Japanese elementary students carry special backpacks called "landoseru," which is a borrowed word from the original dutch "ransel," which means backpack.

Traditional colors are red for girls and black for boys, although many schools no longer enforce the color requirements. School uniforms, so much a tradition in Japan, have been eliminated at some schools.

Title: Animals of Fossil Butte National Monument

Teacher: Mary Ure and Karla Haddock

Theme: Conservation

Materials: Printmaking with foam plates, painting, embroidery with embroidery floss, wet felting with wool, collage with mod podge.

Did you enjoy this project? Yes. It was enjoyable to learn about the monument and the animals.

About: We were really excited to learn about the animals that lived both now and in the past around Fossil Butte National Monument. We love prehistoric animals and enjoyed making prints of what their fossils might look like. We learned about the pronghorn antelope, the mule deer, the buffalo, the western meadowlark, the cut-throat trout and many other animals. We learned how to sew simple embroidery stiches to make grass at the base of the butte. We also learned how to wet felt and we added some to the antelope near the top.
