encaustic on wood

October 2010
I'm not sure when it started, this irrational fear I have of the telephone. How crazy is that? Why couldn't it be snakes or airplanes or elevators? Normal phobias. No, I am terrified of checking my voice mail, of getting a phone call, of having to make one... all of it sends me into full panic mode: heart racing, knot in my gut, nausea and that unbearable sense of dread. And so I avoid my phone as much as I can. I'm not making this up. And I'm no idiot. I know it is not the actual telephone that chills my blood. Rather, it is fear of bad news, fear of sounding stupid, fear of someone being mad at me, fear of what the message might require of me, fear that I can't handle it... believing that I'm not good enough. It always comes down to that.
