Unfortunately, we don't have an electric car yet, so we occasionally have to fill up the car with gasoline. It's also a shame that you can't get to all photo locations by bus and train. But the next car will definitely be an electric car. Promised!

The regio (actually interregio) train 10422 from Gdynia Chylonia to Iława Główna serviced by EN71-42 stopped for a minute at Gdańsk Wrzeszcz on early sunday morning of October 31, 1999 (I suspect it was a winter time change that day). While a couple of passengers coime in (I was one of them on my short trip to Pruszcz Gdański), the man from goods office arrived with a battery cart, carrying a metal safe box with something to be delivered to this train and transported to the other station on the route of this train. This simple system of tiny cargo was very popular and the carts like this, manufactured by Fabryka Maszyn Leżajsk (FM Leżajsk) were like a constant element of platforms or stations in general.

To my surprise, FM Leżajsk still exists and still manufactures battery carts (see here), although this system of small cargo shipments is no longer maintained.

Pociąg osobowy 10422 z Gdyni Chyloni do Iławy Głównej w postaci EN71-42 z sekcji Gdynia Cisowa Zakładu Taboru w Gdyni zatrzymał się na stacji w Gdańsku Wrzeszczu we wczesny niedzielny poranek 31 października 1999 roku (chyba to był dzień zmiany czas na zimowy). Oprócz kilku pasażerów (a ja byłem jednym z nich), obsługa pociągu również przyjęła mały metalowy sejf, dowieziony tu przez obsługę kasy towarowej z pomocą wózka akumulatorowego. Ładunek został umieszczony (nie bez trudności z uwagi na masę) w przedziale służbowym i pojechał do jakiejś innej stacji na trasie pociągu, gdzie podobny wózek musiał podstawić się podf przedział "dla podróżnych z większym bagażem ręcznym".

Ten system drobnych przesyłek towarowych, zarówno wewnętrznych w ramach PKP, jak i komercyjnych, funkcjonował całkiem nieźle w czasach jednej wielkiej i niepodzielonej na spółki kolei, a wózki produkcji Fabryki Maszyn Leżajsk (FM Leżajsk) były nieodłącznym elementem krajobrazu stacji pasażerskich.

O dziwo, FM Leżajsk ma się dobrze i wciąż produkuje wózki, o nieco bardziej nowoczesnym wyglądzie - możecie to sprawdzić tutaj. Przesyłki nie dotrwały do dzisiaj w takiej formule, chociaż nie można powiedzieć, że ich nie ma - możemy skorzystać choćby z przesyłek konduktorskich w PKP Intercity.

Volkswagen's electric vehicle ID.3 in psychodelic camouflage displayed at Autostadt Wolfsburg

This is the Gläserne Manufaktur or Glass Factory a.k.a. Transparent Factory if you translate it in English. It’s a state-of-the-art Volkswagen car factory in the German city of Dresden. It is situated just outside the historic city center next to the Großer Garten.

 

The Gläserne Manufaktur was designed by architect Gunther Henn. It came ‘online’ for production in 2002. The factory consists largely of glass, including the façade and inner walls. Therefore a fair bit of the production process can be seen from the outside. At the factory Volkswagen produced its top model, the Phaeton, from 2002 to 2016. The Volkswagen XL1 – a limited diesel-powered plug-in hybrid – was also produced here. After the production of the Phaeton was shutdown, the factory was completely converted in 2017 for E-Golf production.

Since the production changeover, the factory was re-developed into a Center of Future Mobility. Customers and visitors can experience the production of the E-Golf live and learn more about the future of mobility in an interactive world of experience for electromobility and digitization. This also includes free test drives through Dresden in electric vehicles. Furthermore, all electric vehicles of the Volkswagen brand are delivered to customers in the Gläserne Manufaktur.

Because of the more and more high(er) demand, production has been split into a two-shift operation since 2018, producing 72 E-Golfs per day. Since Autumn 2020, the E-Golf production is replaced by the ID.3; the first Volkswagen designed purely as an electric car.

 

All heavy and noisy operations, such as stamping, welding and painting of the steel body, takes place in Zwickau. The painted chassis, car bodies and parts arrive at the factory on trucks. The other 1,200 parts and 34 pre-assembled components are transported from Zwickau by freight trams running on the Dresden public transport track, eliminating the need for (more) polluting trucks to enter the city.

 

Technical stuff

This panorama was inspired by the black-and-white fine art photos I made earlier this year. I planted my camera in the outer corner of the walkway surrounding the Gläserne Manufaktur. Also matching it with the direction of the clouds.

Next, I took 10 overlapping shots in one row and series. Maintaining an overlap of 40% due to the rugged contours and constructive lines of the factory and surrounding area. Luckily, the clouds in the sky moved at a rather slow pace, so I could pan the camera in accordance with them and keep an even pattern in the sky.

The initial pano merge was done with Photoshop CC. This resulted in a wallpaper size canvas of roughly 1,2 GB. I cropped it to 13134 x 6002 pixels.

Further post-production was done in a mixture of Lightroom and Photoshop. It included a conversion to black-and-white, balancing the lighting conditions, underlining the dynamic sky a little more, adding a bit more contrast and tuned the curves. Finally I added some small copyright signs. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

Rennes, France 🇫🇷 : Charging break for this Bluebus at the terminus of line 12, Poterie, also terminus of the metro. Charging pole works and is effective (1% per minute) but it is not necessary based on buses services.

Dresden is developing into one of Germany’s leading connected cities. One major aim of the capital of the state of Saxony is to make traffic cleaner, quieter, more convenient, and safer. Volkswagen Sachsen and municipal agencies are working to achieve this aim. Dresden aims to become a model city for electromobility, digitalization, and innovative fleet management. And Volkswagen’s Gläserne Manufaktur (transparant factory) is playing a key role as a “Center of Future Mobility”.

 

Together with the economic development office of the capital of Saxony, Volkswagen is supporting young start-ups in the future-oriented fields of fleet management, car sharing, concierge services, navigation/park services, and smart home services.

 

The Gläserne Manufaktur is more than an exhibition space and a place to explore future approaches to mobility. Its premises are providing ever more actual mobility services that make it simpler and more sustainable to get around in Dresden.

 

And aside from all this, the place is very photogenic ;-)

Milan, Italy : After a few rounds on line 45, this electric fourth generation Urbino gives its turn to a CityClass in order to get back to the depot and recharge its batteries.

Mannheim, Germany 🇩🇪 : We may agree that eCitaro is an electric bus born under a shiny star. Mercedes-Benz is starting to deliver the first buses and testing is well underway at the Driving Experience next to the factory.

Brussels, Belgium 🇧🇪 : Last sunrays of the day on STIB Haren depot. The first Urbino 18 IV Elec quietly wait for their peers under the slow charge brackets.

Hamburg : Pause rechargement pour cet Urbino 12 IV Elec au terminus Adenauerallee de la ligne 109. La recharge ne fonctionne pas systématiquement mais elle est efficace (20% en 6 minutes). Sachant qu'un véhicule standard utilise 10 à 15% par trajet, un dysfonctionnement ponctuel de la potence n'est pas gênant. (26.04.2019)

Charging pole works with some errors and is pretty efficient (20% in 6 minutes). Knowing that a standard vehicle uses 10 to 15% per way, a minor defect of charging pole isn't inconvenient.

Once an ancient mule track, dangerous and arduous, today it is a fun pass for motorized contemporaries, and while in the past people used to drag themselves up with horse-drawn carts, today they struggle up to almost 2800 meters by bike.

 

My favorite vehicle on the Stelvio Pass is the electric Zero SR/F - quiet, inconspicuous, but powerful and fast.

The 2035 ban on the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines is often criticized as a misguided decision. A central argument is the lack of technological openness. Critics of the ban point out that the exclusive focus on electromobility ignores other promising alternatives such as synthetic fuels (e-fuels) or hydrogen technologies. For example, e-fuels could represent a climate-friendly solution for existing vehicles, thereby having a much greater impact than the sole transition to electric cars. Furthermore, the production of e-fuels is generally carbon-neutral, as carbon dioxide is extracted from the atmosphere during their production. A technology-agnostic approach would enable engineers and the industry to develop the most efficient and sustainable solutions instead of being limited to a single, politically mandated option.

 

Another crucial point of criticism is the dependency on global supply chains and scarce resources. The production of batteries for electric vehicles requires a large amount of critical raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. These raw materials are often mined under environmentally damaging and ethically questionable conditions, and the supply chains are dominated by a few countries. A one-sided focus on electromobility could therefore lead to new geopolitical dependencies and bottlenecks. In addition, the energy supply for widespread e-mobility is not yet sufficiently secured in many countries. A too-rapid transition could overload the power grid and lead to a greater need for electricity from fossil fuels, which would undermine the desired climate goals.

 

The German head of Mercedes, Ola Källenius, has also been critical of the rigid focus on the combustion engine ban. He advocates for a reassessment of the decision to strengthen technological openness again. Källenius emphasizes that the internal combustion engine could be operated in a climate-neutral way through the use of synthetic fuels and would thus represent an attractive alternative to pure e-mobility. He argues that a technology-agnostic policy would enable manufacturers to develop innovative solutions and find the best ways to decarbonize transport. From his perspective, the combustion engine ban is an unnecessary restriction that weakens the innovative power of the European automotive industry and jeopardizes its competitiveness against other markets. He suggests that politicians should re-evaluate the situation to ensure that the best and most efficient technologies for reducing CO2 emissions are used.
