Young girls and their mother learn about the garden at their elementary school. Wonderland Elementary School, Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, California, USA

At Hillis Elementary we have wonderful gardens and an environment to engage our students during the school year and all summer long.

We’re excited about our gardening work, with our students and their families exploring the wonder of growing fruits and vegetables, as well as learning about nutrition, healthy eating and celebrating nature.

As spring planting turned to summer, our summer school students continue gardening with FoodCorps and AmeriCorps service members, with everyone working in the gardens.

We have also learned and tasted new recipes for snacks such as smoothies, salads, soups and learned many ways to use fresh produce.

It’s ultimately about empowerment for our students and setting the stage for a healthier future!

A 7-foot fence was erected around the playground and parking lot of Whittier Elementary School, 1900 W. 23rd St., after the CPS (most likely with the mayor's o.k.) tore down the fieldhouse beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday. The community had been given assurances the structure, used as a library and community center, would be retained.
