A rare photo opportunity presented itself, and I took the bait. Canadian Pacific and Norfolk Southern (Erie Heritage) locomotives pull Union Pacific's Murdock, Utah - Shafter, Nevada ballast train, eastbound on the Salt Lake Route near Erda, Utah. 4.12.2023

Union Pacific's hot NPLAT pulls through Tooele Valley between Erda and Warner, Utah the afternoon of Jan. 30, 1993. The power lash-up includes UP SD60 No. 6062, SOO SD60 No. 6021, UP C40-8 No. 9139 and UP DDA40X No. 6936. The train consist includes six loads of HOGX "Farmer John" hog cars, a five-pack of well cars with K-Line containers, five auto rack loads, and a gaggle trailers on spine cars.

Here’s another NPLAGE train, this time pulling 83 cars near Erda, Utah the morning of Aug. 6, 1995. In the background are Stansbury Island, the Great Salt Lake, the former Western Pacific main line, Interstate 80, and Stansbury Park. A small herd of cattle pay no mind to the loud freight train climbing the grade away from the Great Salt Lake basin on a perfect late spring evening. UP 7355 nears the crossing at Droubay Ln. south of Erda, UT with, presumably, a MOGWC.

Union Pacific's priority Chicago to Los Angeles intermodal was the hottest train on the 'Salt Lake Route' when photographed between Erda and Warner (Tooele), Utah the morning of Oct. 13, 1996. If you look closely, an American President Lines stack train can be discerned in the background of the image, just above the cab of UP 3351. The Lynndyl Sub dispatcher tucked him away in the siding at Erda, in order to run the CHLAX around him while climbing the 0.8% grade to Stockton.

Union Pacific 7510, a 6000 horsepower AC6000CW locomotive, leads an eastbound container train through Tooele Valley near Erda, Utah the morning of April 18, 1999. The concept of a 6000 HP locomotive appealed to railroad companies at the time, but in practice it didn't work well. By May 2008, UP 7510 lost its original prime mover, replaced by a standard AC4400CW engine. At the same time, it was renumbered UP 6898 to make it fit within the C44AC fleet. 6898 is still active, currently working a westbound train through Idaho, on the road to Hinkle, Oregon.

Doug was fortunate on this afternoon as he caught three westbound trains on UP's Lynndyl Sub, all of them powered by DD35s.
