- Sorbus aucuparia, commonly called rowan and mountain-ash, is a species of deciduous tree or shrub in the rose family.

S. aucuparia has a slender trunk with smooth bark, a loose and roundish crown, and its leaves are pinnate in pairs of leaflets on a central vein with a terminal leaflet.

It blossoms from May to June in dense corymbs of small yellowish white flowers and develops small red pomes as fruit that ripen from August to October and are eaten by many bird species.

Het Loo Palace (Dutch: Paleis Het Loo, IPA: [pɑlˈɛi̯s ˌɦɛt ˈloʊ̯], meaning "The Woods Palace") is a palace in Apeldoorn, Netherlands. The symmetrical Dutch Baroque building was designed by Jacob Roman and Johan van Swieten and was built between 1684 and 1686 for stadtholder-king William III and Mary II of England. The garden was designed by Claude Desgotz.

The palace was a residence of the House of Orange-Nassau from the 17th century until the death of Queen Wilhelmina in 1962. The building was renovated between 1976 and 1982. Since 1984, the palace is a state museum open for the general public, showing interiors with original furniture, objects and paintings of the House of Orange-Nassau.

The building is a rijksmonument and is among the Top 100 Dutch heritage sites.

A dry-country kingfisher of scrub and woodland, solitary or in pairs, often found near water, but unlike most kingfishers is not aquatic. Perches on a branch, unmoving for long periods while watching the ground for signs of insects or small lizards, bobbing head before diving on prey

Two souls but a single thought, two hearts that beat as one.

At first light, a dark brown dragonfly nymph, about 5cm/2 inches long crawled out of the water, up a stem and gradually shed its skin so this adult dragonfly could emerge and then walk further up the stem to hide beneath the leaves. The process takes a couple of hours. For several hours since, it has been expanding to its full size, inflating its wings and drying out. Until it takes its first flight, it is referred to as 'teneral'.

The right hand wing tips either haven't fully inflated yet or are mal-formed, but don't worry, this dragonfly will be able to fly, feed and mate perfectly well. It may also be missing its rear right leg, but it just might not be visible in the picture.

At this stage of its life, it is extremely vulnerable to becoming prey for birds and was hanging well hidden in the foliage. The characteristic blue colour in the tail and eyes (see previous picture) will develop over the next few days. Right now, it is predominantly green and well camouflaged. A curious Red-eyed Damselfly manages to photo-bomb the scene.

The Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator) is the largest dragonfly native to the UK and is about 10cm/4inches in both length and wingspan.
