Female Bolitotherus cornutus (Panzer, 1794). Found at Mayville Ledge Beech-Maple Woods SNA in east-central Wisconsin. Dodge County, Wisconsin, USA.
Found in mixed hardwood forest. It was on a bracket fungus (Ganoderma?) growing out of the trunk of a standing dead hardwood tree. When I was photographing it, it seemed to be defecating on the fungus. When I processed the photos, I was surprised to see that it was actually encapsulating an egg it had laid on the surface of the fungus.
Single exposure, moderately cropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-26EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie and plastic cup diffuser.
This photo really encapsulates why this band has been one of my favorite bands to see in concert. The name of the band is Soapbar (I'm not sure if it's all one word or what, they're based in Athens, GA) and the music wasn't anything earth-shattering (their last song was ear-shattering but that's besides the point :-) ). They just had so much energy during their songs and seemed be having so much fun that you couldn't help but like them. I talked with them a little after the show and they are all really nice people too.

The Sleight Of Mind Set Workshops - February 2013SEEING THROUGH ILLUSIONS
Email not displaying correctly? View the online version
Hi,
It is without doubt that we live in an increasingly chaotic, complex and often confusing world of speeding change and a constant flow of problems. On top of this, we are also constantly bombarded with noise, both visual and auditory. To thrive we have to be able to understand the current environment and stand out from the noise.
Mindsways' Core Idea
The core idea behind MindSways is that we can work with our environment more effectively if we can both understand it more and stand out from it. Mindsways is all about understanding how the mind is swayed (Mind Sways) and about gaining insights into how the mind works (Minds Ways). By doing looking at both of these, you can understand and stand out from your environment.
We know that our minds and what we think encapsulates our drives, ambitions, personality and our very essences. This holds true for every single one of us. As Stephen Covey wrote; "our attitude determines our altitude". It's this belief that the Sleight of Mind Set Workshops are built on. For more information on this, please go to mindsways.com/SMS/
The Sleight of Mind Set Workshops are about exploring these insights through learning and applying Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry. The day is about getting you to tap into the enduring popularity of magic and mystery by combining the ingenuity shown by Derren Brown and Dynamo with the popularity and interest evidenced by Amazon's "Most Popular Tags". For more information on this, see mindsways.com/SMS/
Magic is a golden resource full of rich information about our psychology, beliefs and behaviours. By understanding Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry, we can understand how the same cognitive effects are at work in business, advertising, therapy and all personal relationships.
Mindful Illusions
Magic, in particular mind magic and visual illusions are real-world demonstrations of how our minds work. Because of their subjective nature, illusions are powerful expressions of we fail to match what we see to the real world around us. This is what the SNT kit shows. The kit is both available separately and forms part of the Sleight of Mind Set days.
The SNT kit is designed to give you a sense and understanding of what is going on beneath the surface, allowing you to grasp the psychology of every illusion. A strong visual illusion makes you;
See something that isn't there
Fail to see something that is
Or, see something different to what is there
Remember, you can't believe what you see, but you see what you believe. It's easy to imagine that these illusions happen only on pieces of paper, on computer screens or during magic tricks; easy, but wrong.
They're significant in all areas of our lives, affecting;
Our Identity (How you see yourself)
Our Aspirations (What you want to do in life)
Our Drives (Why you get out of bed in the morning)
Our Ambitions (Where you want to go)
Our Personality (Who you are)
And our very essence. Illusions, then, play a critical role in your life and in everyone else's. They determine how you act, behave and think.
Psychological Artistry - All is not as it Appears
One fascinating example of perspective and insight is shown in this well-known Fred Astaire clip. Click here to see it. Perspectives determine how we:
View and interpret our experiences
Make decisions
Filter our insights
Govern our assumptions
Act and behave
It is this unseen primary influence that magicians know and understand and use very well.
Interesting examples of how all is not as it appears are the McGurk effect, Richard Wiseman's "The Incredible Colour Changing Card Effect" and a twist on a classic Fred Astaire dance routine. Please take a look here or go to mindsways.com/SMS. I would love to know what you think. These illustrate both the power and the approach of Psychological Artistry.
Mind Magic, as well as being entertaining and fascinating, can also be used to illustrate and gain insight into human nature and our psychology. Using Psychological Artistry in your delivery adds both the spice of excitement and taps into this enduring popularity of magic and psychology.
Over the past two years, hundreds of people have found the benefits of including Mind Magic and Psychological Artistry in what they do, to see what others have said, please go here.

Amanda's preparations of the placenta for encapsulating took quite a long while.
First she tried to get as much blood as possible out through a hole in the organ. Then she cut off the umbilical cord and finally she sliced the placenta very thinly. The pieced were put to dehydrate all night through, until 1 p.m. the next day. Finally, this evening, Amanda came for the encapsulating. Because the placenta was rather big and healthy she got enough to make 220 capsules out of it, usually the placenta provides about 150 capsules.
The placenta is very nutritious, it continues to nourish even after the birth of the baby.

museumPASSmusees 2024 - Wiels - Jana Euler - Alexis Blake
Jana Euler?s exhibition Oilopa, a contraction of the terms Oil (painting) and Europa, unfolds into a semi-utopian land, reversing the ascendant flows of financial figures while extrapolating on cycles of surplus and vacuity.
Originally conceived as a performance, Crack Nerve Boogie Swerve embraces concepts such as transparency, resistance, resonance and disruption?breaking free from norms, liberating oneself from the constraints of oppression and stretching the boundaries of art institutions. At WIELS, Alexis Blake (b. 1981, US/NL) expands the scope of a live work into a performative exhibition that encapsulates its past iterations while slowly transforming the present one.

In the Spacecraft Assembly and Encapsulation Facility-2 (SAEF-2), the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team is mating the Mars Pathfinder lander (lower element) with the backshell (suspended element) of the protective aeroshell. In this view, the backshell is being positioned above the lander, which is actually installed in the backshell by raising it from below. Parachutes will be installed on the backshell, and this assembly will be installed atop the heat shield -- the backshell and heat shield together comprise the Pathfinder's aeroshell. When the lander descends through the Martian atmosphere the deployed parachutes will help slow the lander down and then pull the backshell away from it. Other upcoming activities in SAEF-2 include mating the entry assembly of lander and aeroshell to the cruise stage and then mating the fully assembled Pathfinder to its upper stage booster. The spacecraft will then be transferred to Launch Complex 17B, where it will be installed atop a Delta II expendable launch vehicle. Liftoff is scheduled for Dec. 2 at the beginning of a 24-day launch period.

Nearly 1,000 Students to Participate in WSSU Commencement on May 15
WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Christina Wareâs story is one of the many inspiring testimonials of the nearly 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students from near and afar who are expected to participate in Winston-Salem State Universityâs commencement ceremony on Friday, May 15, at 9:45 a.m., at Bowman Gray Stadium, 1250 South Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
Academy Award-winning recording artist, activist and actor Common will be the keynote speaker. There are no guest limits or ticket requirements for the ceremony.
It is conceivable that Wareâs story of work ethic, undeniable spirit and enthusiasm encapsulates the sentiment of her graduating 2015 classmates.
Ware, 43, of Winston-Salem, is quite active on and off campus as a mentor to other students, a member of the non-traditional student organization, the first president of Epsilon Chapter 130 of Tau Sigma National Honor Society at WSSU, a wife and proud mother of two. She is also legally blind. She wants to blaze trails, set examples and raise the bar for others with disabilities.
âIn 2007, I lost my eyesight. After a six-month pity party, I decided to continue my education and make a difference for others. Since 2008, I have spent every day of my life proving to society that having a disability does not mean we are weak. I am now an advocate for persons with disabilities,â Ware, a business major, said, "We are not handicapped, we are handy capable!"
Ware, who can be described as always pleasant and having an unlimited enthusiasm for life, says every day alive is like Christmas. She demands to be treated like everyone else and has been noted to say, âI may physically fall, but mentally I can get back up and pull a 4.0 semester.â After graduation she wants to start a Kosher/Halal foods business and become active on community boards.

This encapsulates Jay a lot more than the photo I chose for my 365 yesterday.
After talking to him for a while we left and sat in the car before I said "you know I think I need to take a picture of him". So we went back inside (to his confusion) and I told him about my project and he kindly agreed to let me take his photo. Before doing so however he ran off to get something; and that something was this hat. I'm still confused about it don't worry, but I kind of like how this photo really captures the true awkwardness of our interaction.

An encapsulation of Lawrence, Kansas. As part of the Live on Mass concert series, the Get Up Kids performed an outdoor show to a huge crowd right on Massachusetts Street. Andy White wasn’t scheduled to shoot the show but usually brings a camera along for casual shots. Being the local legends they are, the Get Up Kids drew a huge crowd. When the show started, White’s brain switched gears. The light was perfect, the energy was amazing and he received access to shoot some of his very favorite photos of year. His note to photographers: Always bring a camera!
Francis Bacon
Oil, pastel and aerosol paint on canvas
After the Bullfight
The bullfight paintings of 1969 encapsulated Bacon’s meditations on the blurring of man and beast. Nearly two decades later, he made his only triptych on the subject.
Here, the excitement is over, leaving behind the wounds of the matador, the bowed head and bloodied horns of the bull, with a spectral ‘fury’ hovering above.
When evoking the aftermath of the bullfight, Bacon may have had in mind Federico García Lorca’s 1935 poem ‘Lament for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías’, with its repeated refrain ‘At five in the afternoon’, which readers of the poem discover is the time of day that the young bullfighter dies.
Bacon was convinced that there ‘is an area of the nervous system to which the texture of paint communicates more violently than anything else’. His fascination with the physicality of our bodies and the unmoderated behaviour of animals were touchstones for his art.
Beginning with the hybrid creatures of the 1940s and animal studies of the 1950s, these interests ultimately found expression in his powerful paintings of the human form, which continue to resonate in new ways as generations pass.

From the exhibition
Francis Bacon: Man and Beast
(January — April 2022)
Irish-born artist Francis Bacon was the horse-breeder’s son who became one of the most important painters of the 20th century.
An openly gay man at a time when homosexuality was illegal, he was banished from his conservative family home by his father at 16. After that, he drifted through Berlin and Paris before establishing himself in London, with his formative years running parallel with some of the 20th century’s most profoundly disturbing events.
This powerful exhibition will focus on Bacon’s unerring fascination with animals: how it both shaped his approach to the human body and distorted it; how, caught at the most extreme moments of existence, his figures are barely recognisable as either human or beast.
It also explores how Bacon was mesmerised by animal movement, observing animals in the wild during trips to South Africa; filling his studio with wildlife books, and constantly referring to Eadweard Muybridge’s 19th-century photographs of humans and animals in motion. Whether chimpanzees, bulls, dogs, or birds of prey, Bacon felt he could get closer to understanding the true nature of humankind by watching the uninhibited behaviour of animals.
Spanning Bacon’s 50-year career, highlights include some of Bacon’s earliest works and his last-ever painting, alongside a trio of bullfight paintings which will be exhibited together for the first time.
