In terms of conservation, threats to red kites have been via direct poisoning and indirect poisoning from pesticides resulting in almost extinction in the 1900's.. Woodland clearance and other changes in agricultural practices created a reduction in food resources. Other threats included electrocution, hunting and trapping and egg-collection. This persecution resulted in a rapidly declining population with extinction happening in Ireland. In 2006, the first Red Kite was seen in London after 150 years and they are now protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. Whilst numbers have increased, they remain on the amber list.

The number of Southern Ground-Hornbills outside formally protected areas in South Africa is declining due to loss and transformation of habitat, poisoning, persecution and electrocution. The species is listed as globally Vulnerable and have been uplisted to Endangered in 2014 in South Africa.
It is the largest hornbill species in the world.

Young Black Vulture with gps device in the Spanish Pyrenees.
European black vultures (Aegypius monachus) and griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) are considered as umbrella species whose conservation will also substantially benefit other raptor species sharing the main diet of carrion as well as breeding and foraging habitats. These species are also an indicator of healthy, intact, natural habitats. The conservation status of all species of European vultures, however, is vulnerable as a result of poisoning, limited food availability, collisions (wind farms and power lines) and electrocution (electricity pylons). Moreover, most breeding populations are isolated and most species have low reproduction rates. It is difficult to ensure the long-term survival of these species in Europe.
Only around 2 125 breeding pairs of black vultures remain in four EU countries (France, Germany, Portugal and Spain). Around 97% are found in Spain.
The Griffon Vulture is a large raptor, inhabitant of the steep cliffs and rocky areas offering numerous cavities where it will nest.
The main cause of the rapid decline in the griffon vulture population is the consumption of poisoned baits set out by people. Wildlife conservation efforts have attempted to increase awareness of the lethal consequences of using illegally poisoned baits through education about the issue. It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development and electrocution has been identified as a threat.
The flight of the Griffon Vulture is a real show of virtuosity. It soars during long moments, moving scarcely the wings, in an almost unperceivable and measured way.

Wikipedia: The elephant has been a contributor to Thai society and its icon for many centuries. The elephant has had a considerable impact on Thai culture. The Thai elephant (Thai: ช้างไทย, chang Thai) is the official national animal of Thailand. The elephant found in Thailand is the Indian elephant (Elephas maximus indicus), a subspecies of the Asian elephant. In the early-1900s there were an estimated 100,000 captive elephants in Thailand. In mid-2007 there were an estimated 3,456 captive elephants left in Thailand and roughly a thousand wild elephants. By 2017 the number of captive elephants had risen to an estimated 3,783. The elephant became an endangered species in Thailand in 1986.
Human-elephant conflicts seem to have escalated since about 2000. Between 2012 and 2018 there were 107 elephant or human casualties—death or injury—due to increased confrontation. At least 25 wild elephants died during this six-year period, most from electrocution by live wires strung by farmers to keep elephants from their crops. Over the same period, 45 humans have been killed by wild elephants.

A smaller vulture that is easily displaced from carcasses by the larger vultures. This species has also been given an IUCN status of critically endangered based on recent rapid population declines. Poisoning, the medicinal trade, hunting, electrocution (collisions with electricity infrastructure), and habitat loss are negatively impacting this species.
It was interesting to see how birds for some reason know which wire to land on and not get electrocuted. When a bird is perched on a single wire, its two feet are at the same electrical potential, so the electrons in the wires have no motivation to travel through the bird's body. No moving electrons means no electric current. Our Mockingbird is safe, for the moment anyway.

Father’s car is a Jaguar,
And Pa drives rather fast.
Castles, farms and draughty barns,
We go charging past.
Arthur’s cart is far less smart
And can’t go half as far.
But I’d rather ride in Arthur’s cart
Than in my Papa’s fast car.
- Learned from our secondary school 'electrocution' teacher Ms Bridget Keenan, who valiantly tried to improve our pronunciation (or was it enunciation?) - a thankless task!
Taken a long time ago... on a sim that's still out there, somewhere
Note: It's not still out there - it was taken at the far end of the old Feast sim!
Thank you to the lovely Skye Donardson for refreshing my terrible memory.
I don't think she can read, but other than being a bit wet from the rain she looked healthy and not suffering from electrocution! lol!!

In Africa Southern Ground-hornbills are classified as ‘vulnerable’ by the IUCN, however, in South Africa they are classified as ‘endangered’ and on the Red List of Threatened Species as only about 1500 individuals still live within the country. Loss of habitat, loss of nesting trees, electrocution from transformer boxes and even, in some cases, killed for use in traditional medicine, have all contributed to the rapid decline of these majestic birds.
Hooded vultures taken in Masai Mara, Kenya. International Vulture Awareness Day, 3rd September 2022.
It is suspected that this species is currently undergoing an extremely rapid population reduction owing to indiscriminate poisoning, trade for traditional medicine, hunting for food, persecution and electrocution, as well as habitat loss and degradation.
Wildlife poachers sometimes poison vultures because their presence in the skies near animal corpses can alert rangers to their illegal activities.
Because many species of vultures are social, vultures are highly affected by poisoning.
Over a hundred birds can be killed at just one poisoned carcass.
Vultures are the ultimate recyclers. They can strip a carcass in just a few hours.
They keep our environment clean and disease-free.

Pikachu is my absolute favourite Pokemon character. He has a spirit, fierce and bold despite his small size and whenever he shows his emotions it touches me.
This time he decided to hide in the corner with the fierce look of his. I better watch out, don´t want to be electrocuted.
Couldn’t resist the bad puns. Shocking i know.
Big thanks to Tasha for agreeing, albeit a little too quickly, to throw the switch and electrocute me.

I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
Population keeps on breeding
Nation bleeding, still more feeding economy
Life is funny, skies are sunny
Bees make honey, who needs money, Monopoly
I'd love to change the world
But I don't know what to do
So I'll leave it up to you
World pollution, there's no solution

Just black and white, rich or poor
Them and us, stop the war

Taken in Hwange NP. Zimbabwe.
The most widespread and common vulture in Africa like many African vultures, has suffered a rapid decline, and are now endangered.
A major cause of population decrease is the loss of habitat and anthropogenic disturbance. Fires have also caused the destruction of trees used for nesting habitat. Humans also have a large impact. Power lines have caused many vultures to be electrocuted. In Kenya especially, humans are using a toxic pesticide called Furadan, which has led to many vulture deaths. Vultures are also being poisoned by humans, although not intentionally. In order to kill hyenas, lions, and other predators, herders add poisons into their livestock. Vultures ingest the poison upon eating a deceased animal's carcass. This poisoning generally occurs outside of protected areas but is a leading factor in the population's decline.

TAEYANG - 'VIBE (feat. Jimin of BTS)'
I can’t express it in words
You gotta know you got that vibe
Your smile is Fine Art
You wake up my soul
You got me feelin’ so right
It’s a vibe
This gon’ be the one and only theme song
You’ve got all of my attention
You’re my one and only mission
Nothing is impossible Baby lights camera action
I’m the music, you’re my Topline
You’re the city, I’m the Skyline
I’m the movie, you’re the Highlight
Falling on a dark sky like Twilight
Just gets better
Got me binge-watching you with that attraction
You don’t know I want your love (know I want your love)
Before this night ends Baby
This gon’ be the one and only Anthem
Can feel my sixth sense, it’s a stimulation
Holding hands causing an electrocution
Before you my world was in disconnection
I’m the stage, you’re the Spotlight
You’re the Han River, I’m the Nam San
It can’t be more perfect than this
Falling on a dark sky like Twilight
I could feel it
I’m trapped inside your space, You’re my Matrix
You don’t know I want your love (know I want your love)
Before this night ends Baby
Look at the stars
Moon’s shining so bright
All through the night
It’s lighting us up
And the way you look at me
I want to keep feelin’ the vibrations
(You gotta know you got that vibe)
You know we got that vibe baby (till the sun rises)
Look at me, look at me, I got the vibe
I can feel it, It’s a vibe
Plastic insulated screwdriver shanks are an electrician's friend. Less risk for shocks and electrocutions when you use these tools around electrical equipment. Always disable and lockout electrical equipment regardless of how well your tools are made for the job.
This one posted for the Macro Mondays 7/21/25 theme: Plastic
This must be an old cement or cinder block sub-station for the power company, judging from all the power lines and wires. It appears to be deserted now, which is good because flooding and electricity don’t mix.
I must say the Ospreys didn’t care if the power lines were live or not. I have never seen ‘one’ electrocuted bird lying under a power line. Apparently they know not to touch both lines at once.

William Faulkner: James Joyce was one of the—the great men of my time. He was electrocuted by the divine fire. He, Thomas Mann were the—the great writers of my time. He was probably—might have been the greatest, but he was electrocuted. He had more talent than he could control.

(Trajan adjusts stance as he's throttling Caly, steps on damaged stunner, which gives a small shock to his foot. He loses his grip, Caly falls to the ground, delivering a solid uppercut to his groin then she dashes through the trees, in the direction Laithi took. Cut to street. Caly dashes to catch up with Sienna, Mateo and Lucas. Lucas is on the pavement, Mateo and Sienna are trying to punch or kick Laithi and the two men when they come close.)
Mateo: Back off!
Caly: Laithi!
(The alien looks over at Caly, and Caly hurls herself into the two men, knocking them backward. Mateo and Sienna rush to help Caly fight the two men. There's a loud snap as the man Caly's fighting has his neck broken and she pushes him aside.)
Caly: Don't touch him or you'll be infected! (warns the humans)
(Cut to Mateo and Sienna being flung aside by the second man, who stands. Cut to Caly retrieving electronic device second man dropped when she knocked him down. He approaches her from behind, throwing a punch.)
Mateo: Caly!
(Caly spins at the last moment, holding up the device, the second man punches through the casing and is electrocuted, collapsing to the pavement, golden light pouring from his irises, to the concrete.)
Caly: Stay away from him. If the light touches you, he'll seize control of your body. (cautions Mateo and Sienna)
(Cut to the golden light evaporating. Cut to Caly, Mateo, and Sienna.)
Caly: It's safe now. He's just a dead man.
Mateo: And that makes me not okay.
Sienna: Wait, where's Lucas?
Mateo: And that woman!
Caly: She must have taken him.
Sienna: By herself?
Caly: My kind can be powerful. (looking around, seeing no sign of Laithi)
Mateo: We have to find them! We have to save Lucas!
Caly: I'm sorry. I don't know which way they went. (she retrieves the electronic device) We have to go, in case they send reinforcements.
(The trio retreats into a dark alley. Cut to woman jogging down sidewalk, she sees the bodies and screams.)
Opening credits roll. Razer's theme plays.

Best night of my life before i discovered drugs. Me and urge spent all night in the Barking yards doing this. As per usual I was as drunk as a sack and had recently discovered that touching 1 live rail didn't electrocute you.
I decided to show him my new found discovery in a train yard and touched the rail with my hand with the train making the arc between middle and outside rails. There was a huge thwump! noise, my hand was flung away from the line. I'm right handed an for about 1 hour I couldn't use my right hand to shake a can, let alone spray with it. :)

The golden eagles use those utility poles to survey the pinto bean fields of San Juan County in Utah for food. Occasionally, they get electrocuted on those wires. This beauty was on the utility pole when I spotted him. I slammed on the brakes (not a good idea in a Jeep), threw open the door and jumped out. The noise I made bothered him and he flew away leaving me to photo his backside with my point and shoot. If only I'd owned the D700 at the time you'd have had a better view of that rear! In any case, I probably saved his life! :))D

Another image from the powerful storm we had a couple of weeks ago. Again taken from the safety of indoors from my laundry window!
I say safety, but apparently, in the same storm, someone in South Australia did get electrocuted inside their home when they flipped a light switch right at the moment of a lightning flash!
The brown tinge of smoke can be seen lower right where a local grassfire had been started by a strike. I believe there were as many as 40 to 50 grassfires in the south of our state that night.
Griffon vultures have been used as model organisms for the study of soaring and thermoregulation. The energy costs of level flight tend to be high, prompting alternatives to flapping in larger birds. Vultures in particular utilize more efficient flying methods such as soaring. Compared to other birds, which elevate their metabolic rate to upwards of 16 times their basal metabolic rate in flight, soaring griffon vultures expend about 1.43 times their basal metabolic rate in flight. Griffon vultures are also efficient flyers in their ability to return to a resting heart rate after flight within ten minutes.
As large scavengers, griffon vultures have not been observed to seek shelter for thermoregulation. Vultures use their bald heads as a means to thermoregulate in both extreme cold and hot temperatures. Changes in posture can increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%. This change allows for the more than doubling of convective heat loss in still air. Griffon vultures have also been found to tolerate increased body temperatures as a response to high ambient temperatures. By allowing their internal body temperature to change independently of their metabolic rate, griffon vultures minimize their loss of water and energy in thermoregulating. One study in particular (Bahat 1995) found that these adaptations have allowed the Griffon vulture to have one of the widest thermal neutral zones of any bird.
It declined markedly throughout the 19th–20th centuries in much of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, mainly due to direct persecution and "bycatch" from the poisoned carcasses set for livestock predators (Snow and Perrins 1998, Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). In some areas a reduction in available food supplies, arising from changes in livestock management practices, also had an impact (Ferguson-Lees and Christie 2001, Orta et al. 2015). It is very highly vulnerable to the effects of potential wind energy development (Strix 2012) and electrocution has been identified as a threat (Global Raptors Information Network 2015). Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) used for veterinary purposes pose a threat to this species. One case of suspected poisoning caused by flunixin, an NSAID, was recorded in this species in 2012 in Spain (Zorrilla et al. 2015). Diclofenac, a similar NSAID, has caused severe declines in Gyps vulture species across Asia.
