This is a shot of the stone bridge at the gorge ‘Portitsa (Kanavi valley) near the city of Grevena. The double-arched bridge was constructed in 1743; it is a 112–ft / 34–m long, 9–ft / 2.7–m wide and 26–ft / 7.8–m high.
The river Venetikos runs through the gorge. Thanks to its bluey water, this river may have been named after the word “vénetos” (adjective for the azure / cerulean blue in ancient and medieval Greek; as a noun in plural “vénetoe” meant the blue-uniform-wearing charioteers of the Byzantine Empire). Venetikos is a tributary of Aliakmon, the longest river (185 miles / 297 km) in Greece.
