Karen Dudley, a resource soil scientist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) smiles in the background as the photographer captures a shot of the NRCS, Web Soil Survey interface during the first ‘Wednesday Training for New Employees’ series of the new year at the NRCS, New Hampshire Concord field office on January 15, 2020. Dudley, along with soil scientist Peter Whitcomb instructed the training, which focused on the foundations of soil properties and the use of the NRCS Web Solid Survey tool. The NRCS, WSS is an openly-available, web-delivered database of soil types and locations throughout the United States and can assist landowners in making effective conservation choices with their farms and lands. With the amount of data available in the WSS, landowners can often become overwhelmed. To more efficiently assist them, this lecture demonstrated how to use the information on WSS to provide the foundation of a solid conservation plan. This, and other training sessions slated for this year, are designed to assist newer employees in becoming more efficient and effective with their customer-landowners seeking conservation advice.
