The Pitstone Windmill as dusk falls with the mysterious and ancient Ivinghoe Beacon. This is where the historic Ridgeway Path, starts its journey.

The windmill has stood here since 1627 and it closed in 1894 after it was badly damaged in a storm. It was restored by a group of enthusiast`s and is now full operational and open to the public.

The Ridgeway path follows the high ground across the Chilterns for 87miles and ends at Avebury [ famous for its standing stones ] in Wiltshire. The path has been in use since the Neolithic period by early man as it was safer to travel across the hills than down in the valleys because of the impenetrable forests and danger of attack by wild animals. It has been used from medieval times right up to the 50s by travelling tradesmen [ journeymen ] and travelling sales men [peddlers] carrying their goods to the various markets in the many villages that it passes through. Its a haven for wildlife including butterflies as well as the flowers that grow on the rich chalk grassland and it was originally part of a deep lagoon off the coast of west Africa before the tutonic plates shifted millions of years ago.

There are many megalithic features on the Ridgeway including Bronze age Long Barrows { Graves } Iron age Hill Forts and Standing Stones.

An amazing place, I have walked sections of it. I hope to walk it in its entirety next year as long as my legs, and me can hold out that long!!!

Do hope you will like my pic and give us a quick Fave if you do! Its what your index fingers for....... mostly!!!!

Have a good week ahead!

Pat.

My beloved grey boy Legend! An action shot for the first day of 2023!

As a car enthusiast I do like it when I see a shiny bodywork on a classic car. That means, well kept, well maintained and it usually shows that the owner actually likes what he's doing. However, some times, the old timers need to be seen with the touch of time on them. I found this old truck parked on the yard of a winery at the Finger Lakes in NY. It quickly drew my attention, sitting there like an old rusty fella having proudly served its cause by hauling loads of grapes and crates of good wines.

L'anse Magaud

Magaud Cove

Ideally located a stone's throw from the city, the wild and unspoiled shore of Magaud can be discovered after a few efforts of walking! A jewel of the Mediterranean nestled between high cliffs, it reveals to swimmers the discreet charm of a beautiful pebble beach, sheltered by pine trees. Not recommended for the little ones and those who move with difficulty!

In Magaud, diving enthusiasts set off to explore the seabed, while young and old alike climb the many submerged rocks that line the beach. If the site is known to the people of Toulon for its steep walks, it is also scrupulously guarded in summer.

Catching sand at Piha Beach.

It's bucketing down in central Manchester (quel surprise) as DB Cargo Shed 66092 wheels the well-loaded 9.15am Trafford Park - Southampton Docks containers (4O21) towards Piccadilly Station.

Manchester city centre has been something of a giant building site for the last few years with high-rise apartment blocks springing up all over the place, and particularly so along this stretch of line up to and beyond Deansgate.

Given the route is operating close to capacity, for a rail enthusiast with plenty of cash to spare you might do a lot worse than seeking out one of the higher-floor options, trackside facing of course. I can see it now - tripod and camera permanently set up, patiently waiting for the atmospheric half-light and glistening street lamps reflecting off the wet ground, uber-eats on speed dial.......

The katana belongs to the nihontō family of swords, and is distinguished by a blade length (nagasa) of more than 2 shaku, approximately 60 cm (24 in).Katana can also be known as dai or daitō among Western sword enthusiasts, although daitō is a generic name for any Japanese long sword, literally meaning "big sword".[ As Japanese does not have separate plural and singular forms, both katanas and katana are considered acceptable forms in English.

Pronounced [katana], the kun'yomi (Japanese reading) of the kanji 刀, originally meaning dao or knife/saber in Chinese, the word has been adopted as a loanword by the Portuguese. In Portuguese the designation (spelled catana) means "large knife" or machete.

Hi, Me again...

In April 2021, I received my first 35mm as a gift from a fellow photography enthusiast. I seriously had no idea what I was doing but I immeditely knew I enjoyed it. The sound alone was enough to give me shivers!! Since then, I have shot a few rolls of film, find myself in possession of 5 new cameras, managed to process 2 rolls at home, 'scan', and now I'm ready to put them out there.

I don't ever profess to be a perfect photographer. If fact, I'm usually incredibly insecure. Digital photography always had me seeking perfection. It is silly because life isn't perfect, but regardless, I feared things like proper exposure and unconventional subjects. (Yes....insert eye roll here!)

The thing about film though, it has given me freedom it be imperfect, appreciate 'flaws' and embrace everyday life in an authentic and unpolished way. Film has given me permission to love the imperfect and see it for all its beauty. Also, the fact that my hands are on it from start to finish....well that... that alone gives me immense satisfaction.

So.....I'm saying be ready for the perfectly imperfect. And just to prove it...I resisted the urge to edit out my chicken pox scars. :-) I'm going to be brave and start sharing what I've been working on and what I love.

Here goes....

As photography enthusiasts we are each drawn to a specific genre. Granted we admire all sorts of pictures, but there is a certain class of images we particularly are drawn to. Some like portraiture, some still-life, others formal landscape photography, and some street...

It was a while before I found myself admiring New Topographics photos. I found my admiration was in their honesty and utilization of space. I found that I related to their aesthetic because I was immersed in that type of scenario all around me. Intentionally regular and bland and not necessarily "pretty" I found them quite worthy of my attention.

I found myself being a more honest photographer when I adapted the New Topographics style and followed their tenets. Then one day I went back through my SD cards and found that I had been taking such pictures on many occasions without knowing it.

There is quite some overlap between New Topographics and Uncommon Places picture making, but at their cores they are very distinct.

With this particular scene I tried to push the envelope and present a landscape far beyond the aesthetics of 'calendar' pictures.

This park was originally a cemetery for Western expatriates in Shanghai, while this marble pavilion was a mausoleum. After the cemetery was converted into a park, the wall of the mausoleum was removed and transformed into a beautiful marble pavilion. Today it is a place for Chinese chess enthusiasts to compete in the game.

Meet Edgar. Edgar is 59 and an enthusiastic boules player. Every weekend he meets here at the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt with his fellow players Johann, Manfred, Annelise and Liselotte (weather permitting). Two of the group are from Darmstadt and the other three come from Otzberg. The Mathildenhöhe is a well-known meeting place for boules players from the area, and it is not unusual to meet up to 100 of them here. I like the motion blur, and the concentration in Edgar's eyes. It almost looks like he is defying gravity, the way the heavy steel ball is hanging in the air. My thanks to the other members of this little team for their patience, and I hope they will forgive me for not using all of their photos.

And here is the legend of this lens for the optical enthusiast:‍

(Carl Zeiss Tele-Tessar 4.0 300mm on Sony A7 series): In an advertising paper by Carl Zeiss from the 80ˋs Zeiss itself describes the lens as follows:“ The relative high weight of this lens has a positive effect on free hand held captures“ (🤔1720g means 0,00172 tons! Wow! Greetings to the supposed author of this Zeiss text Arnold Schwarzenegger💪😁): For a more feather weighted tiny person like me that means, crouch down, hold tide this glassy stove pipe and... either you succeed with a really good photo or you end up kissing the ground in about 2 seconds😂😂😂. But the serious part is that the Tessar series by Carl Zeiss is a legendary lens series, known for its sharpness, these are the so called "eagles eyes“. They donˋt show the same 3D-effect as their "Sonnar" or „Planar“ collegues and not allways these fantastic close-up possibilities due to their lack of „floating elements“, but perform very good in the long distances for which they are built for. This photo demonstrates even its performance in some closer range. Good copies of them are rare to get nowadays. P.S. Later Zeiss built the lighter MM version with 1200g.

Hey fellow reef enthusiasts and followers!

About eight months ago, I faced a challenging moment in my marine adventure. While I was away on vacation, the caretaker of my beloved reef tank accidentally dosed it with a chemical that led to a complete wipeout. After a decade of nurturing a vibrant ecosystem filled with both hard and soft corals, it was a tough blow.

However, as any marine biologist will tell you, maintaining a delicate balance of hard and soft corals in a home reef tank is an art that comes with challenges and a thin margin for error. Each species has its own unique requirements, making their cohabitation tricky but incredibly rewarding.

Now, after seven months of hard work and dedication, I’m excited to share this photo of my complete restart! While it’s heart-wrenching to face setbacks like this, it’s also a chance to learn, rebuild, and create something even more spectacular. Join me on this journey as I work to establish a thriving reef community once again!

Happy reefing, everyone! 🌊✨

In 1989 locomotive haulage on the Marches route was beginning what would be a long resurgence. In April 1988 the introduction of the class 155s seemed to be the end of locomotive haulage. However, December 1988 when the class 155s were temporarily withdrawn, locomotive haulage was reintroduced, which continued through the 1990s.
