Bodum's coffee lineup this year has many highlights, but when one arrives at their press pot selection... we see some rather curious changes.
The two main changes for 06 was the introduction of the Young Press... this unit is a regular glass beaker with the three piece metal mesh filter, however, it's now encased in a polypropolene sleeve. This serves two functions: protection from hard knocks and more importantly, insulation during brewing. This change is long overdue. The other change is the introduction of polycarbonate beaker...unbreakable, yes, but also, uses a rubber gasket seal against the beaker's sidewalls... ultimately this should lead to less fines in the final coffee - a common complaint of detractors of the press.
And as of recently, Bodum has introduced a doublewall Chambord FP. If you've broken a Chambord beaker before, I could only imagine what this will lead to for others...

I've been experimenting with different processes in vac pot coffee to isolate the source of overextraction (resulting in woodsy notes in particular), and I've come up with some interesting observations. Experiment results will be on espressolab.ca soon.
