This heap of commercial litter was probably dragged here by some well meaning individuals prior to the rise of the winter water table in the dune system. Now with a higher water table we have an island of plastic and general man made waste, in an SSSI at Ratray head, Aberdeenshire. Scotland.

Cutting trees to make space for new buildings. Some people call it urbanization, others call it environmental destruction.
Indonesia is currently facing one of massive drilling induced environmental disaster in the form of uncontrolled huge mudflow and the consequent environmental damage which started on May 29, 2006 during drilling of an exploratory well Banjar Panji-1 in Siring village in Porong district in Sidoarjo regency, East Java, Indonesia, and is still continuing until this time.
For two years and five months the seepages in the earth has been oozing hot mud enough to fill 50 Olympic-size swimming pools every day. The mud also has accompanying methane and hydrogen sulphide, though in small quantities giving foul odor. The oozing mud has inundated huge area of land in and around and has made 12,000 families homeless by submerging 4 villages, 30 factories, 33 schools and hundreds of hectares of farmland and ponds. Now nobody knows when this mud flow will stop, it is estimated that this flow may last for another 30 years in the form of mud volcano. This mud flow has already resulted in subsidence of land due to subsurface voidage creation resulting in damage to nearby trunk gas pipe line and railway line and toll road. An expenditure of US$ 1.1 billion is estimated to meet compensation to the affected people and to rectify the infrastructural damage.
Finally the mud is being channeled to the Porong River to the sea, the environmental damage potential of which has not even been studied.

Side-striped Palm Viper
Bothriechis lateralis is a venomous pit viper species found in the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama. Common names: Side-striped Palm Pit Viper and Side-striped Palm Viper. Adult specimens may exceed 39 inches but are usually less than 31 inches in length. These are relatively slender snakes and have a prehensile tail.
The color pattern consists of an emerald green to bluish green ground color, overlaid with a series of yellow alternating paravertebral vertical bars. Some of the scales adjacent to the yellow in this pattern may be blue or black-tipped. The belly is a uniform yellowing-green, bordered on either side by a pale-yellow stripe running along the lower portion of the paraventral scales and the extreme lateral part of the ventral scales. The head is uniformly green on top and a blue or blue gray postocular stripe may be present. If a postocular stripe is present, it is weakly defined, especially in large adults. The iris is yellow.

Red Fox
The Red Fox, Vulpes vulpes, is the largest of the true foxes and the most abundant wild member of the Carnivora, being present across the entire Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa, North America and Eurasia. It is listed as least concern by the IUCN. Its range has increased alongside human expansion, having been introduced to Australia, where it is considered harmful to native mammals and bird populations. Due to its presence in Australia, it is included among the list of the "world's 100 worst invasive species".

The Library is sponsoring book displays based on topics given to us by student clubs and organizations. The second book display is sponsored by Students for Environmental Action, which "works to inform and educate the Emmanuel Community about the importance of the environment and the current issues that it is facing; as well as working collaboratively to take action against these issues." The books in the image above are a sampling of titles that the Library has purchased within the past couple of years that are related to the interests of the Students for Environmental Action.
Please stop by the browsing section of the Library, which is located on the second floor, to see the full book display.
If you need assistance finding these books or other resources, please see a librarian.
The Environmental Defense Fund has published these reminders. They are a great organization and I hope they don't mind me spreading the word.
Someone pointed out to me once that the tradition of hanging the clothes outside to dry is environmentally correct as opposed to spending electricity in drying machines! And I add... It is aesthetically relevant too!
