I thought it would be nice to start the week with a butterfly. This beautiful specimen was enjoying milkweed at "The Leaf's" butterfly exhibit.

At the butterfly exhibit at "The Leaf" there were a few different species than my first visit there. This pretty specimen is one of them. It goes by several other names, a few of which include: Red passion flower butterfly, Crimson-patched Longwing and Small Postman.

Heliconius erato, or the red postman, is one of about 40 neotropical species of butterfly belonging to the genus Heliconius. It is also commonly known as the small postman, the red passion flower butterfly, or the crimson-patched longwing.
Heliconius melpomene, the postman butterfly, common postman or simply postman, is a brightly colored butterfly found throughout Central and South America. It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. Its coloration coevolved with a sister species H. erato as a warning to predators of its inedibility; this is an example of Müllerian mimicry. H. melpomene was one of the first butterfly species observed to forage for pollen, a behavior that is common in other groups but rare in butterflies

The Small Postman (Longwing),is common and widespread throughout Central and South America. Adults feed on nectar from Lantana spp. and many other flowers, and collect pollen from Psiguria spp. Adults learn and memorize the location of Psiguria plants (also known as Amazon cucumber). They then return to them daily, following a pre-defined route through the forest. This is referred to as ‘trap-line’ feeding – it’s also how they earned their name of “Postman!” From the Butterfly Conservatory

A Red Postman (Heliconius Erato) also known as the red passion flower butterfly. I like this shot as you can see the tube-like proboscis, which it uncoils to sip liquid food and then coils up again into a spiral when not feeding. This image isn't really a macro as it was taken with a long telephoto lens using back button focus to servo drive inside the lens minimum focus depth.

Good place for cosmopolitans, the Butterfly House of our Hortus. Here's a plant from Southeast Asia. It's a Midin, Stenochlaena palustris. A long-climbing fern vine whose fronds can be used for a delicious salad. Just looking at it made my mouth water in memory of the many times I've eaten it in Borneo. Now out of bounds for me because of Covid-19...
Here it is in cosmopolitan fashion being visited by a South American Butterfly, a Postman. There are many kinds of Heliconius Butterflies; this is an 'erato', possibly subspecies 'himera'. But no doubt someone from wide-ranging Flickr will correct me if I'm wrong.
