Making a change from the spring flowers...a definite lack of landscape photo ops over the last 6 months, sadly, so here's one from last autumn...

Probably flower or bird tomorrow...

Whenever I go away, it's seeing these beautiful oak trees that signals to me I'm home. Wishing everyone a great day. I'll be away, as today is my birthday. I'll catch up with everyone later.

buona notte a tutti

It was a bright sunny day today, so we decided to go up Grouse Mountain, as we have an annual pass. We went up the gondola, and it was still sunny, but we could see patches of fog. So the next step was taking a chair lift to the top of the mountain. The fog kept getting thicker....I took this shot from the chair lift. When we got to the top, there is a wind turbine. (I know, go figure, a wind turbine at the top of a mountain?). We decided to go to the top of it even though we knew we would be able to see absolutely nothing, which was the case. By the time we got down the elevator, there was a torrential downpour, which we were not prepared for. We waited under cover for about 15 minutes, but the torrent of rain wouldn't stop. One of the workers there gave me a large garbage bag to wear, tearing a hole in it for my head. I was now seriously dressed to impress :) The trail down had turned into a river, so my feet were soaked through as well. And of course, the rain came through my camera backpack and soaked everything in there, including my camera. I was lucky it was okay. And in the end, it was all just an adventure...

If you zoom in, you might be able to see a wee bit more :)

Taken last night for the Smile on Saturday theme "Flora in Monotone". This resilient little flower still blooms on my balcony, even though it's almost December and it's also getting colder now, with night temperatures approaching 0 °C, and day temperatures not much higher. About two weeks ago, when I actually wanted to photograph a colourful sunset from my balcony, I noticed that the illuminated windows in the house across the street would make a very interesting-looking bokeh background for the yellow flower. Since then I've taken numerous images of this humble little beauty (and her sister), handheld and at higher ISO first (and all of them blurry), then with a tripod crammed in between the balcony table (well, yes, I could move it away) and the balcony parapet, still a fairly shaky affair (and last night it had also been windy); I'd taken the first images with the Lumix LX100, then the next ones with my Oly (with different lenses – this most recent image was taken with the obvious choice, the 60mm macro lens), and I will also still try to get a few nice shots with the Ricoh. When you can't get out to shoot, you've got to find something around your home to fulfill the photoghraphic yearning ;) So you'll see more of this balcony beauty in the future.

Processed in DXO PhotoLab 4, where I've also applied two film simulations from the DXO FilmPack, first the Fuji Reala 100, then the DXO Cross Processed simulation of a Fuji Superior 200 film, because the latter adds a beautiful turquoise-and-hints-of-blue monotone look to any image. I've then further tweaked a few settings in Viveza (Brightness at +7, Contrast at -3) and in Color Efex (preset "Foliage Bump"), and finally, in ON1, added a Glow filter ("Diffuse Glow") and an HDR filter ("Subtle").

Btw could somebody help me with the ID? I'm guessing buttercup, but I'm not quite sure; it's a very sturdy flower with yellow blossoms and lots of herbaceous (you could also call it "weedy") looking green leaves. Thank you :)

HSoS and HSS Everyone, keep smiling, stay safe, and take care!

Entwickelt in DXO PhotoLab 4.

Another from Saturday morning when a huge bank of cloud came up our harbour and poured over the surrounding hills. It seemed to run out of steam before reaching the high points making for some pictorial interest. The Lone Soldier Memorial stands out in particular.

Thanks for comments!

ABOUT THE HISTORY OF VENICE CARNIVAL:

It is said that the Carnival of Venice was started from a victory of the "Serenissima Repubblica" against the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrico di Treven in the year 1162. In the honor of this victory, the people started to dance and make reunions in San Marco Square. Apparently, this festival started on that period and became official in the Renaissance. In the seventeenth century, the baroque carnival was a way to save the prestigious image of Venice in the world. It was very famous during the eighteenth century. It encouraged licence and pleasure, but it was also used to protect Venetians against the anguish for present time and future. However, under the rule of the King of Austria, the festival was outlawed entirely in 1797 and the use of masks became strictly forbidden. It reappeared gradually in the nineteenth century, but only for short periods and above all for private feasts, where it became an occasion for artistic creations.

After a long absence, the Carnival returned to operate in 1979. The Italian government decided to bring back the history and culture of Venice, and sought to use the traditional Carnival as the centerpiece of its efforts. The redevelopment of the masks began as the pursuit of some Venetian college students for the tourist trade. Today, approximately 3 million visitors come to Venice every year for Carnival. One of the most important events is the contest for la maschera più bella ("the most beautiful mask") placed at the last weekend of the Carnival and juried by a panel of international costume and fashion designers.
