58 doubles pages...
During my exhibition in Noirmoutier, I started a wonderful Stillman & Birne sketchbook, to keep in memory those wonderful 2 weeks I spent in "Les Salorges" (an old salt barn) on the port, watching the same paysage each day and enjoying the wonderful activity! I drew 58 double spread so I'll upload them every day.
Los Gigantes is a resort town in the Santiago del Teide municipality on the west coast of the Canary Island Tenerife. Its main feature are the giant rock formations, Acantilados de Los Gigantes, that rise from the sea to a height of 500-800 metres (1,640–2,625 ft) after which the town has been named. Los Gigantes means "The Giants".
View from Los Gigantes
Nearby to the south are the resorts of Puerto de Santiago and Playa de la Arena. 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the North is the village of Masca which can be reached by boat or car.
The town has a marina surrounded by concrete walls to dampen the effect of the rough seas around the area. A small black sand beach lies between the rocks and the marina. The marina has a boulevard with many restaurants. Close to the harbour is a lido.
The cliffs at Los Gigantes, Acantilados de Los Gigantes in Spanish, are one of the island's major tourist attractions. There are three viewpoints in the village, the main one on main road to towards Tamaimo, another above the sports club and a third on a coastal path around the Hotel Barcelo. The village has many small shops and restaurants servicing the tourists that visit the area, especially on the one way road loop around church and plaza, and also near to the marina and beach.
Each year, in February, there is a carnival which parades through the village. As can be expected of a town resort, Los Gigantes has only one hotel but lots of apartments compared to regular residences.
Two concrete slipways, also known as Embarcation Hards, stand in Torquay Harbour as a reminder of the town's role in the D-Day Normandy landings of 6th June 1944.
The two Torquay Hards were constructed in the early part of 1943 in readiness for the planned invasion, and were part of a system of 68 individual Hards that stretched from Falmouth to Felixstowe - there were also two Hards at nearby Brixham. The Torquay Hards are to an unusual design, being supported on concrete pillars; their size and gradient was dictated by the topography of the site. They were accompanied by berths which allowed up to four vessels to be loaded simultaneously.
It was from these Hards that the 4th US Infantry Division set off on the night of Tuesday 5th June 1944, to launch their initial assault on Utah Beach the following morning. Over the following weeks the Hards were kept busy, with the vessels involved in the initial landing operating a continous shuttle service loading men, vehicles and supplies for the incursion into German-occupied Europe.

Taormina is a comune and small town on the east coast of the island of Sicily, Italy, in the Province of Messina, about midway between Messina and Catania. Taormina has been a very popular tourist destination since the 19th century. It has popular beaches (accessible via an aerial tramway) on the Ionian sea, which is remarkably warm and has a high salt content. Taormina can be reached via highways from Messina from the north and Catania .Just south of Taormina is the Isola Bella, a nature reserve. Tours of the Capo Sant' Andrea grottos are also available. Taormina is built on an extremely hilly coast, and is approximately a forty-five minute drive away from Europe's largest active volcano, Mount Etna.A stay at Taormina is not just a seaside vacation. This area, rich in charm and history, must be experienced in a spirit that is outside the ordinary, and for one simple reason: here, everything is extraordinary. Every stone is a thousand-year-old piece of history, the glorious sea reflects Taormina's beauty, as it shapes and marks the passage of time, and the places that enchanted the Greeks create to this day a vibrant and exciting ambiance. But trying to describe in words what makes Taormina unique is truly difficult.

Burton Fair Queen and attendants brave the unusual cold.
A cold wet Saturday, many of the displays where canceled to to the bad weather.
Burton was first documented in the Domesday Book and historically was on the route which travelers would take from London to Birkenhead. Owing to its location on trade routes, it is thought to have developed at a faster rate than neighbouring communities. Indeed, during the fourteenth century trade and travel allowed Burton to flourish, standing as it did near the site of embarcation for the ferry to North Wales and on the main route to the city of Chester. However, the build up of silt in the River Dee led to a decrease in shipping trade, and Burton's prosperity took a downturn when the river course was diverted in the eighteenth century. Wikipedia

The infamous embarkation photo, whose fame spread before we even saw the printed version ourselves! While queuing at the coffee bar the first day at sea a strange lady we'd never met before (but who turned out to be a poster on the Ships and Dip forum whose name I recognised from her posts) suddenly turned around and said she knew who we were. Actually, here's the story in her (AZSally) own words:
"Here is the story.
After the naked pic Penny and I ran to the photos to see our embarcation. When I saw this picture I made up a little story to myself and told Penny. The story is that the guy on the left has a mischievieous look and is thinking, "I have my hand down his pants," now Peter looks frightened and he is thinking, "He has his hand down my pants (use anxeity here)." So 20 minutes later in the coffee line from hell in which I only wanted a GODDAM HOT TEA, I run into Peter and his friend and I'm like, "Oh my Gha, its you guys!" And I told them about their pic before they got to see it, thereby tainting the photo for them. I feel a little bad about that buy honestly, isn't a good laugh at someone else's expense well worth it? Anyway, a good story to tell is always worth a tainted photo.
Peter's friend assured me he did NOT have his hand down Peter's pants and Peter confirmed that.
Cheers"
As you can imagine we went straight to the photo place to check out the photo and ended up buying it. I wasn't expecting much from the photo after the photographer deadpanned "You're really excited to be here aren't you?" after he took the shot but Sally's disturbing interpretation and the meeting at the coffee bar meant we had to buy it - like she said, it's forever tainted, but in a good way :)

The pier, opened in 1869, is the only operating Grade I listed seaside pier in the UK. To thrive it needed to offer an enhanced visitor experience which will contribute to the long term future of the pier.
The new cafe/restaurant, a education/meeting space and toilet facilities are all in a modern building which is set down into the existing ramp linking the pier to land. This new building has been carefully designed to retain the integrity of the original pier. Views of the pier head buildings from the land side are not impeded by the largely transparent glazed roof of the tea room part of the new visitor facilities, which emerges from the slope of the ramp.
Part of the roof of the new visitor facilities forms an additional viewing platform, with access to the new building via a glazed "funnel", the form of which reflects the pier's long standing function as an embarcation point for pleasure steamers.
The remaining accommodation is set underground (under the ramp's surface), contained by the existing stone walls, with a single window under the pier giving glimpses of the elegant form of the arched pier supports. Architects: O'LearyGoss. Main contractor: Beard Construction

The remaining accommodation is set underground (under the ramp's surface), contained by the existing stone walls, with a single window under the pier giving glimpses of the elegant form of the arched pier supports. Architects: O'LearyGoss. Main contractor: Beard Construction
