Power transmission lines in Korday pass. ADB supports Kazakhstan’s energy sector, with the aim of modernizing the country’s aging energy infrastructure. ADB has assisted with an energy-efficiency study and will support efficiency enhancing investments that will improve competitiveness and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Given that most of the power generation is coal-fired, this may include funding for clean coal technologies.

Grid supply in many developing countries is struggling to keep up with demand, resulting in unreliable and inadequate electricity service. Innovative solutions like decentralized renewable energy and energy efficiency can be integrated into traditional grid services to help solve the problem. Open, granular, and credible data on the quality of supply are key to catalyzing discussion about what actions can be taken, who will benefit from them, and how results of investments can be monitored.

The goal of this session is to share experiences with collecting data on the quality of supply and improving access to electricity along multiple dimensions.

Speakers:

Shantanu Dixit, Prayas Energy Group

Fabby Tumiwa, Institute for Essential Services Reform

Eco Matser, Energy Change Lab

Davida Wood, Senior Associate, Energy Access and Governance, World Resources Institute (chair)

Sunita Dubey, World Bank (discussant)

Investing in Healthier Lives through Clean Cookstoves in Honduras:

As many as 4 million people die each year due to indoor pollution, such as traditional cookstoves that pose numerous health risks to households (WHO). Replacing traditional cooking methods with clean cookstoves offers numerous health and economic benefits, including a reduction in GHG emissions by an average of 1.5 to 2.5 tons annually per stove, improvements in indoor air quality, reduced firewood consumption, and a cleaner and healthier environment inside the home.
