Spectacled Owl photographed in the rainforest of Costa Rica. Its bright yellow eyes and distinctive facial markings make it one of the most striking owls of Central and South America. Perched on a branch among the lush green canopy, this elusive nocturnal raptor is a true highlight for wildlife and bird photographers exploring the tropics.
This male screech owls was often perched very low in a small bush and sometimes out in the open during the day.

My owling karma continues and what a super fun, summer I had with my sightings. I never dreamed about seeing the toughest, three Washington owls this past weekend, and finished with SEEING all 15 owls species for Washington. The last one seen, is one of the most elusive to get a good visual and photo, an adult BOREAL OWL! So it was very special! What a beautiful owl, with it's stunning facial mask and sparkles!!
I have worked very hard the last few years trying to understand all the owls, and his has paid off tremendously. I am grateful and my passion for the owls, has gotten even more intense.

Didn't expect much on a warm, sunny day but I thought I give it a go with my imitation. Within a couple of minutes, this pygmy owl flew in to check us out. Super fun.

Another fun encounter this weekend with this elusive, small owl. What amazing camouflage with this FLAMMULATED OWL (gray morph). It responded to my imitation and I was able to find it hiding in plain view.
Its beautiful rufous tones, dark eyes, and low, booming hoots are all so alluring. I think this is my favorite small owl! I decide which morph is prettier; the gray or red.

This teen, Northern Saw-Whet owl was very curious to my whistles and came in close. I m learning so much from their different skiews, whines, and vocalizations. It's not as black and white as I thought between their skiews versus the boreal owls. Always best to get a visual for confirmation.

I had a great streak of luck and birding karma this late spring. While driving 30-35 mph down a forest road one late morning, a big owl flew right over my Jeep. With excitement, I shouted, "Great Gray, Great Gray! We immediately pulled over, and luckily, I re-located the majesty owl. I confidently told my clients, there must be a nest around. A minute later, the male flew across the meadow to hunt as we admired him in perfect light, perched on a beautiful snag. Not too long, one of my client's bionic ears detected an odd noise or whimper. I questioned her and imitated the possible sound. She acknowledged the mystery sound! With my hooter instincts, we walked in the direction of where she thought she heard the bird! A few hundreds yards later, BAM; I found a female great gray siting on a ponderosa snag.
What amazing karma and team work. Natural great gray nests are always rare to find and we were delighted to find it in a new area. What a magical moment.
