Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land lying between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Germanic, Latin and Slavic cultures. In 2009, it had a population of about 205,000 and it is the capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trieste province.

Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy from 1382 until 1918. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire (after Vienna, Budapest, and Prague). In the fin-de-siecle period, it emerged as an important hub for literature and music. However, the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Trieste's union to Italy after World War I led to some decline of its "Mittel-European" cultural and commercial importance. Enjoying an economic revival during the 1930s and throughout the Cold War, Trieste was an important spot in the struggle between the Eastern and Western blocs. Today, the city is in one of the richest regions of Italy, and has been a great centre for shipping, through its port (Port of Trieste), shipbuilding and financial services.

It's true... I like waterfalls!

There are moments that you wish to never end. This was one such situation.

The view was beautiful, with the amazing blue of the sea contrasting with the variegated green tones on land and all of it was covered by fantastic cloud formations, creating a unique atmosphere that was reinforced by the absence of any sound or movement.

Another slide restoration taken in Cornwall August 1996, and the image really does live up to the place name.

… the Hampstead Union Workhouse, to the left, was used from the early XIXth Century as an infirmary and hospital for society’s disfranchised: the poor, the unemployed, and of course unmarried women. It became a regular hospital as New End House when the first casualties started to flood from the Western front in 1914. It carried on as New End Hospital well into the XXth Century.

The building to its right was registered as a pub, the City Arms, until at least 1905.

Today they are both part of New End Primary School, the main state school in Hampstead.

The water gets cold and the sun does not shine as often:). For me the SUP season is over...

As you walk down the trail, you come across several waterfalls, one more beautiful than the others. They've now installed stairs, which I don't think were there 3 years ago at my last visit.

Happy Monday all!

Kristiansand Boardwalk is a street in the town centre Kvadraturen in Kristiansand, Norway.

The street is in most of its course closed to the passage of motor vehicles, but operates in the tourist season in connection with sightseeing. From where the street Strandpromenaden ends in the eastern corner of the town centre, there is a continuing boardwalk upwards the river Otra. The boardwalk got the Nordic Green Space Award in 2013.

Baburgh St Aidan's Church.

According to Bede, St Aidan built a wooden church outside the castle wall in AD 635, and he died here in AD 652. A wooden beam preserved inside the church is traditionally said to be the one on which he rested as he died.

The present church dates from the late 12th century,

One of the leaves from the Acer in the garden, dying out in the last of the summer sun.

A single Pano-Sabotage shot taken on June 12, 2015 in Times Square, New York, overlaid with the same shot only expanded in size and moved off-centre to create a kind of "structural shimmering". This method harkens back to my student days when I would deliberately print layers off-register when doing silkscreens to achieve a slightly disorienting 'vibrating' effect.

Number 3 in a series of "End Game" images that deal with the notion that we've gone too far in our relationship with the planet. In nature there are usually disastrous results for any species that overpopulates and destroys its own environment. Why would we be different ?
