The Volkswagen Microbus is back with futuristic intentions in the form of an all-electric three-row van dubbed the ID. Buzz. Featuring DNA dating back to 1950, the current rendition is longer, battery-powered, and energetically fun to drive. To reimagine the Microbus, also known as a Bus, Camper, Samba, Splittie, Campervan, or Bulli, VW leaned on design cues from the original platform and took input from devout owners.
I joined the fanfare in San Francisco for the national press drive of the 2025 VW ID. Buzz and was delighted by the melting pot of vibrant colors and configurations as we took over iconic Lombard Street and caravanned to Golden Gate Fort Point and Stinson Beach.
The 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz will hit the market before the end of the year with MSRPs of $59,995 (Pro S), $63,495 (Pro S Plus), and $65,495 for the 1st Edition.

One of the growing number of diminutive 'Goupil G3' electric vans that can be seen trundling around Leeds City Centre. This one is operated by Mailbox Express, but the local council also use them as refuse vehicles for places with restricted access. Harrods’ fleet of electric delivery vehicles were once a familiar sight on the streets of London. The famous department store started using American-built Walker electric vans in 1919. During the 1930s Harrods renewed the fleet, undertaking the design and construction in its own workshops. Work started in 1933 and a prototype van was running by 1935. A total of sixty vans were built up to 1939. The 1 ton vans were powered by under-floor mounted batteries giving a range of sixty miles per charge. This van remained in service until 1970 when it was presented to the Museum.
Battery-powered electric vehicles have been in use since the very earliest days of motoring. Being silent and pollution-free they are ideally suited to use as delivery vehicles in urban areas, where short distances mean their lack of battery range is less of a problem.

From the official handbook to the Exhibition of Civic Services that was held at the Exhibition Halls, Deansgate, in Manchester during May 1938 and that formed part of the celebrations of the centenary of the incorporation and formation of the first council. This followed the change in the law in 1835 that enabled the rapidly growing industrial towns to achieve a method of effective self-goverance. Such was Manchester's growth that by 1853 it was raised to the status of a City.
The booklet describes the many services that a City and County Borough council such as Manchester's provided - from services such as education and health to trading services that included gas, electricity, transport and water before nationalisation removed many of these enterprises later in the century. Each department and service had a stand at exhibition as described in the book and several issued adverts to promote themselves.
These pages describe the city's municipal electricity department, one of the largest in the UK and shows the one of the department's three generating stations, the 'out of town' Barton site adjacent to the Manchester Ship Canal. The delivery van is also of interest as it is 'electrically driven' - "claimed to be the most up to date form of transport" and well ahead of today's clamour for electric propulsion!

This vehicle is a Smiths electric van, restored some time ago by the Beamish Tramway Group but little seen about the Museum. It has recently found more favour and became popular with the Gallopers team for moving organ music and other bits and pieces.
Just one of the many exhibits that is planned to be at the 2011 Great North Steam Fair which runs from the 14th-17th April. Visit the Beamish Transport Blog for all the latest.
Please note that due to circumstances beyond our control the exhibits you may see on the day of the event are subject to change without prior notice.
