I purchased one of these in 1980 for £105. This amazing camera turned me on to photography!

The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) is a detector which specializes in tracking the thousands of particles produced by each ion collision at RHIC. Weighing 1,200 tons and as large as a house, STAR is a massive detector. It is used to search for signatures of the form of matter that RHIC was designed to create: the quark-gluon plasma. It is also used to investigate the behavior of matter at high energy densities by making measurements over a large area.

Some speakers from the TechShop junk shelves held together with zip ties. I should actually wire this up and put LEDs inside too! :)

This series of images will guide you through modifying an HS-311 servo to give continuous rotation in either direction, with a degree of speed control.

The modification is non-reversible, but these servos are cheap as chips so this shouldn't be a big worry.

Canon FTb with FD 28mm F3.5 and EOS-3 with PB-E1 and EF 85mm F1.8 USM.

I think that EOS-3 is too big and too heavy to shoot photos holding it by hands, especially when it comes with Power Booster.

Heathkit DX-100 CW/AM HF Transmitter 100 Watts. (1957)

A vintage Leeds & Northrup decade resistance box, model 4776. These were used as resistor substitutions in instrument calibration and as teaching tools in countless physics labs. Although the model 4776 was sold as a working instrument rather than a standard, its accuracy was within one part per thousand (as good as a standard). This item was a gift from a university. Despite research, I have not been able to find the exact date of production, although it was mentioned in a physics paper published in 1955, and was advertised at a price of $35 (works out to $374.82 in 2014!!!) in a 1948 publication.

Some old electric circuit board photographed against the light. Certain similarities to a city map, hmmm? AFAIK this TTL graveyard is either from a 1960s/1970s plotter or from a diskette drive unit.

I finally got a dedicated workspace for my electronics and ham radio projects instead of just doing them on my computer desk.

BBC Wales supplied the OB facilities for S4C at the recent Wales v. New Zealand rugby international - BBC Network produced and directed the match itself, with our scanner having a number of add-ons for S4C. Here's what the right-hand side of the director's mixer looked like.

From left to right, in green, cyber is a gizmo used in association with graphics: in black LSM, VT's X Y and Z are all slow motion machines, in blue background has a graphic on it; in green, Orad is used to put the scores and badges on the pitch; in black, Sportswriter puts the lines and circles on the picture when it's used for analysis, and the red buttons are only used if other feeds break down.

By pressing a button on the top row, that is put on air, the corresponding button immediately below it is used as a preview or standby.

Yay! My laser cut plastic from Ponoko arrived and like the best ikea flatpack it assembled together and all the parts actually fit!

It's six rectangles with slots in the top and bottom and ridges on the side, front and back walls. It doesn't hold itself together very well if you aren't careful, though a bit of glue would soon fix that. For now I'm leaving it as it is.

The main control PCB goes on the outside back, where you can easily access the buttons to change the time. Power supply is inside on one side wall, and the two nixie driver boards themselves are on the bottom. Amazingly, my laser cut holes line up with the holes in the PCBs and I am able to screw everything into place! Hurrah!
