I spotted these juvenile tree swallows getting fed in mid air which was neat to see. Very entertaining to watch.

Maybe the third or fourth most common bird here... unlike the other commons, this one is entertaining and I think its reputation as an intelligent bird is well earned also. It's a great photo subject and will hop up into a tree for you for two or three Jordanian Dinars; very cooperative...

On Friday, there were eight or these sort of guarding this puddle, say 90 meters from a leaking irrigation pipeline and they seemed to be protective of the area holding two Bluethroats, two Robins, three Prinia and a pair of Chiffchaffs away... fun watching... could have been two or three Dead Sea Sparrows here also but I only saw enough of them to say they were sparrows... I was also hoping for some Linnets but they never showed up...

I just love these little rodants. They are very entertaining to watch. First class acrobats and very curious. And on top of that ...very beautiful. Its a pleasure to watch and photographe them.

...ignoring, for the moment, the fact that he eats all the birdseed.

See his cute little nose Larger

to watch, especially on a rainy day!!

Baby reptilian shape shifter continues to train and boss the old boy around. He is more than happy to do her bidding. In fact he is over joyed. She is his only friend.

The smell of food aroused the baby reptilian shapeshifter from a deep slumber. She smelled fried chimkin (chicken) and decided leaving her alien pod to get her some larapin food was worth it.

I had to contend with some serious backlighting with this one, so it has been rescued a little with some extra sliding in my editing program. This was one of the hundreds of galahs that visited the tall trees in and around the caravan park by the Murray river in Mannum, South Australia. Bright, cheerful, noisy and endlessly entertaining! Hard not to love them!

Happy Feathery Friday!

He likes the sound of my Sony. But he stops to listen in inconvenient places, thus he is cropped to within an inch of his life here because of unwanted bits of branch.

This fledgling Jackdaw arrived very wet, and vulnerable on our veranda this morning. It hung around for quite a while entertaining us by begging for food and jumping up onto my hand to be fed with a morsel of biscuit. It's parents were keeping an eye out for it and eventually managed to coax it back up where it belongs....

I'm very grateful for all your visits and would like to thank you now for stopping by, and any comments you may leave. Much appreciated, John...

"If you're walking in the woods, you're probably going to get more annoyed by a loud, screeching bird call than a soft, complex birdsong. But dark-eyed juncos are just the opposite. These birds will find and fight their soft-singing peers.

Now, lest we think of dark-eyed juncos as simply the philistines of the animal kingdom who go about brawling with any bird that inject a little creativity into its birdsong - which, I'll admit, is a most entertaining thought - there's a more straightforward logic at play here. As with most things, it's all about mating and reproduction.

Males juncos will let out a loud, boisterous call when they're asserting their territory, but they'll favor a softer, more melodic song when they're trying to attract a mate. Researchers at Indiana University found that, when they played these two different songs for some male juncos, the birds completely ignored the loud song but actively searched for whoever was making the softer call.

In the wild, any male junco that goes hunting for the fellow junco behind that song is basically looking for a fight. It appears the birds are far more interested in maintaining their access to potential mates than they are protecting their territorial claims. They may not be philistines, then, but it does appear the juncos care far more about sex than land...which I suppose, as these things go, it's a fairly sensible decision."

To entice his lady friend to come and check out what he had to offer, a dapper Ruddy Duck showed off his unique courtship display by beating his bill against his chest feathers rapidly. This action creates bubbles in the water. A fascinating and highly entertaining display to watch.

In Montreal they have several jazz bands entertaining the crowds in the afternoon, before the stage acts starts. This year, Montreal based 'The Early Jazz Band' was one group I managed to see and really enjoyed. 'The Early Jazz' takes their repertoire from the New Orleans swing of the 1920s, 1930s-1940s. Pure fun. I seen them first time, but one of Toronto's saxophone/clarinet musician, who comes to Montreal every year same time as me, played with few of them in Toronto. Jean-Sébastien Leblanc - clarinet is their leader and Dominic Desjardins - banjo/vocals is core member of the group. Jonathan Gagné – drum and Mathieu Roberge – double bass performed on this day.

A little back-story....

We have a family of Ground Squirrels that are quite entertaining. Over time I've befriended this little guy somewhat; he lets me get really close, about 10 ft. Long-story short, I've learned that if I talk baby-talk to him and make little chirping noises he seems to trust me. whereas most of the other ground squirrels in the area really keep their distance.

This morning I grabbed my 70-200 and went out looking for him. He was behind the garage scratching in the ground. I watched him burry a nut and then dig it back up and munch on it. you can see the hole he dug just behind the rock. It was a real joy to watch him in his natural environment up close.

Missing my wren family. I so hope they return in the spring. They were entertaining and facinating to watch.

A seamless border crossing from Alaska to the Yukon.

Here is a quick entertaining story about the Yukon,

Taking our regular walk along the Penticton canal here at home - we came across this homeless guy pushing a grocery cart loaded with planks of wood. As i passed i said to him "You building a house?" His reply, "I'm going to the Yukon". I don't think Monty Python could have come up with a better response. What was amazing about that response was first of all how unrealistic it was to consider walking to the Yukon towing a grocery cart filled with wood planks, but secondly and more importantly, that canal runs south to north and he was heading due south, so unless he was planning on taking the long way around i expect he won't arrive until sometime in 2045.

The Lytham 1940s Wartime Weekend took place between Saturday, August 17 and Sunday, August 18, 2024.

The two day spectacle saw thousands of people re-live the 1940s wartime era with a weekend of forties singing, dancing, weapons displays, historic vehicles, military charities, vintage traders and more.

After entertaining special guests at the Ryder Cup, CP's Royal Canadian Pacific business train crosses the Paynesville Subdivision, its first sub on the trip home to Calgary. Harvest is in full swing in the fields around Maple Lake, Minn., but this bean field, which a kindly farmer permitted me to use as a photo platform, has not yet fallen to a combine.

One of the most entertaining things about self-driving safaris is that once you're parked and quiet, the animals ignore you and just go about their business. This lion (and the others) walked so close to our vehicle a couple times that we rolled up the windows (just in case).

NOW OPEN: MIXMASTER CHALLENGE #70 - Chef: skagitrenee

CHEF skagitrenee wants us to be very still!

➤ Use a solid black (or very dark) background -or- a significant black (or dark) vignette.

➤ Your image should consist entirely of an artistic still life arrangement with at least three different elements.

➤ Include at least one complete vintage doll or figurine (not just the face) as one of the elements.

➤ Stick to a dominant color theme (such as the purple and green in Renee's entry below).

➤ But NO ANIMALS in any way, shape or form!

It was entertaining and revelatory to watch this adult Spotted Sandpiper feeding on insects — it would crouch down low to stalk the numerous flies on the mud, then dart its head out at one and often its quick strike would prove successful. It has a fly in its bill in this image, and several others are flying around (possible future prey). I watched this behaviour for quite a while, including observing juveniles getting the hang of the same technique www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/54364199219/in...

This intriguing natural history drama occurred at Weed Lake, near Langdon in southern Alberta, Canada.

It was so entertaining to watch this flock of cranes navigate this culvert. Instead of just taking off and flying, they would walk to the edge, survey the situation then one by one fly to the other side. Hundreds of images later I had to pick one.

There are times that I sit in my ground blind in the woods waiting for deer, fox, or other animals to show up. Sometimes all that shows up is a squirrel, but they can be very entertaining. This little guy sensed that I was there and put on a good show for about a half hour.

I'm sorry to have been away so long, hope to get back on track very soon!

Thank you all for the kind comments and notes and I wish everyone a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year

Much Love

When the tides are low and they don’t have to dangle from a limb to catch their prey, the Tri-colored Heron can be very entertaining while stalking the shallow waters of the bayou. Some of them will disregard your presence and walk right up to the canoe while they are hunting. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

This young Killdeer is taking a break among some cover, but it was actually energetically feeding and exploring most of the time I watched it at a spot in southern Alberta, Canada. That illustrates how the newly-hatched birds of this plover species are precocial (soon independent, rather than altricial young which require extended care from their parents). I spent about one-and-a-half hours watching the young and the adults of this particular Killdeer family, foraging, preening, and resting — including the entertaining sight of the young huddling under an adult to warm up and take it easy, as shown in the sequence in the next three photos.
