“Welcome to our studio in the Highlands of Scotland. Whether you are a painter, or an art collector; someone who is interested in the world of Elphen Chronicles or a collector of published works; or someone who is simply intrigued by watching an artist at work, we do hope you enjoy peeking over my shoulder as I work away at my easel.

The purpose of this box-set of videos is to share with you the traditional oil painting processes that I exploited to produce this unique Masterworks oil painting ‘Starway to Shimmista’, created specifically for the wraparound jacket for my book, ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’. So do please join me on this Starway that takes me from the first drawing out of this oil painting, to the final brush-stroke; all of which was filmed in real-time and most of which is shared in this box-set - available to STREAM via our official accounts on :-

‘Starway to Shimmistra’ is one of the twenty Masterworks oil paintings that chronicle the Elphen Folklore of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’, a collection that took over five years to complete. It depicts the entire journey that Fizz takes across the planet Shimmistra, with her new-found Elphen companion, Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer and Swarm Leader; from their emergence through the Starway, to the ultimate goal and completion of Webstrand’s assignment, via Arktura and the Jade Lake and, a significant, not to mention momentous, meeting with Starfire, the Elphen Seer.

In addition to these Masterworks oil paintings, which form the basis of my book; I have also completed an extensive portfolio of over one-hundred, story-setting Vignette oil paintings, to accompany the narrative that chronicles this meaningful event, one witnessed by Fizz with life-changing consequences.

For these I developed a technique specifically for this collection, one that is unique to me. These Vignettes were also filmed in real-time, so that we could share the process, along with other behind-the-scenes films; all of which can be found as here on Patreon, as we continue to roll-out new content.

As always, this comes with best wishes from Eileen and myself, not to mention, Sunita and Liza and of course, our Elphen friends, Webstrand and Starfire.”

As many folk know, a little over twenty years ago we embarked on the first phase of a special project, Book 1 in my ‘Elphen Chronicles’. Now, after working intensely over the past five years on a substantial collection of large oil paintings, we are looking forward to sharing the second phase of this project, which centres on Book 2.

All will be gradually revealed over the coming months through our occasional newsletter and FB etc.

Meanwhile, do take care and thankyou for watching. If you are wondering about our online tutorials, be assured, we have made a commitment to continue with these and have no current plans to drop them. It is just that my Fine Art work continues to be concentrated on my Elphen Chronicles.

We also wish to extend our grateful thanks to Sunita Gahir, who, as our Design Director & Co-Producer is enabling us to proceed with this project and is responsible for the new look for the Elphen Chronicles.

And finally, a special thankyou to the talented Musician and Composer Liza Mulholland, who generously gave permission for her beautiful piece ‘Cadal Sàmhach’ – Track 3 on her solo CD Fine’n’Rosy.

Liza’s own word from her CD sleeve notes.

“Is there anything more beautiful for a new parent than to gaze on your sleeping child? To study your baby’s face, watch their little movements and the gentle whisper of their breath, knowing they are safe, secure and at restful ease; in such moments all seems well with the world. This was how I felt when my son, Roddy, was small, and loved those quiet times when I could simply watch him as he slept – indeed I still do! This is a tune I wrote for him and those precious, dream-like, end-of-day moments.”

Original track recorded in Gaelic – translating as follows:-

Quiet sleep, tranquil sleep

Dreams without dread

Quiet sleep, tranquil sleep

Let your head down, my babe.

“Welcome to my studio in the Highlands of Scotland from where we bring you ‘Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles’.

As a child, I was very solitary and often played, on my own, in my Grandmother’s garden. This was full of wild flowers and weeds, but in its depths there was an area, or a swathe, of green grass. It grew in a perfect circle and it was inevitable that I would sit in its very centre. Half closing my eyes I would suddenly be surrounded by a host of blue butterflies; these flew in a clockwise direction, it seemed, around me and I was entranced by their magic.

As an adult I always wanted to capture the essence of this magic, which is how, in the mid-nineties, I found myself bringing to life the mysterious creatures that are the Elphen. During the light of day, I would take up my brush and watercolour paints to work on a set of eighteen unique illustrations that were enchanting me. As I painted, the story of Elphen began to develop in my mind. I became so engrossed that all other paintings and books were forsaken in order to free my imagination and allow me to concentrate on completing my first book in the Elphen Chronicles, in which I recount a particular legend involving the Elphen Swarm Leader, Lacewing and an itinerant artist, by the name of Artimus Glin.

However, it had always been my hope to set aside enough time to work on a collection of oil paintings, with which to depict and chronicle another significant Elphen event. Fast forward a few years later and once again, the lure of the Elphen was too great to resist. I began work on another unique collection of Masterworks oil paintings - twenty in all - which were to take me well over five years to create.

As before, the Elphen folklore of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ took over my life, as I worked on these all-important Masterworks. The composition for each Elphen portrait and scene-setting painting was originally based on my first draft of the narrative. Soon, however, I found myself changing the interpretation of the story within these paintings, as the world of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’ took hold. Ultimately the developing paintings had an ever-changing influence on the story until both my paintings and story reached a natural conclusion.

But this was merely the completion of the first stage for we were about to embark on the next exciting phase. The book had to be designed. We had a million ideas to explore. Why not some dedicated Elphen music? At the very least the Elphen song, which comes into the story? Our ‘wish’ list was growing as we added special items; the studio was filling with examples of uniquely produced work by talented craftspeople. What if we filmed the work-in-progress to share online so that people could peek behind-the-scenes at the various creative processes?

So where are we now? First off, the final and unique design for my lavishly illustrated book, ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’, has been completed by Sunita Gahir, our Design Director for which I produced a further, one-hundred-and-sixteen, vignette oil paintings. Quite different to my Masterworks, these vignettes, scattered throughout the book, portray even more insight into the Elphen folklore of ‘Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer’.

And how about something else that’s a little bit different, something unique to us? A new concept; something that reflects the work we’ve been doing online for many years. An illustrated audio-book maybe – or - what about something more than that?

“We all live in a world of scepticism, disbelief and doubt, but imagine instead, one filled with mystery and magic. This is no ‘wonderland’, but here wishes actually can come true in a way that you would hardly believe; a place where imagination is more precious than diamonds and diamonds are as common as sand.

It is within all our abilities to visit this far-distant land, but you will need good reason, for the journey is fraught with peril. Neither will you be the first, for many have sought the way. One such wayfarer was an Earthling by the name of Fizz, whose creative imagination and zest for life, leads her on a remarkable journey. A journey that was to change her life forever, on which, her guide is none other than the Elphen Swarm Leader, Webstrand.

We invite you to listen-along with me, as I personally read through the nine chapters of my unabridged, original chronicle, of this wondrous adventure, in which Fizz is taken by her new-found Elphen friends on a sometimes exciting, sometimes terrifying, voyage of discovery.

Watch-along, as I depict the story of 'Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer' through my scene-setting original Masterworks and the many story-telling illustrations that capture this epic tale.

All accompanied by Liza’ Mulholland’s original Elphen Music, that wends its way through the good times and bad, the joy and horrors, the magical and imagined.

If, like Fizz, you also come to believe in Elphen and search carefully along a star’s path, you may find what appears to be a small glowing ember in the undergrowth; but be on your guard, for once you start the search, it can soon become a quest.

Next time you look up into the royal blue of an evening sky and spy a falling star, think of the Elphen. Somewhere, not so far away, they are gathering their numbers to follow that star until it reaches Earth; where, hidden in the undergrowth they will find their treasure - an Elphen Egg that has traversed the Starfields to reach its destination. You may well see them on their journey home, carrying their egg between them. Tiny specks against the night sky; only visible when they cross a bright star, or the face of a full moon.”

PAUL TAGGART

Scottish Highlands-based professional Fine Artist & Author, Paul Taggart has a passion for painting - his life’s work - with more than forty years as a practising Professional Fine Artist to his name. Having regularly exhibited in commercial and public galleries in his earlier years, he turned to private sales some thirty years ago and enjoys a dedicated following. For his principal selling collection, mainly comprising paintings in oil; Taggart specialises in traditional techniques that exploit a range of processes. For his various Masterworks collections, Paul Taggart has traditionally worked on dedicated projects that focus on his signature feature – the importance of light and its influence within a composition. His work covers a wide variety of genre, including landscapes, figurative pieces, conversation works and most especially, ‘living studies’.

“Whilst I have developed my own method of working, the ‘craft’ of my painting owes everything to a repertoire of processes rooted in an established heritage of traditional methods. Without the specialist knowledge passed down from artists through the centuries, it would not be possible for me to work in the style that I have carefully nurtured and developed over my professional life as an artist.

It is a method that requires an unhurried approach, with each oil painting built layer upon layer, to capture the very heart of the subject. I use a complex range of bold and subtle heritage techniques to create depth, in order to produce a seemingly three-dimensional space filled with light, space, mood and movement.

There is nothing to surpass the sheer richness of oil painting - a medium that can be opaque or transparent; thick or thin in its application; where the surface of the painting, being physical, affects light falling on it. The use of traditional techniques such as glazing and tinting, enriches and enhances the surface quality of the paint and I use these traditional techniques extensively to achieve the quality I seek.

My goal - to capture the very essence of a moment in time – one that will evoke a memory, or an emotional reaction.”

ART WORKSHOP WITH PAUL

Paul's enthusiasm for painting is reflected in his popularity as a tutor. Having developed a step-by-step method, through fully narrated demonstrations, these were translated into the published word in the form of unique 'artstrips©' the basis of Paul's fourteen books and published tutorials on the subject of learning to paint.

NOW HIS PASSION IS SHARING WITH A WORLD-WIDE AUDIENCE, THROUGH AN EVER-GROWING COLLECTION OF ON-LINE Painting & Drawing Tutorials.

It is in my very soul to create works of art, I have a passion for doing so, which has been my life’s work. The 'craft' of my painting owes everything to a repertoire of processes rooted in an established heritage. When you visit my Original Masterworks gallery and click-through on any individual painting, you will discover the story behind each subject depicted in my paintings along with a description of the composition and the method of its creation. In the main my works of art are ‘narrative’ in nature – my intention being to tell a story, to portray an event/scene that strikes a chord, or is meaningful in a particular time-frame. All this and more on Paul Taggart’s blog - www.artworkshopwithpaul.com/blog

What do you reckon to Paul Taggart's snazzy waistcoat, an original design, created and produced by Ruth Black Textile Artist? Check-out those fabulous shimmering Elphen wings, which are constantly changing colour as Paul moves under different light conditions - an amazing technique that Ruth Black developed especially for this waistcoat (which you can see being made in this free-to-view film - vimeo.com/ondemand/elphenchronicles/242025844….

Spotted the embroidered pocket border? What about the five hand-made buttons (each featuring a significant Elphen rune? The Three Quills emblem is an exquisite example of Ruth Black's skill with embroidery, as are the 'kissing Elphen' on the reverse of the waistcoat (must get a photo for that to share!!) More on the embroidered items resting on the table, so watch this space, as they say!

“Greetings from our current workspace, temporarily relocated from our beloved Steading studio to our dining room (a long story), where we continue to work in front of our open fire, which you will see featured in our New Year greetings video.

2023 has been a challenging year across the world and the stream of interruptions we have experienced since our site was attacked in September 2022 is certainly put into perspective, when compared to the plight of others – for we can only ‘imagine’ the stresses and strains of those whose lives have been turned upside down throughout 2023.

We have much work to catch-up on in 2024 – not to mention many friends to catch-up with – so here’s hoping we can get off to a decent start this coming New Year, for there are lists upon lists of tutorials need filming, Fine Art projects to get off the ground and Elphen Chronicles stories and music in the making, due for release – all will be revealed as these come to fruition.

Meanwhile, keep safe and sound and thank you for your continued interest in our work and for reading this e-newsletter and watching our ‘wee’ New Year message.

With best wishes, from Eileen and myself,”
