suppose so, I still think it would be exciting to have a special book like that one though. I wonder if the man has a book like that?”
“Not quite the same Sky, he has what are called photographs of his family, but it isn’t all set out so nicely as in a book like that.”
“I have loads of phonographs of me.” Said Sky.
“Not phonographs Sky, it is photographs, and yes there are a lot of you on the man’s picture machine.” Corrected Bertie.
“Well, those pictures thingies don’t make me look anyway near as cute as I really am. I dare say that is the man’s fault though, he tries hard and practices a lot.” Said Sky sighing.
“They don’t do much for my distinguished features either, but he does try.” Added Posh.
“It is hard to ruin the elegant, friendly profile of a Merrythought bear but I admit he has come close.” Said Bertie.
“Look out fellas, here he comes again. Best poses to get this over with and just hope he gets it right first time.”
“Miracles, do you believe in miracles…?” hummed Posh.

From Cinema Treasures: The beautiful Streamline Moderne Esquire's historic exterior is in stark contrast to its carved up interior.
Originally the 1938 movie house had a single auditorium with over 1,400 seats, but the Esquire underwent a conversion to a six-plex in the late 80's.
Most recently operated by the AMC Entertainment chain after many years under the Loews Cineplex chain, the Esquire was closed in September 2006.
The building is set to be demolished sometime in 2009, and an upcale retail center is supposed to take its place (until recently plans also included a boutique hotel tower, but that portion of the project has been dropped by the developer).

At night this sign really comes alive. I've heard of others being hassled when photographing this sign, but either they didn't see me, or they didn't care. It's a beaut of a sign though. The motel itself looked questionable, but it might have been OK. The kinda place I'd insist on seeing the room first before handing over my credit card.
Then I'd want a room where I can watch the sign all night. :-)

The historic Esquire Theatre was opened in 1940. This 790 seat community theatre was saved from the wrecking ball in 1989.
The Esquire was later renovated and renamed 'The Ross Ragland Theatre', after one of the men who saved the building.
A few months ago, I met up with a colleague for lunch, and she suggested a restaurant near here. I arrived too early, so I got off the bus a few stops early to walk the rest of the way.
Aha, I came across my namesake (sort of) street and strip mall by accident!

There's always some compromise when you recreate an object in Lego, and this build is a fine example of that tenet. On it's own, it's a perfectly serviceable representation of a golf club, but it's very difficult to represent the subtle contours and concave slopes of modern clubs with Lego. I considered building this one 4X larger, but sadly, I just didn't have time.
