Dutch elm disease was introduced into Canada around 1940. The fungus causes a vascular wilt that results in browning of the foliage and kills affected trees. Because their sap supply is cut off and fungal toxins poison them, the affected parts of the tree wilt and eventually die; this process can take a few days or a few years. The fungus develops in the sap-conducting tissues of elm trees, under the bark. The first symptoms of the disease generally appear between mid-June and mid-July. The leaves of affected branches wilt, curl up and dry out, while turning yellowish or brownish, but they usually remain on the tree. If the infection occurs later in the season, premature leaf drop usually follows the wilting. When an infected branch is cut, a ring-shaped brownish vascular discoloration can be seen. The exposed wood beneath the bark has numerous brown streaks. The disease is transmitted by bark beetles. These insects dig galleries beneath the bark of weakened trees where they can reproduce. Once spring arrives, the bark beetles, which have in the meantime become covered by spores from the causal fungus, migrate toward healthy trees and begin feeding. The beetles thus contaminate new hosts and spread the disease. A new, more aggressive disease, Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, has resulted from natural mutation of the former disease. This disease has spread from the American Midwest and replaced the disease introduced in the 1940s.

Ever seen the Elm Hill in black and white? Quite reasonable treatment, as this is the Woodland Cemetary, the largest cemetary in Scandinavia. I bet the dead roams the earth as the sun eventually sets.
ELMS has been hitting high spots, but this is the first one that was a great location AND great style. Keep it up!

I love this country road as it is delightful, in that, the country-side has lots to offer in beautiful scenery. Enjoyable either walking down, riding in a car, or biking down. This road has more curves and small hills than any other that I know of. There is a river that meanders along beside it and oft times you can see it through the stand of elms that travel along with the road. For miles, it seems until it meets up with a very old bridge that passes over the river. I love to stand here on the bridge and watch the birds and the water act out their magic, just for me. I love the sound of the rushing, bubbling water, it soothes my soul. Very beautiful and oh so peaceful.
As the Elmer tornado continued east of HWY283 it demonstrated multivortex patterns in the circulation along with violent motion. It was very lucky that this tornado primarily stayed over open country. Video can be found below
Now none of the leaves that surrounded the utility cover in yesterday's post likely would have come from this tree, as it is still pretty green showing only hints of Autumnal colouring. to be honest I am not sure what all causes the change in colour and the timing of it. Other American Elms growing right beside it are almost bare of leaves. What I do know is that this is a lovely tree.
Years ago I was fortunate enough to have a giant mature Elm tree on my property. Day after day throughout the seasons it was beautiful. I am quite envious of many of the older parts of Edmonton where thousands of Elm trees reside on boulevards.
Dutch Elm Disease has killed millions of American Elm trees in
N. America, and the City of Edmonton has put forth great effort to preserve its many Elms. Edmonton has one of the largest concentrations of uninfected Elms in the world.
The City has many strict laws regarding these trees and very large fines can be handed out to those who disregard those laws.
This tree looking very healthy has likely been pruned by knowledgeable City Staff a number of times.
This tree definitely needs to be seen in full view. What a beauty.
