This was our class motto when I graduated from 8th grade. Is knowledge power? I don't know anymore. UPDATE: I posted this the night of the election; now a week out, yes I believe knowledge is power. The voters did the right thing in most states. Gerrymandering is now the problem, but hopefully we will get that taken care of too.
Don’t hate me…
But I hate politics. I hate talking about it, I hate listening to people talk about it and most of all I hate the division and strife it seems to cause between perfectly rational people But since so many people asked I thought I would show my support for my candidate in this election…
Now that that’s out of the way, I wanted to say that I couldn’t be more proud of my country today. Considering that just a few short years ago our country was divided over whether or not blacks and whites should be allowed to go to the same schools, drink out of the same water fountains or even sit in the same seats on the bus. And yet yesterday we elected a black president in what was pretty much a land slide victory. Although he wasn’t my candidate, I do believe his being elected was a positive thing and I’m glad to be a witness to it. I know Mr Obama was a beacon of hope to a lot of people and I pray that if nothing else that hope brings some healing to this country and to the entire world. I’m tired of being surrounded by worry and depression.
(PS – “None of the above” does not mean I voted for Nader!)

Wish you a great weekend!
Chinese New Year is coming and I wish all my Flickr friends a happy and prosperous Year of Monkey!
There are so many arguments and discussions about democracy and election of Chief Executive in Hong Kong ever since Occupy Central movement came into sight.
Some argued that there has been no election of governor in the colonial rule in Hong Kong before 1997. The election now suggested by China is a step forward already. The question is: Is the voting on screened candidates a real democracy?
I believe if Hong Kong were under British rule today and similar kind of election framework being proposed, the Hong Kong people will still protest on it and will not accept it too.
We need a real step forward and not a step backward like what was happening in the colonial rule i.e. the leader in government was appointed and sent by another ruling authority.
This is not moving forward or backward in my picture. This is just Woodward's spiral stairs 4 October seen on the day of Doors Open Vancouver event.
Happy Sunday!
I have my best wishes for Occupy Central movement on the 7th day.
This is a great photo - well for you it’s not but I was standing just below the Pagoda on Kinder Scout looking towards Swines Back and checked the time on my phone. As I activated my phone a BBC news flash reported that Donald Trump had fallen behind in the Pennsylvania count. Despite being on my own I cried out yessssss! Pumped my fist and did a jog. Surely Trump cannot Win the election now. The world will hopefully be a better place not perfect but better. Bad luck to the republicans I am sure that the majority are decent people. The US can hopefully become a country we respect its status has fallen in the world over the last four years. Anyway this is where I was when we got to the beginning of the end in this election. That’s why this is a brilliant photo - At the suggestion of James Grant Photography I have named this photo "Back of the Swine"
The 'eccentric' political campaigner out on his bike, possibly in the Clapham* area before the 1970 general election.

It’s the first day of Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar and our story brings us to a remote planet in the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim.
On the scorched sands stands a Starship. A Starship whose sight is met with awe for it harbingers the arrival of one of the Galaxy’s most famous Bounty Hunters.
He always gets his job done, even if it means traveling to this forsaken collection of sand some calls planet.
The Christmas holidays are about to start and like every year it is going to be a busy month.
However this year the Galaxy is in turmoil, even more than before.
Everyone talks about a certain guy wearing a blond fox hairpiece; someone who won a reality show or perhaps it was an election of some sort.
Some says he is the “Blondie Grinch” sent to destroy the Holidays; others say he is the “Blondie Santa Claus” who will bring gifts to everyone.
Our Bounty Hunter doesn’t care too much about this. He has work to do: collecting bounties on the heads of gift thieves, protecting gifts deliveries and so on.
He has no time of guy wearing a blond fox hairpiece who won a reality show. Or was it some sort of election?
Now it’s time to collect the next bounty…
I haven't been very active recently but now I'm back with this year Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar.
I hope you like this photo :)
May the Brick be with You :)
Two days after the people of the United States voted for their new President, the nation continues to be at war with itself. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote based on taking the metropolitan areas like California and New York- places packed with people. If, however, you look at the map of the states that were predominantly in favor of Donald Trump, you see a nation that almost completely leaned in the direction of a more conservative candidate. Hillary convinced the most people in those urban areas- who generally DO vote Democratic- but almost every state went to Trump. In the end, the way our nation works, it is the electoral college, and how many votes each state is attributed, that decides who wins. Even though she won huge states like California, with 55 electoral votes, almost all the smaller counts went to Trump. People who live on a farm matter as much in the United States as people who live in a high rise. Our system guarantees that the urban areas won't always be able to nudge out the small guys in the grand scheme of things. Never has the electoral college shown itself to be more powerful than it did in this election.
Now, America is a country of protests and cursing, mixed with joy and relief. I wouldn't want to be Donald Trump right now for anything! It will take someone with the kind of stamina and nerve that he has had in his high power business dealings all these years just to survive it, and to try to get Americans simmered down enough to work with him towards a better future. We have just a couple of months before he is sworn into office, and hopefully, the holidays will make everyone less hostile. Meanwhile, Old Glory, as we affectionately refer to our flag, still flies over a divided nation.

Italian actress and photojournalist Gina Lollobrigida (1927), was one of Europe’s most prominent film stars of the 1950’s. ‘La Lollo’ was the first European sex symbol of the post war years and she paved the way into Hollywood for her younger colleagues Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale.
At the age of 3 Luigina was already selected as the most beautiful toddler of Italy and in her youth she started to model. She became an art student and made her film debut in an uncredited bit role in Lucia di Lammermoor (1946, Piero Ballerini). In 1947, she entered the Miss Italia pageant and came in third. The contest was won by Lucia Bosé and second was Gianna Maria Canale - both became also film actresses, though not nearly as successful as Lollobrigida. That same year Gina was discovered by director Mario Costa who gave her a small part in L’elisir d’amore (1946, Mario Costa) A bigger part followed in the opera film Pagliacci (1948, Mario Costa), in which her singing was dubbed. She also started to model as Gina Loris for the foto romanzi, the popular Italian photo novels. Her first major success as a star was in Miss Italia (1950, Duilio Coletti), a backstage drama set at a beauty contest. It was followed by the delightful comedy Vita da cani (1950, Mario Monicelli, Steno) and the award winning crime drama La città si difende (1951, Pietro Germi), based on a script by Federico Fellini. In France she co-starred with Gérard Philipe in the swashbuckling comedy Fanfan la Tulipe (1952, Christian Jacque) and the charming fantasy Les Belles de Nuit (1952, René Clair). Her first American film was Beat the Devil (1953, John Huston). She was at her best as Humphrey Bogart's wife in this odd but endearing noiresque comedy. She returned to Italy and had her definitive breakthrough with the huge global hit Pane, amore e fantasia (1953, Luigi Comencini), in which she starred with Vittorio de Sica. This romantic comedy was nominated for an Oscar and led to three sequels, including Pane, amore e gelosia (1954, Luigi Comencini). Next she earned her nickname ‘The World's Most Beautiful Woman’ for her signature film La donna più bella del mondo (1956, Robert Z. Leonard).
Gina Lollobrigida made another Hollywood appearance in the circus melodrama Trapeze (1956, Carol Reed) with Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis. Next she starred as Esmeralda with Anthony Quinn as Quasimodo in Notre Dame de Paris (1956, Jean Delannoy). In 1959 she lured Yul Brynner in the Biblical epic Solomon and Sheba (1959, King Vidor). One of her most popular Hollywood films was Come September (1961, Robert Mulligan), in which she played the never-contented mistress of Rock Hudson. For this lightweight comedy she won the Golden Globe as World Film Favorite. She co-starred again with Hudson in Strange Bedfellows (1965, Melvin Frank) and in 1968 she starred in the enjoyable screwball comedy Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell (1968, Melvin Frank), for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. On tv she was seen in the mini series Le Avventure di Pinocchio (1972, Luigi Comencini). She retired from acting in the mid-1970’s, but has occasionally returned for the camera, as in the soap opera Falcon Crest (1984). She has used her celebrity to sell cosmetics, published two books of her photography, Italia Mia (1973) and Wonder of Innocence (1994), and created sculptures. In the mid-1970’s she wrote, directed and produced Ritratto di Fidel, a documentary about Fidel Castro that included a rare interview with the Cuban dictator, fueling persistent rumors that a romance was sparked. In 1986, she was the head of jury at the Berlin International Film Festival, and in 1999 she ran for a seat in the European Union Parliament, stressing humanitarian issues, but lost the election. Now virtually retired, Lollobrigida has not made a film appearance since XXL (1997, Ariel Zeitoun).

Luigina Lollobrigida was born in the picturesque Italian mountain village Subiaco in 1927, as one of four daughters of a furniture manufacturer. At the age of 3, Luigina was already selected as the most beautiful toddler of Italy and in her youth, she started to model. She became an art student and made her film debut with an uncredited bit role in the adventure film Aquila nera/The Black Eagle Returns (Riccardo Freda, 1946) starring Rossano Brazzi. In 1947, she entered the Miss Italia pageant and came in third. The contest was won by Lucia Bosé and the second was Gianna Maria Canale. Both also became film actresses, though not nearly as successful as Lollobrigida. Gina Lollobrigida was discovered by director Mario Costa who gave her a small part as a girlfriend of Adina (Nelly Corradi) in the opera adaptation L’elisir d’amore/Elixir of Love (Mario Costa, 1946). Lollobrigida started to model as Diana Loris for the Fotoromanzi, the popular Italian photo novels. She got her first bigger film part in another opera film, Pagliacci/Love of a Clown - Pagliacci (Mario Costa, 1948), co-starring with one of the greatest Italian baritones, Tito Gobbi. The film, based on Ruggero Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci recounts the tragedy of Canio (Afro Poli), the lead clown (or pagliaccio in Italian) in a Commedia dell'arte troupe, his wife Nedda (Lollobrigida), and her lover, Silvio (Gobbi). When Nedda spurns the advances of Tonio (also Gobbi), another player in the troupe, he tells Canio about Nedda's betrayal. In a jealous rage, Canio murders both Nedda and Silvio. Lollobrigida's singing in this film was dubbed.
Gina Lollobtrigida's first major success as a leading lady was in Miss Italia/My Beautiful Daughter (Duilio Coletti, 1950), a backstage drama set at a beauty contest. James Travers at Films de France: "As French matinee idol Gérard Philipe is propelled through history and cardboard Freudian dreamscapes, into the arms of such beauties as Martine Carol and Gina Lollobrigida, (director René) Clair appears to have all but lost his tenuous grip on reality (the scene with the dinosaur confirms it) - but who cares? This is a film which, like Clair’s earlier comic masterpieces, is intended to distract and entertain, and it does that marvelously and unashamedly." Gina Lollobrigida had her definitive breakthrough with the huge global hit Pane, amore e fantasia/Bread, Love and Dreams (Luigi Comencini, 1953), in which she starred with Vittorio De Sica. Her earthy looks and short 'tossed salad' hairdo were quite influential, and in fact, there's a type of curly lettuce named 'Lollo' in honour of her cute hairdo. I'm sure you're all bored with the election now?! So why not pick up a copy of Amateur Photographer Magazine where you can see my images featured and relieve your boredom!
This is the first time I've been published in a photography magazine, and to say I'm pretty chuffed is a bit of an understatement!
NB I'm not from Derbyshire however, they must have Googled 'Melbourne' to see where it is to add to my profile and picked the wrong one?!

I'm strange.
Some people are likely raising their hands reading this going, "Yeah, no shit asshole".
barbara boxer is one of the many numerous names I call my daughter. Among other names:
barbara
barbara brown
Jackson brown
brown allstar
brownie (and she happens to be a brownie girlscout, although I've been calling her this before she even was one. Now it's even more fitting!)
jackson 5
little rock from arkansas (I swear to god I call her this..... a lot... although I'm not quite sure why really? It evolved from many other names as all these names do)
little rock (you know .... in case I'm in a hurry)
bullmichael (long story, but she watches rocky and bullwinkle, and since she was little she's called Bullwinkle .. Bullmichael. So I call her Bullmichael).
babe (vintage dude. Don't fuck with the old school)
babestar
babe-a-lot
allstar
rock (no not the wresler asshole)
rocky (not to be confused with the boxer, not the barbara boxer, i mean the movie boxer. No not the cartoon rocky and bullwinkle, I mean Stalone dude. Wow this is confusing)
rockstar
rock sta-e-a (short A's, Long E pronounced. I've been calling her this a lot lately. It's a version of star that got daddy-fied into a weird language)
the rocking babe (this actually gets ROCKING sung like a song.. .like singing "what a ROCKINNNN' BABE)
femmy, femstar, feminine female (these are popular when I'm calling her for dinner or a chore or something... like this.. " hey femmmy? feminine femaleeeeee. femstar it's time for dinner" ..... 3 names banged out in 1 request!)
feminine allstar
barbie (yes the fucking doll. Bite me. She likes them)
babe store (not a popular one. Although it's climbing the charts)
Chloé (used occasionally. Like when I pick her up from school and she's tagging along ... "Chloé come on". Although usually I say Babe in place of Chloé for the most generic of names. Chloé is rare and not used often unless she's in trouble)
There are dozens of others .... seriously. And new names all the time as the new names evolve from the old names. Some names get retired or just evolve into new ones. I have combined over the years likely over 1 hundred names for Chloé.
FORBIDDEN:
Clo (if I even call her Clo, she gets mad. The same equivalent mad as I get when she dares call me Dad which she has done occasionally when she was REAL mad at me. I Think she has called me Dad like twice. It was weird man. Sometimes I'll think she says "Dad" and I'll say "Did you just call me Dad??" and she'll laugh and go "haha of course not, I said Daddy!"
The photo at hand? Chloe was very sick on Sunday. She spent the entire day throwing up into a bucket. I got her a sick magazine and a sick movie. Some weird shit called Ponyo, like Anime disney crazy movie. My mom always got me sick prizes when I was little, so I do the same for Barbara Boxer. Not the senator who lost the election, the kid in this photo.
Oh and that pig? Her name is Pigetta. She has held the permanent stay as toy prized possession #1 since the departure of Piggy 3 years ago. Piggy died. Piggy got lost dude. I think . Not entirely sure. Pigetta is the replacement, the little sister or some shit. Of course I was told the other day I am Pigetta's dad. And Barbara Boxer is the mommy. I cleared that shit up real quick with Barbara Boxer and told her I was the fucking pigs grandfather.
So I conclude this entire passage with this message to you:
I'm the grandfather of a stuffed pig

Article by Maureen Dowd in The New York Times :
Macbeth has his doubts.
But his wife taunts him about his manliness until he bloodies his country.
It’s hard to believe, four centuries after Shakespeare, that the fear of being unmanned is still so potent that it could wreck a country.
But it is. And it has.
Donald Drumpf’s warped view of masculinity has warped this nation’s response to a deadly pandemic. And Drumpf doesn’t even have a diabolical Lady MacTrump whispering in his ear, goading him about being a man. He goads himself, fueled by ghostly memories of his autocratic father.
As the Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt writes: “The tyrant, Macbeth and other plays suggest, is driven by a range of sexual anxieties: a compulsive need to prove his manhood, dread of impotence, a nagging apprehension that he will not be found sufficiently attractive or powerful, a fear of failure. Hence the penchant for bullying, the vicious misogyny, and the explosive violence. Hence, too, the vulnerability to taunts. Especially those bearing a latent or explicit sexual charge.”
Drumpf’s fear of emasculation led to his de-mask-ulation. Instead of cleaving to science and reason, he stuck with the old, corny Gordon Gekko routine, putting concern for the stock market above all else.
Like Macbeth, the president made tragic errors of judgment and plunged his country into a nightmare. Our trust in government is depleted, and our relationships in the world are tattered. As Fintan O’Toole wrote in The Irish Times, the world has loved, hated and envied the United States. But never before has it pitied us. Until now.

Drumpf has always said that the whole world is laughing at us because it’s taking advantage of us. That sound you’re hearing is not laughter.
“He could be on his way to re-election now if he had done what many of the governors did and followed science and public health advice and if he had leveled with people about what the requirements were and why,’’ says David Axelrod, the former Obama strategist. “If he had done those things, the country would have responded and been in a much better place.
“But he didn’t have the emotional capacity to do it. At a minimum, it’s Shakespearean. It’s almost biblical.”

Even Drumpf’s allies are baffled about why he can’t fake a sense of compassion and competency. He has made enough cheesy movie cameos — even one hawking cheese-stuffed Pizza Hut crust — that he should know how to pretend to be halfway human.
Now the president is threatening another crisis, tweeting that we might have to delay the election because there could be mail-in voting fraud.
In his view, either he wins or the election is rigged. He’s trying to make mail-in ballots socially unacceptable the same way he made masks socially unacceptable for the first five months of the plague.
The Washington Post reports that backlogs at the U.S. Postal Service are causing some employees there to worry that the Drumpf lackey in charge, a top donor, is intentionally gumming up the works just in time for the election. It is astounding the corrupt lengths the administration seems willing to go to — destroying the Postal Service to win the election. Ben Franklin would be incensed.
As Axelrod notes, “Whatever happened back in the Bush v. Gore recount days will seem like the Garden of Innocence compared to what’s going to happen now. Drumpf is not going to walk to the rostrum and say, ‘The people have spoken and I accept their verdict.’’’
Even Drumpf’s closest allies in Congress, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, couldn’t stomach the idea of postponing the election, and both have swallowed a lot over the last three years. Drumpf’s little trial balloon blew up like the Hindenburg.
Alexander Burns wrote in The New York Times that Drumpf was too pathetic to be a tyrant: “Far from a strongman, Mr. Drumpf has lately become a heckler in his own government, promoting medical conspiracy theories on social media, playing no constructive role in either the management of the coronavirus pandemic or the negotiation of an economic rescue plan in Congress — and complaining endlessly about the unfairness of it all.”
Talk about unfair: The one thing holding the country together has been the additional $600 per week in unemployment benefits that has allowed millions to pay the rent and fill the fridge. Republicans, though, are so convinced that the few extra hundred dollars in jobless pay is keeping people from work that they are loath to renew it. Unless Congress gets it together soon and finds a way to extend the aid, the country is going to be facing a catastrophe of homelessness and need that makes these past few months look pleasant.
After the president began doing the coronavirus briefings again, he tried a “new” tone, saying he was getting used to masks — “Think about patriotism. Maybe it helps. It helps” — then face-planting by offering good wishes to a past party pal and accused pedophile enabler, Ghislaine Maxwell. But then things got really crazy as he defended a retweet of a doctor who has promoted hydroxychloroquine as well as declaimed on the existence of alien D.N.A. and demon sperm.
“I thought her voice was an important voice, but I know nothing about her,’’ he told reporters. (As he told Barstool sports: “It’s the retweets that get you in trouble.”) He fell into more self-pity, complaining about his ratings compared to those of Dr. Anthony Fauci: “Nobody likes me. It can only be my personality, that’s all.”
It has been clear for some time that Drumpf’s Panglossian attitude toward the virus was turning him into a public health menace.
But this week, the culture war over masks crystallized with the death of Herman Cain. The former Republican presidential candidate, who dissed masks and Covid restrictions, proudly tweeted a picture from the Drumpf rally in Tulsa, surrounded by his fellow mask-less friends. “Having a fantastic time,” he wrote. Nine days later, he tested positive for corona. As we have learned, this virus often has the final say.
Right away, White House officials knew that this death would be laid at Drumpf’s feet. They began warning reporters that they should not politicize Cain’s death.
At the Friday White House briefing, asked if officials were concerned that the 74-year-old Cain may have contracted the virus at the rally, Kayleigh McEnany replied, “We’ll never know,” and sanctimoniously added, “I will not politicize Herman Cain’s passing.’’
But it is undeniable that Drumpf politicized masks and set a lethal example.
As Jeremy Peters wrote in The Times, Republican officials all over the country “have adopted a similar tone of skepticism and defiance, rejecting the advice of public health officials and deferring instead to principles they said were equally important: conservative values of economic freedom and personal liberty.”
So conservatives are willing to embrace a new ethos? Give me liberty. And death.

In Canada, there is a lot of missing or murdered native women. A lot of people want an investigation but not Stephen Harper, our prime minister. We have the federal election now but sadly, a lot of people and politicians just talk about niqab...There is like maybe 2 person with a niqab in Canada...There is xenophoby and islamophobia with that... It is revolting. It's like that in a lot of countries..Usa is a good example of that...Donald Trump, Ben Carson... www.thestar.com/news/canada/2014/05/01/1000_native_women_...

According to the billboard advert slogan 'This is Living' drinking Corona Extra beer was considered a must. Indeed, since 1998 for example this beer had been the top-selling imported drink in the USA. How times have changed, with CNN recently reporting that a brand survey carried out in the USA in 2020 reported that 38% of Americans contacted would not buy Corona 'under any circumstances' because of the COVID-19 pandemic and a further 14% said they would not order a Corona in public. Later this year, Americans vote in their Presidential Election, now that's a sobering thought.

ON Friday night, the nation’s capital was under a tornado watch. And that was the best thing that happened to the White House all week.
As the president was being slapped by Mitt Romney for being too weak on national security, he was being rapped by a Times editorial for being too aggressive on national security.
A Times article by Jo Becker and Scott Shane revealed that the liberal law professor who campaigned against torture and the Iraq war now personally makes the final decisions on the “kill list,” targets for drone strikes. “A unilateral campaign of death is untenable,” the editorial asserted.
On Thursday, Bill Clinton once more telegraphed that he considers Obama a lightweight who should not have bested his wife. Bluntly contradicting the Obama campaign theme that Romney is a heartless corporate raider, Clinton told CNN that the Republican’s record at Bain was “sterling.”
Covering a humorous W. at the unveiling of his portrait, the White House press actually seemed nostalgic for the president who bollixed up Afghanistan, Iraq, Katrina and the economy — a sure sign that the Obama magic is flagging.
On Friday, an ugly job market report led to the stock market’s worst day of the year. As the recovery flat-lined, the president conceded to a crowd at a Honeywell factory in Golden Valley, Minn., that “our economy is still facing some serious headwinds” and getting sucked further into Europe’s sinkhole. In depressing imagery for the start of the summer campaign, cable channels carried the red Dow arrow pointing down while Obama spoke; the Dow wiped out all of its 2012 gains.
The president who started off with such dazzle now seems incapable of stimulating either the economy or the voters. His campaign is offering Obama 2012 car magnets for a donation of $10; cat collars reading “I Meow for Michelle” for $12; an Obama grill spatula for $40, and discounted hoodies and T-shirts. How the mighty have fallen.
Once glowing, his press is now burning. “To a very real degree, 2008’s candidate of hope stands poised to become 2012’s candidate of fear,” John Heilemann wrote in New York magazine, noting that because Obama feels he can’t run on his record, his campaign will resort to nuking Romney.
In his new book, “A Nation of Wusses,” the Democrat Ed Rendell, the former governor of Pennsylvania, wonders how “the best communicator in campaign history” lost his touch.
The legendary speaker who drew campaign crowds in the tens of thousands and inspired a dispirited nation ended up nonchalantly delegating to a pork-happy Congress, disdaining the bully pulpit, neglecting to do any L.B.J.-style grunt work with Congress and the American public, and ceding control of his narrative.
As president, Obama has never felt the need to explain or sell his signature pieces of legislation — the stimulus and health care bills — or stanch the flow of false information from the other side.
“The administration lost the communications war with disastrous consequences that played out on Election Day 2010,” Rendell writes, and Obama never got credit for the two pieces of legislation where he reached for greatness.
The president had lofty dreams of playing the great convener and conciliator. But at a fund-raiser in Minneapolis, he admitted he’s just another combatant in a capital full of Hatfields and McCoys. No compromises, just nihilism.
If he wins the election, “the fever may break,” he said. “My hope, my expectation, is that after the election, now that it turns out that the goal of beating Obama doesn’t make much sense because I’m not running again, that we can start getting some cooperation again.”
In his new biography, “Barack Obama: The Story,” David Maraniss writes that a roommate of the young Obama compared him to Walker Percy’s protagonist in “The Moviegoer”: an observer of his life, one step removed.
Obama’s boss at his community organizing job in Chicago, Jerry Kellman, observed: “He was not unwilling to take risks, but was just this strange combination of someone who would have to weigh everything to death, and then take a dramatic risk at the end. He was reluctant to do confrontation, to push the other side because it might blow up — and it might. But one thing Alinsky did understand was that within reason, once something blows up, to a certain degree it doesn’t hurt, it helps.”
Maraniss’s book depicts Obama on an intense odyssey of self-discovery, moving toward defining himself less as a half-white man with white girlfriends than as a black man who wanted to be part of a black community.
His New York girlfriend, Genevieve Cook, told Maraniss that Obama confessed to her that “he felt like an impostor. Because he was so white. There was hardly a black bone in his body.” When she predicted that his future might be with a black woman — “That lithe, bubbly, strong black lady is waiting somewhere!” she wrote in her journal — he told her “he doubted there were any black women he would feel truly comfortable with. I would tell him, ‘No, she is out there.’ ”
He wanted to get out of the corporate world he found so distasteful — he described himself as “a spy behind enemy lines” — and reimagine himself as a politician.
On CNBC on Friday, Romney complained that Obama has “been more focused on his perspective of his historic legislative achievements than he has been focused on getting people back to work.”
A president focused on historic achievements? Imagine that. But in his lame way, Romney got at Obama’s problem: The Moviegoer prefers to float above, at a reserve, in grandiose mists.
As Maraniss recounts, Obama said he liked reading Hemingway because of Papa’s “integrity of grasping for those times, those visions, that are ones of true magnificence and profundity.”
Cook told Maraniss that she thought Obama’s desire to “play out a superhero life” was “a very strong archetype in his personality.”
But superheroes and mythic figures must boldly lead. Obama’s caution — ingrained from a life of being deserted by his father and sometimes his mother, and of being, as he wrote to another girlfriend, “caught without a class, a structure, or tradition to support me” — has restrained him at times.
In some ways, he’s still finding himself, too absorbed to see what’s not working. But the White House is a very hard place to go on a vision quest, especially with a storm brewing.
On May 1, 2010 leaders of the immigration reform movement were arrested in Washington DC. At the end of a peaceful demonstration at Lafayette Park, leaders of the immigration reform movement were arrested for a sit-in at the railings in front of the White House in what was intended to be an act of civil disobedience. Set against the background of Arizona's adoption of SB1070, the leaders vowed not to move from the railings until either an immigration reform law was passed or they were arrested. Police arrested the volunteers in a very calm and civil pro-forma manner while the surrounding crowds called on President Obama to take the lead in implementing immigration reform. The speakers said that the Democrat Party, because of the promises it made, especially to the Latino community, during the election, now had a duty to deliver on those promises. The leaders were arrested and placed on board a bus that had been parked nearby. The bus then drove 20-30 feet to the plaza in front of the White House, where each of the arrested leaders was removed one at a time, photographed and videotaped, and then put back on the bus. The bus remained parked for 10 minutes and then drove away, apparently taking the arrested volunteers and leaders to a police station in Anacostia in Washington DC for processing. Once the bus left the crowd dispersed peacefully. One police officer that was overseeing the police activity at the scene said that the organizers of the demonstration had ensured that it was both well organized and controlled.

The mass turnout, because of this it is recorded in round elections, drew all to the problem of citizen participation. Everyone, everyone, to the left, center, right, have stressed the need for the policy back to talk to people in the flesh, listen to them, makes them involved in the choices that are made at every institutional level.
The parties in the first person, if they want to survive, they need a strong injection of participation. Well, as you may not agree. But a few hours have passed after the conclusion of the election, now we will go to the ballots, that the first evidence for institutions and political parties, was negative. To say the least. To participate you need to know. What happened in the Senate and the House where they discussed how to begin the process of constitutional reforms, electoral law in the first place, it is the exact opposite. Not only that. The veto of the PDL to change immediately porcellum so substantial, the threat of a crisis in the government, pose a fundamental problem: the role of Parliament. So proceeding, any measure which it finds broad agreements can not find different majorities. The risk is to gag the two chambers. Consider, for example laws concerning civil rights, personal freedom, citizenship to children of immigrants, not to mention the conflict of interest. Instead of "broad agreement", we would not like you were talking about "narrow understandings".

About 50 people attended a rally Saturday 23 January 2010 on the Victorian parliament house steps to Save Solar Systems and build the Mildura Solar Thermal Power Plant. Adam Bandt from the Greens spoke on Why we need to Support Solar Systems Mildura Power Plant.
Solar Systems pioneeed the solar technology of mirrored dishes that concentrate light on a central panel of high-quality photovoltaic material. Due to the pressure of the financial crisis the company went into voluntary administration in September 2009. The Victorian Government promised $125million in 2006 in total funding for the project, of which only $2million-$3million has been paid.

========================================
If you think about it for just a moment the intellectual resources available to us here in Australia. You think about the intellectual resources you have in the workers at the Solar Systems Plant for example. People like David Turner, who if you've come to one of these rallies before you will see an incredibly intelligent person who has devoted their whole life to how we can make renewable energy happen.
Here at Solar Systems we had world leading technology and there is absolutely no reason technologically or resource wise why we couldn't be leading the world in renewable energy technology.
What is lacking is the political will, and what we are seeing is people interested in investing in solar technology and building solar power plants here going offshore, and no where is that more apparent than the current administration of Solar Systems. What happens in an administration is that the administrator and liquidator comes in and says 'How can we get the best price here and the best return for our shareholders.' The question is not 'How can we save the planet?'; the question is not 'How can we jump-start Australia to renewable energy technology?'; it is 'How can we get the best return for the multinational power company that has a huge investment in us?'
And if that means packing up half of it and selling half of it to some overseas company or to some other company that just wants the intellectual property and throwing the workers on the scrapheap, then that's exactly what they'll do.
And that's why this campaign is so absolutely critical. Because what we have got in Abbotsford - what we had - is a real live example of what life in the 21st century could be like if we wanted it to be like. But instead what we've got is a Government at the Federal level who is intent on propping up the coal industry. And that's essentially all that they're doing. That's their energy policy.
Chris gave a number of very good ways, very good examples of how we could fund renewable energy.
One of the other things we could do is stop giving billions of dollars in direct assistance to the coal industry. And that is what this Government has done since it came to power. And no-one is more responsible for that than the member for the electorate who is the Finance Minister who is the one in charge of writing the cheques, and lets have a look at some of the cheques they have written.
In 08/09 in their budget they devoted $400 million to the unproven technology of carbon capture and storage. So while you have proven solar technology happening right here in Abottsford that doesn't get a cent, you've got carbon capture and storage getting $400 million of which $150 million has already gone to pilot projects in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
So those places are already getting the money, the money is not already on the table for them, it is in their pockets, the pockets of the coal companies - the multinational coal companies - they are already getting it. They have had those projects up and running and had that funding come. In the last budget, as if $400 million wasn't enough, in the last years budget $2 billion was given to this fantastically named "Low emissions Coal Flagship Project' to get carbon capture and storage up and running.
At the same time they announced a thing called the 'Solar Flagship Project'. If you were in the solar industry at the moment and you wanted to get some of this solar flagship money, if you ring up the Federal Government, the only information that is available is a press release. It is one of those classic 'Hollow Men' creations where they announce it and think about how to implement it afterwards.
If you wanted to get your hands on some of that carbon capture and storage money, however, they have set up a committee for that - applications for that close in August and they are going to announce this year how that $2billion is going to be spent amoung the carbon capture and storage lobby.
So its another classic example of this Government big on announcement but actually when you look at where the money is going, look at how they are spending it, they are spending it to line the pockets of some of this country and the world's biggest polluting industries.
At the same time as Kevin Rudd jets around and talks about the importance of productivity you have workers effectively on the Government payroll in the coal industry. Meanwhile people like David Turner and the other workers at Solar Systems get thrown on the scap heap.
They tell us the market is going to be the solution, and when you look at the market solutions that have been proposed by this government, they can't even get that right. The price of renewable energy credits which was meant to be the driving force in the future has absolutely plummetted because they have included things like solar hot water and heat pumps in that. As a result you have these large scale wind companies who are saying 'We would love to build turbines here. We will go and build them down in Gippsland so that the workers can transition from working at Loy Yang and Yallourn to come over and work for clean energy'.
I'll just say, by the way, some of the unions who are involved in this, they did a survey and found that, they asked their workers who are down there in the coal industry: 'If you had a choice between your current job and a job in renewable energy that was at the same pay, what would you do?' 90 per cent of them said they would rather be working in the renewable energy industry. So when you here all this talk about jobs you need to understand that actually the workers who are working down in these polluting industries themselves understand that the way of the future is renewable energy.
They tell us the market is the solution, and they haven't been able to get that right. They say, as Chris mentioned, those days of direct funding and investing are over, but they are prepared to put in $12million in the last budget to funding greater roads to get more coal [inaudible]. They are prepared to do all these things. They say we don't pick winners. Well actually thats true. The Government doesn't pick winners. The Government is backing losers. The Government is backing losers in the coal industry and they are doing it every day of the week. And its time to say enough is enough. We cannot wait anymore to turn this ship around. It is well overdue.
Scientists are telling us we have got at most 5 - 10 years if we haven't past the tipping point already - 5 - 10 years toget the whole planet effectively running on zero emissions. And people will say, well thats impossible to do. And people will say that we can't act here unless everyone acts. In fact the opposite is the case.
Can you imagine the implications it would send around the world if a country like Australia within a short space of 10 years managed to get itself powered 100% by renewable energy. If a coal dependant country like ours did it, that would send shock waves around the world. That change has got to start somewhere and I'm hoping that one aspect of that is that we save the Solar Systems Plant and that another aspect of it is that at the Federal election - here comes the selfish part of the speech - that at the Federal election you come out and help us win the Federal seat of Melbourne in which this is happening.
We only need one in twenty people in Melbourne to change their mind and vote Green and we win our first House of Representative seat in a general election. Now if we did that on the back of a campaign for direct investment in renewable energy - the back of a campaign to: I'm doing something on February 14 - goto the Transition Decade launch - a project about how to turn Australia around within 10 years and get something out of renewable energy. If we can do it on the back of a campaign that is going to send a message right across Australia and right throughout the rest of the world. But actually the public is well in advance of the major parties on this issue. The public knows it is time for action and the public is going to speak up. When that happens the nexus between the Government and the coal industry is going to be broken.
They are saying that some of these things are old fashioned, that we can't talk abou direct funding anymore and we can't talk about transition plans.
Well I don't want us to be remembered as the generation that was so unwilling to distort the market that we were prepared to destroy the planet. And lets just look at the amazing amount of support we have given to banks in the last little while - support which is still flowing. It was Westpac or Commonwealth Bank just recently announced they were going to borrow another $3billion at the generous rates being offered by the Government as part of the financial crisis assistance package to prop up the ailing home loan market.
If there is that much money available for the banks, if there is that much money available for the coal industry, there is that much money available for renewables. And it is our job to say to the Government enough is enough, its time to save Solar Systems and begin the renewable energy revolution right here from Melbourne and spread it across Australia.

Fraudulent robocalls pretending to come from Elections Canada are "absolutely outrageous" and should not be tolerated in a democracy, the chief electoral officer told parliamentarians Thursday. "These are very serious matters that strike at the integrity of our democracy," said Marc Mayrand. "Whether it was organized or bigger or whatever, the fact that electors, at least that we know in Guelph (Ont.), were misdirected by calls falsely made on behalf of Elections Canada is absolutely outrageous."

ROBORECALL! NEW ELECTION NOW! 7 RIDINGS DISPUTED IN COURT
"A citizen advocacy group is asking the Federal Court of Canada to overturn election results in seven ridings. The Council of Canadians is backing the first legal challenge of election results in closely fought races in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Yukon and Ontario. All of the ridings named were won by Conservative candidates and all but one was decided by fewer than 1,000 votes."

$312 per prisoner, per day
Land a bed in jail via rape, murder or any other heinous criminal act, and you’re suddenly worth $113,974 a year to the federal government — nearly ten times as much. Fair? Hardly. But that’s annual average cost for keeping an inmate incarcerated in Canada, according to the latest report from Corrections Canada. It means the federal government is paying $312 per prisoner, per day, to keep Canada’s worst citizens healthy, happy and secure in the penitentiaries our killers and cretins chose to live in.

Call me chatter minded. That or just deficiently curious. I guess it‘s just a matter of perspective really, but when the opportunity arises, granted be it not all that often lately, I do have a nasty habit of allowing for my mind to wander. It will usually start off as a tangent, like say for example stopping dead in my tracks this morning while winding up hoses, to consider why it was I’d had Whitney Houston’s “How will I know” stuck in my head for the last hour and a half, how it had found it’s way there in the first place, and why it was I really didn’t seem to mind. Curious.
It happens from time to time. A thought forms, and I pick at it like a scab. I pick, I prod, I probe, and I ponder. I consider the absurd, the other side, and I even allow for the occasional “yes I am a man, and I don‘t feel the lest bit bad about making a spectacle out of you, after a fellow subordinate had offered us each an handful of Wasabi flavored peanuts, and you made the mistake of saying “I dare you to suck on them”, while I’d had my wit about me.” Most men I know just don’t generally suggest sucking on spicy nuts in the work place…Come to think of it, and oh yes I did think of it. Most men I know don’t generally dare each other to suck on nuts at all. It’s not common, and it’s just the sort of thing that has a habit of putting my gears into motion when things are running smooth and I have a few extra moments to make considerations outside of whether or not is was a good idea to let the new guy wash the hood position.
A curious tangent at first that for one reason or another inevitably leads me blindly to yet another thought. That thought grows, and somehow manifests into yet another ponder pow wow, that will in most cases be completely unrelated. Eventually that thought will lead me in yet another path pointed in an entirely new direction. Take Wasabi flavored nuts sucking for example. At some point not long after, I found myself stooped in front of a drive wheel absorbed in after thought, as I sprayed acid onto the wheel like a zombie, and suddenly I had a new thought. I had to considered how good the possibility was that I might be on some form of government watch list.
Where the hell did that come from?
Well…Lets see. I do have family that work in high security government jobs, and I can’t deny that I think at least half of my immediate family is in fact nuts, as far as I’m concerned. There is also the undeniable fact revolving largely around my eldest’s sisters, uhm, not so better half…I think he is about as useful as an empty canteen in the middle of a Sahara. Perhaps that is how I drew the sparrow to it’s nest. Perhaps it was another path. In earnest at this point of hind sight it’s really all speculation. Still the thought was there. Or was it? Could they be watching me? I at that point could not help but consider that it might not have been the best idea to first perform a search on my computer the other night, for information and images of a Barret .50 caliber semi automatic sniper rifle, right before I then conducted a thorough search for the where abouts and history of Slobodan Milosevic. You can’t deny…It does raises questions.
It didn't stop there though. I then pondered further. That seemed to lead me to a multiple choice section of my brain, where I could decide wear the next ponder would be struck from. Sort of like those old books I use to read back in junior high, where I could decided at some point what would happen next, and then turned to the page as instructed. It never worked out the way I wanted, and I usually ended up finding myself all corpse like or imprisoned. Odd that a recollection like that would then lead me to curiosities such as my spending habits.
I’ve heard the conspiracy theorists plaints, and their hushed messages. I rarely carry cash, and most of my purchases are made with the convenience of plastic. This would be the cue where I considered some of my more resent purchases at the mega Wal-Mart and other various locations round about town, taking comfort in the fact that between the time I'd made the some what resent and arguably random purchases of beer, condoms, hamburger meat, insect poison, and a lawn mower mulching blade, I’d not formed a wild hair and gone out to garner myself a passport. That sort of consideration eventually led me in yet another brand new direction. A direction that for some reason actually makes sense to me for once. I thought about the Wife. That thought then led me in the direction of this fine countries leaders. There again, that path made perfect sense. The Wife is well, Wife. She is the boss of this here domicile, and we must adhere to her law. Like wise our administrative council is in control of this here country. Each equal in there own way. While in charge, they must answer to the folk they speak for...So ends theory.
The Wife runs the house, and I have to admit considering that I am quite matter of factly overlord and final nay sayer round about these parts, I don't mind saying that she does a pretty damn fine job. She even said I could say so, you can ask her. Our presidency, they run...Well, their running this country strait into the ground, near as I can figure, but it’s really beside the point. I honestly keep having these images of the Roman empire’s final days flashing before my eyes. I recalled that during the last election, while I had voted, I had not been shy in confessing that I didn’t see the point. I’m feeling much the same way about the up and coming elections now. I hear big Fred is planning on taking a stab at the presidency, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t know where he stands on anything, and he does wear a suit. For some reason that makes the eye twitch…
From Whitney Houston’s “how will I know”, to sucking on nuts, to government observation, to my immediate family, and our leaders, in less then two and half hours. The brain was not done there. It then had to go off on a rant. I considered big Fred, and his claims of coming from blue collar roots. Then I considered that it really didn’t matter where he had came from, right now he was wearing a suit, and crudely dressed blue collar sort like myself don’t generally get on well with folk who wear suits. Then I allowed myself to consider just what it was I would like to see in a president.
How bout honestly…It’s probably asking to much, but gee whiz it would be a good start. How bout a blue collar president. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want a president that doesn’t wear a suit. I want a president that real people can actually connect with, because he is not just another political puppet, and we know it, because he's been caught on camera no less then thirty eight times, out on the white house lawn in a pair of faded sweat pants, scooping up dog crap with a rake and spade shovel on Sunday mornings. I want a president that addresses other world leaders as “Dude”, and “Bro” and wont talk to the tight ass that thinks a knuckle exchange of "Pound'em" is uncivilized. I want a president that wouldn't worry about impressing the rest of the world with proper articulation and uses informalities like “Now that just ain’t right”, and “Try that, n’ we’ll put a boot in yer ass…I mean it now, ya hear.” I want a president that would consider the repercussions of ignoring the little people within the boarders of its own country, doesn’t care if Iran dislikes the way we conduct business with Turkey, and after a long day, wouldn’t bother considering the repercussions of bolting out of his racer orange and boss stripe painted limo in front of the white house in a dead run, screaming at the top of his lungs, “Damn it man clear a path! I’m prairie doggen!”. I want a president that addresses the nation dressed in dirty blue jeans and a Dale Earnhardt tee shirt with the sleeves cut off, while he changes the timing belt on his neighbors 68’ Camaro. "Well, soon as I'm done here, we're gonna start this puppy up n' check out the timing. When that's good I'm gonna get on the horn with Hu. Hu, Hing, Ding, Deng, Dang, Dude, whatever the hell her name is, I'm gonna call'em up and let'em know we are breaking ties with China, because well, communism is an evil thing, and so is most of what we export from them." I want a president that shows up at the NATO conference with sixteen kegs of chilled Coors Light, and starts off the session with a Bill Engvall “Heres your sign North Korea” Joke, right before he mentions that Texas Whoppers from Burger King would be served along side that weird green stuff the Nigerian delegates brought along. It sounded pretty good in my head. I want a blue collar, company man that doesn't just stand for the people, but is actually a real person.
Then. Then I considered government watch dogs again, and that was about the time I got blasted with about six and half gallons of H2O, from a high powered water canon somewhere on the other side of the truck, and George Thorogood’s “I’m a steady rollin man” suddenly replaced everything.
There are times I don’t know for certain if I have any real direction. I have a habit of questioning everything that comes within ten feet of me. I’m not even sure if there is any rhyme or reason to the way I think, but at the end of the day, I do figure one thing for fact. I think I’m still a steady rollin man.
Until next time, stay warm, stay dry, stay safe.
Static.
Um...Youtube didn't have I'm a steady rollin man...So you'll just have to hum it to yourself.

I took this photo just off State Street last year right before the election. Now it seems that I may have violated the intellectual property rights of the artist who allegedly infringed on the Associated Press intellectual property rights to a photograph that appears to have been taken by a photographer who never actually signed the rights over to them. Should I be worried?
Obviously this is absurd. It's also only a slight exaggeration of the issues raised by the lawsuit and countersuit between Associated press and artist Shepard Fairey. AP alleges that Fairey infringed on their copyrighted photo of Barack Obama, taken by photographer Mannie Garcia. Fairey countersued, claiming "fair use" rights to the image he used as a starting point for his famous Obama poster.
More at Letter from Here.
Relieved I got a relatively good photo of my state's best Secretary of State and a good slice of C-17 Globemaster III for her. Hope SecStateWA Wyman approves!
Not that my endorsement as a lowly aviation-centric & transit-centric photographer will sway many votes; but I 100% endorse Kim Wyman for reelection as Washington State Secretary of State. She's "gets it" the need for elections integrity, does a good job running the state archives as well, and is pro-soldier. SecStateWA Wyman also has quite the brain trust to run elections, having accumulated experience running elections now as both a former county auditor and incumbent Secretary of State. It meant a lot to this Washington State voter to finally meet Kim in person and say thank you.

Not a good job on my end, but here you go. I got a lot to learn yet about how to photograph...

Gammon attack! People's Assembly – General Election Now! March and rally, central London 12th January 2019.
Event Video: www.americanprogressaction.org/events/2009/12/fairelectio...
Citizens are very concerned about the role of campaign contributions from interested industries in shaping the debates on health care and climate control. And members of Congress describe fundraising as the least favorite part of their jobs. So will the Supreme Court's pending decision in Citizens United v. the Federal Election Commission be the spark that gets Congress to adopt sweeping legislation for public financing of elections? The Citizens United case could allow unlimited corporate spending in elections, forcing elected officials to spend more time raising money than they do today.
Please join the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Common Cause, and Public Campaign for a discussion with Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (D-Conn.) as they discuss why they sponsored the Fair Elections Now Act, and what they see as the road ahead in wake of the Citizens United decision.
