It's Dubai! Buy Buy Buy!
I didn't buy in Dubai. Well at least not in the airport, where this pic was taken. Lots of people go to Dubai to buy electronics. Makes no sense to me. If I were to want to buy cheap electronics I'd go to China but what do I know about it?
My lifelong quest to get electrocuted continues.
This is an electronics proof of concept for a table lamp that I want to make, it's called "North" and is brighter the closer it is pointing to north.
I was also, rather self-centeredly, thinking about making one that burns brighter the closer it is pointing to the place where I was born, a hospital in Stockholm, although the idea would be that a person would choose a place that means something to them personally, whatever it is.
I'll have to get a little GPS module chip and see if it could work.
Usability wise where the lamps needs to point doesn't really matter as all you would be looking for is to get the right level of light.
Once the socket bodies were finished, I transferred them to a baking dish. The final step before cooking was to press the nixie pins ever so slightly into the clay. The impressions left behind could, I figured, act as pilot holes for drilling.
The idea was that the holes would need to be somewhat larger than the tube pins, to accommodate the socket pins and leave a little bit of room for the socket pins to flex. Thus, the holes would need to be drilled out. I suppose they could be cut into the clay before baking, but I couldn't think of a good way to do that.
I got myself a nicer soldering iron as a prize for finishing my thesis. I had considered getting a new camera but I got one of those not so long ago and this cost about 1/8 what the next camera I want will cost - so keeping my starving student status in mind this was probably the wiser choice.
Non-geeks might like this because the yellowish square thing in the lower right is one of those flat, dried-out sponges that puff way up when you get them wet. Everybody likes that!
I tried it out a bit on the mainboard for my wife's nixie clock. It'll take some getting used to after using that low budget Radio Shack FireStarter™ all these years.
On edit: after a bit of practice, I find that this thing makes gorgeous little surface-mount joints. After a couple of false starts I put down a 20-pin gullwing SOIC with style, grace, and aplomb. Woo!

Strobist info:
One Elinchrom Quadra placed in the trunk with a Portalux Strip Box. So the light is basically comming from behind the camera.
The dust cover it came with doesn't fit right. May have something to do with the "Yamaha" logo on top.
Unlike the pins on the digital side of the board for some reason the pins on the analog/power side of the Arduino do not line up on a standard breadboard grid. It's kind of infuriating.
A little programmer carriage for an 8-pin ATTiny chip. It's basically just an ISP header and a DIP socket.
This amazing gadget contains a Medium wave AM receiver and a small FM transmitter. It was designed by the BBC for schools and colleges that had FM-only receivers, the schools programmes had moved from Radio 4 FM to Radio 5 which was on MW. Amazingly, rather than just sending an inexpensive MW radio to the schools, they got this beautifully engineered physical embodiment of the last gasps of BBC in-house electronic design.
