The Red Arrows sweeping by taken at the Scottish Air Show, Ayr, Scotland. Reds 1 to 5 make up the front section of the formation known as Enid while Reds 6 to 9 are known as Gypo. Fighting against a distant display line and shooting into the sun, it was hard work to get any detail or colour saturation into any of the shots. I loved the sweeping curve of the smoke trails in this. Best viewed large by pressing 'L'.

'We intercepted this tornado-warned-storm near the town of Waynoka in Oklahoma, This remarkable fast-moving supercell changed shape and colours minute by minute in the soft evening light, the intense orange of the sand sucked by the storm's updraft, and backlit by the setting sun with the green and blue of the intense rain and hail.'

We had intercepted a Tornado warned storm near Waynoka before we headed south towards Enid. This remarkable supercell was heading towards Enid, Oklahoma when we caught up with it. This storm gave some amazing structure with lightning bolts coming straight out of this rotating mesocyclone.

It makes Ringo’s day when his friend Enid pops out of his house to say hi and play for a bit when we are on our morning walk.
We had intercepted a Tornado warned storm near Waynoka before we headed south towards Enid. This remarkable supercell was heading towards Enid, Oklahoma when we caught up with it. This storm gave some amazing structure with lightning bolts coming straight out of this rotating mesocyclone.
Bookings now being taken for 2021 storm chasing season where I will be running tour 5 as a photography-based storm chase.

It is a well-known birdwatchers' factoid that the rendition of the Yellowhammer's song "A little bit of bread and no cheese" was made popular by Enid Blyton in her childrens' novels. It is even mentioned as a "titbit" on the BTO's Yellowhammer page app.bto.org/birdfacts/results/bob18570.htm . But it was mentioned in Beatrix Potter's Tale of Timmy Tiptoes some years earlier. When Timmy Tiptoes and his wife were out gathering nuts, two birds were singing. One sang "Who's bin digging-up my nuts" while the second sang "Little bita bread and-no-cheese! Little bit-a-bread an'-no-cheese!" (verbatim). I'm not sure what the "nuts" bird was but it alerted other squirrels to their activities. This story was written in 1911 which was more than 30 years before Enid Blyton mentioned it. But there are a couple of problems with this. The illustrated birds are not identifiable in Potter's paintings. Also Timmy Tiptoes is a Grey Squirrel, and although they had been introduced to Britain by 1911, they hadn't reached Cumbria where Beatrix Potter worked. Finally, the story is set in North America as there are Chipmunks and a Black Bear in the story, and Yellowhammers don't occur in North America. I also do not think that she ever visited North America.
Anyway, here's a male Yellowhammer belting out his cheese song that I photographed near the village of Shepley in West Yorkshire this week.

A Farmrail Northbound (yes, this IS Farmrail!) heads up their Grainbelt Subdivision near Okeene, OK for Enid and BNSF interchange. Looking for pure lashups of white, brown and orange diesels toiling across the Oklahoma countryside?
You may be disappointed, that's like finding a needle in a haystack. Lots of lease power around, company paint is not easy to come by!
