Bicycles
Although I don’t ride a bike, well not at least for 40 odd years, there is something satisfying about a bike. It’s solid, reliable (mainly), an art form, it has a place in our society, an environmental champion, a pleasure and a serious competitor.
There aren’t many things in life that fulfil those criteria, there will always be those detractors but for me the bike is a hero.

A male Cinnamon teal from the West coast of the United States is a rare sight at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Titusville, Florida
Anhinga's are one of my favorite birds. Normally I like raptors, but Anhinga's crack me up. When the male comes home to the nest, if it doesn't have nesting material in his beak, he's talking during the landing and is usually met with a enthusiastic vocal greeting. They often land comically. They sometimes toss fish they've speared in the air before gulping it down. Called a "snake bird" because of their snakelike neck, or "turkey bird" because of their turkey like tail, they provide a wonderfully active subject to observe and photograph. Here's one caught coming home with nesting material. I call it "Anhinga Environmental" because I chose a wide rather than a close crop.

During a recent brief visit to Hong Kong we walked past the Hong Kong Museum of Art. An interesting building, currently under renovation, but I was attracted by its exterior and the strong contrast with the early morning sun peeping through. An unexpected moment.
The environmental concept of equilibrium is something metastable, not permanent. Curves are shapes of this dynamic balance in nature, where nothing is eternal.
Oh' how we all wish a few single stitches could solve the 🌎 worlds environmental problems. Ah .... but alas, unfortunately, it's much more complex.
Much more than a couple of stitches can fix .... 💦

The Urban Fox
Wild foxes have learned to adapt to the urban environment in order to survive. By nature, foxes are nocturnal and hunt at night, whereas the urban fox has adapted its behavior to survive and can be seen during daylight hours.
Locally, a fox vixen has located her den in the foundational remains of a razed building complex along the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore. She has six Kits, which can be seen frolicking in the debris and along the dunes during the day. The fox family has become local celebrities and unfortunately people have begun feeding them. Never feed wild animals. Although you may feel as if you’re helping them survive, you are actually harming them. Feeding foxes can alter their natural behavior and they may lose its fear of humans.

This is especially true in juvenile animals that have not yet developed their own foraging skills and have little ability to fend for themselves once handouts cease.” ~ Julie King, Senior Wildlife Biologist

Red Fox
The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

Indonesia is currently facing one of massive drilling induced environmental disaster in the form of uncontrolled huge mudflow and the consequent environmental damage which started on May 29, 2006 during drilling of an exploratory well Banjar Panji-1 in Siring village in Porong district in Sidoarjo regency, East Java, Indonesia, and is still continuing until this time.
For two years and five months the seepages in the earth has been oozing hot mud enough to fill 50 Olympic-size swimming pools every day. The mud also has accompanying methane and hydrogen sulphide, though in small quantities giving foul odor. The oozing mud has inundated huge area of land in and around and has made 12,000 families homeless by submerging 4 villages, 30 factories, 33 schools and hundreds of hectares of farmland and ponds. Now nobody knows when this mud flow will stop, it is estimated that this flow may last for another 30 years in the form of mud volcano. This mud flow has already resulted in subsidence of land due to subsurface voidage creation resulting in damage to nearby trunk gas pipe line and railway line and toll road. An expenditure of US$ 1.1 billion is estimated to meet compensation to the affected people and to rectify the infrastructural damage.
Finally the mud is being channeled to the Porong River to the sea, the environmental damage potential of which has not even been studied.

MASSIVE MUDFLOW AND ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE FOLLOWING DRILLING FAILURE – AN EXAMPLE FROM INDONESIA
I came up with the idea for this shot as I was preparing for the office this morning. I didn't have the time to execute it until the day was done. I am a bit disheveled after the day but I am happy with the final product nonetheless. It was a truly challenging image to take because one has to anticipate how the camera would see a reflection.
I can't understand why I cannot stop using the 16-35mm for portraits. I love the huge amount of environment it brings in for portraits and I don't mind the little distortion. I've cropped this photo in a tad ,just keeping the wonderful forest and stream we had discovered. I love the image of her sitting dreaming on the rock, and don't think any other lens could have captured it better. So here's to wide angled portraits

Now things are starting to make sense. Here we are at the edge of the marsh, in the middle of the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center, looking back at the start of the boardwalk, the waste treatment plant, and the town of Port Aransas. Pretty popular place on Sunday morning in clear weather. For good reason, as we'll see presently.
Sorry if "Environmental-Industrial Complex" sounds sinister, by association with Eisenhower's famous warning. In this case industry serves the environment, which is a good thing--maybe even the best we can manage at this stage of the Anthropocene.

Hats off to the Ontario Government for allowing these! Some municipalities here in the Province of Ontario actually banned the use of clotheslines by instituting by-laws. The former City of Kanata was one such municipality that would not allow them.
Even if you don't agree with the Liberal Government, you have to agree that this was a good move!

McGuinty Government Lifts Ban On Outdoor Clotheslines
NEWS
This summer, Ontarians will have the choice to dry their laundry on an outdoor clothesline.
Premier Dalton McGuinty said the province is putting an end to some restrictions that prevent people from using outdoor clotheslines. This includes agreements between home builders and buyers in some towns and cities in Ontario.
Using outdoor clotheslines instead of electric dryers can:
Save consumers $30 per year when they reduce their dryer use by 25 per cent.
Cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Reduce demand on the power grid — home dryers use about 900 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
QUOTES
"There's a whole generation of kids growing up today who think a clothesline is a wrestling move. We want parents to have the choice to use the wind and the sun to dry their clothes for free," said Premier McGuinty.
"We want every Ontario family to have the tools they need to save energy and save money. Just using a clothesline instead of a dryer can make a significant difference to your pocketbook, reduce demand on the electricity grid, and help keep our air clean," said Energy Minister Gerry Phillips.

Florida, Utah and Hawaii have laws in place that ensure people can use clotheslines. Similar legislation is being considered in Vermont.
Electric clothes dryers use about six per cent of electricity in the home — as much as a refrigerator running 24-7.
Over the course of a year, five clothes dryers could result in roughly the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as an average-size car.
The Environmental Defense Fund has published these reminders. They are a great organization and I hope they don't mind me spreading the word.

South Africa
The Northern Cape is the largest and most sparsely populated province of South Africa. It was created in 1994 when the Cape Province was split up. Its capital is Kimberley. It includes the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, an international park shared with Botswana. It also includes the Augrabies Falls and the diamond mining regions in Kimberley and Alexander Bay. The Namaqualand region in the west is famous for its Namaqualand daisies.
This photo was taken on my way to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
Someone pointed out to me once that the tradition of hanging the clothes outside to dry is environmentally correct as opposed to spending electricity in drying machines! And I add... It is aesthetically relevant too!

Taken for Macro Monday theme 'Plastic'.
I tried various ways of taking the photo: different apertures and different angles. On-camera flash was used to add a bit of light to the tubes. Decided on this one.
Plastic straws are probably next on the environmental hit list. There's currently talk of banning them in the UK. We've a packet in the cupboard that we've had for years as it's rare that we use them. Now seems like good time to photograph them before they are no more.
can't get enough shots of the stuff people keep in their back-yard .... not always the nicest but a lot of times interesting. ;)
