There was not much by way of science rationale for acquiring this footprint (outside of wanting to have coverage at HiRISE resolution of this massive, 150 km × 125 km (93 mi × 78 mi) diameter crater), but possible clays may have been detected on the southeast rim. And the view is spectacular!

Merdiani Planum is the region that the rover Opportunity has been exploring. You can see from the numerous sand pilings what a challenge it would be to navigate a rover across! (Less than 1 km top to bottom and north is to the right.)
