Model elephants

Keep your eyes peeled for the unique models while they're around for public view, before they go under the hammer at a massive auction night.

Art installations

Elephant Family is the social enterprise and conservation group responsible for organising the Elephant Parade. London art lovers and fashion fans are bound to enjoy hunting the streets of London in search of the elephant decorated by their favourite artist or designer. Over 25 of the elephants are being housed at The Scoop on the South Bank.

Famous artists

Famous artists who have contributed work to the Elephant Parade London event include Marc Quinn, Emma Sergeant and Storm Thorgerson. Other artists who have donated designs and patterns include Arabella Sim, Jack Vettriano and Nilesh Mistry, who has decorated his model elephant using colourful Farrow & Ball paint.

Fashion designers

If you're a fashion fan, then keep an eye out for the elephants decorated by the likes of John Rocha, Julien MacDonald, Tommy Hilfiger and Lulu Guinness. Other celebrities with models in the Elephant Parade include Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Sir Terence Conran and footballer Graeme le Saux. There's also a Lion King inspired elephant designed by Sacha Jafri.

What's fun about missing you flight is that you completely change your plans, and suddenly appear somewhere, you were not supposed to be, and seeing things, you'd probably not see otherwise.

Because my flight from Atlanta to Paris was delayed, I had to shift to Atlanta-Amsterdam flight. And I had some 9 hour stay at the airport (when you don't have visa, you're imprisoned in the airports :)

And now I'm happy things went as they went! I wouldn't see this cute elephant and many more interesting things, hadn't I stopped in Amsterdam!

I knew I read about Elephant Parade somewhere, but couldn't remember what exactly it was about. Thankfully, we have Google and Wikipedia :)

{Elephant Parade is the world’s largest open-air exhibition dedicated to saving the Asian elephant from extinction. During a couple of months, hundreds of brightly coloured elephants swarm the streets of the city. Each elephant is a unique art object, painted by local and international artists. At the end of the exhibition the statues are auctioned by a renowned auction house, such as Christie’s or Sotheby’s. Part of the proceeds from the auction will be donated to The Asian Elephant Foundation, dedicated to selecting the project with the best profile in relation to saving the Asian elephant.

The first edition of Elephant Parade was held in Rotterdam, the second largest city of the Netherlands, in 2007. Antwerp followed in 2008. From 5th September through 31st October 2009, Elephant Parade visited Amsterdam, the capital and largest city of the Netherlands. In 2010, Elephant Parades were held in Emmen, in the North East of The Netherlands and London, the capital of Great Britain. In 2011, there will be Elephant Parades in Heerlen, a city in the very south of the Netherlands, from 25 March through 25 May, in Copenhagen from 1 June through 25 August, in Milan from 16 September through 15 November and in Singapore from 11 November through January 2012.

There are many artists involved with Elephant Parade. The elephants are painted by famous people, renowned artists, designers and young creative persons that make use of the project as a platform to reach the big audience.}

Based on the elephant statues of the Elephant Parade. It's body is cake with RKT head and legs built around an internal structure. I have been anticipating making this cake for the last few weeks with equal measures of excitement and dread. It did give me a few headaches (not least how to actually cover the thing!) but in the end didn't go too badly.

Be prepared for model elephants in London, as over 250 of the giant beasts invade the capital’s streets in a huge public art exhibition aiming to raise money for elephants throughout the world. The model elephants in London are part of the Elephant Parade, organised by the Elephant Family charity that have set up similar events throughout the world in an effort to raise awareness of the plight that faces many of our big-eared friends.

Decorated model elephants

Each of the model elephants in London will be the size of an adolescent elephant, and will be decorated by an artist or celebrity to make them look the part for the Elephant Parade itself. The 250 plus model elephants in London will then be auctioned off at Sotheby’s as the Elephant Family charity attempt to raise as much money as possible so that these beautiful and exotic creatures continue to stomp around the globe.

Elephant Parade

The model elephants will be found throughout London, in streets, parks, famous locations and tourist attractions, so you’ll probably bump into one of them on your travels. Art lovers can start their hunt for the elephants at The Scoop on the South Bank, where over 25 of the models are being displayed. Elephant Parade events have been a huge hit in other countries throughout the world but this is the first time that London will play host, bringing the importance of elephant conservation to the capital whilst also offering a fun way of making our immediate environment look a lot more attractive. One of the highlights of the event is bound to be the Lion King inspired elephant designed by Sacha Jafri.

ARTIST: Farhad Hussain

SPONSOR: ABN AMRO Private Banking

LOCATION: Singapore Art Museum

Description:Farhad bases his work on the realities of human relationships and their complexities with nature. He applies his trademark use of bright, vibrant colors and a huge smile on his subjects to convey an intentional act of concealment and deceit. He endows his narrative with a sense of satire mixed with pathos. To Farhad the Elephant is such an intelligent and majestic animal and is revered in many cultures. Yet, they have been extensively used as beasts of burden.

SPONSOR: Elephant Parade Asia

LOCATION: Singapore Art Museum

Description:In the past, elephants live peacefully in the wild. Today, with habitat loss and extensive areas of the forest exploited by humans, these gentle giants have nowhere to go. Can the destroyers of habitat (humans) be also the ones who help save it?

ARTIST: Ben Cabrera

SPONSOR: PSA International

LOCATION: Singapore Art Museum

Description:The idea of having people around the elephant is to show that humans are the ones destroying the lives and habitat of the elephant. We are one of the main reasons for elephant to be extinct due to competition for space. We have to learn how to live side by side with elephants and take care of Mother Nature.

About Elephant Parade

It is Elephant Parade's mission to be the world's largest financial support organization for the Asian elephant, threatened with extinction. The open air art exhibitions create worldwide attention, public awareness and support for the cause of elephant conservation: the elephant statues never go unnoticed by the wider public and mass media.

Elephant Parade’s concept is a unique combination of Art, Business and Charity. Art drives the value of the Elephant Parade: the life size elephant statues are exhibited in well-known cities and auctioned off at prestigious gala events. Smaller size hand painted limited edition replicas are sold in ‘Elephant Parade Gallery Stores’ and the web shop. The more superior the quality of the Art, the more successful the Business, the higher the amounts raised for Charity.

Elephant Parade is not a charity, but it is probably the most charitable enterprise in the world. Part of all proceeds from Elephant Parade auctions and retail benefits various projects and organizations, dedicated to the conservation of the Asian elephant. To date, this unique concept made it possible to contribute over 4 million Euros to this goal, and is put to good use in projects varying from elephant hospitals and corridors to lobbying governments and research.

Many Asian elephants have been saved and cured, but there are still thousands more that need our support

From September onwards, a hundred full size art elephants will swarm the streets of Amsterdam: together, they form a remarkable open-air exhibition, the Elephant Parade, that is dedicated to the Asian elephant. After the successful editions in Rotterdam and Antwerp, the exhibition in Amsterdam will be the largest so far.

The Elephant Parade is founded by father and son Mike and Marc Spits. With their project, they aim to raise attention for the Asian elephant, that is threatened with extinction. Their project has proven to be succesful: the first two editions of the Elephant Parade, held in Rotterdam and Antwerp, raised a total amount of over 700,000 euro. The benefits of the Elephant Parade are donated to the Elephant Family, the largest elephant charity in the world and was founded in 2002 by Mark Shand. He is a globetrotter, philantropist and writer and maker of the BBC documentary Queen of the Elephants.
