In this evocative black-and-white photograph, a woman and a nun share a moment at a gate, symbolizing community, trust, and compassion. The intricate ironwork frames the subjects while their contrasting attire—modern and traditional—reflects the blending of worlds. Subtle details in posture and expression convey a quiet narrative of understanding, kindness, and everyday life.
The Republican Party hasn’t had a coherent policy message for years. Instead, they focus on cultural wedge issues, like Critical Race Theory, to incite voters. They call any government intervention “socialism,” meant to equate it with communism and government overreach. Even more ludicrous, as The Washington Post’s Catherine Rampell reports, “Lara Trump told Fox News viewers that inflation is part of a Democratic plot to force families to give up beloved American traditions and holidays, including Thanksgiving and Halloween.” Their supporters eat this stuff up. Whether in or out of power, nothing the GOP has done has helped Americans who need it most. You would think we would learn. I’ve scratched my head raw, wondering why people refuse to vote their pocketbooks. There’s nothing logical about voters who support the culture wars over their hard-earned cash. But there is a logic to why the GOP keeps doing this. They have nothing else.
According to The Washington Post, the two major electorate concerns are the economy and the pandemic. The electorate always blames the current president for their predecessors’ actions. As Harry Truman once said, “The buck stops here.” Let’s not forget Donald Trump left this country with a record-setting deficit. He politicized COVID, and Joe Biden inherited mask and vaccine hesitancy.
But the Democrats have their own messaging problems. At a recent virtual fundraiser, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand shocked the attendees with her candid assessment, “Democrats are terrible at messaging.” Moderates haven’t been talking about the roots of this inflation. And they’re doing little to educate the electorate. While the more progressive wing, according to Rampell, blames inflation on corporate greed. So far, there has been no straightforward and consistent strategy for selling voters on the Biden Administration’s accomplishments.
Yet, the economy is in good shape, much better than in March 2020, when COVID first took hold. In mid-November, first-time unemployment claims dropped to a level not seen since 1969. And the gross domestic product was at 2.1%, slightly better than the estimate. Sixty-five percent of Americans believe the economy’s in poor shape. Why is that? Inflation. Everything costs more, and many are having trouble making ends meet.
Interpreting economic numbers, let alone formulating policy, is part art and part soothsaying. One reason we’re encountering a rise in prices is “post-pandemic spending.” The demand for products is high. Many are eager to spend their stimulus checks after almost two years of deprivation. The supply chain was already stretched to the limit before the pandemic, but suppliers can’t meet consumers’ appetites with demand so high. Shipping companies have raised their prices enormously. Globalization allowed us to seek the lowest prices to manufacture and buy goods from Asia. And now it’s coming back to pick our pockets. High demand is causing logjams at ports. Once dockers offload goods, trucks and trains are straining to get these products to market. They are held in expensive storage facilities until they’re ready for transport. Every part of the supply chain is blaming each other. Unless Democrats change voters’ perceptions, they will pay on election day.
And then there’s the Omicron variant. Will this health crisis ever end? We’re all tired of mandates. How many times have we thought we’d turned the corner only for some new variant to arise? Scientists first detected Omicron in South Africa. If everyone had gotten vaccinated when vaccines first became available, we might have been able to avoid the more serious Delta variant. And if everyone in the world had equal access to these vaccines, that would have helped. But we live in a world of “haves” and “have nots.” Americans have the luxury of getting boosters, while, as of September 2021, only 2% of Africans have received the shots. No matter how strictly we enforce travel bans, it’s just too easy for people to move from one part of the world to another.
Economic and vaccine inequity are intractable problems to solve. The details mean little to most voters—our perceptions of our own circumstances and who controls the message win elections. With no economic strategy, Republicans will continue to focus on blaming Biden. They will blame the administration for the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and conveniently sidestep the Trump administration’s actions that set that in motion. They will focus on the prolonged COVID crisis screaming about an endless set of mandates and lockdowns, even though their anti-mandate messages have prolonged this medical crisis. And, despite most Americans’ support for lower childcare and eldercare costs and improvements to our failing infrastructure, the GOP will couch these as government handouts—socialism! Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott voiced the GOP strategy when he stated, “[Inflation] is a gold mine for us.” But this just may be the Republicans’ undoing.
While the Democrats messaging has so far failed to materialize voter support, there is some good news. President Biden is finally making sure he and his administration get credit for it. The supply chain problem is beginning to ease because of pressure from the President and local governments. Steven Rattner, Obama’s auto-industry czar, reports that “In mid-November, 86 container ships were floating around San Pedro Bay waiting for a berth. Two weeks later, that figure is down to 44, roughly where we were in early September.” Also, the cost of sending a container from China to the West Coast has dropped 25% since its all-time high of $20,000.
Biden made it clear: “Because of the actions the administration has taken in partnership with business and labor, retailers and grocery stores, freight movers and railroads, those [holiday] shelves are going to be stocked. The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have moved 16% more containers so far this year than last year. By working with business and labor, my administration has been able to handle the huge surge in goods moving through some of our biggest ports. [Major retailers are] ready to meet the consumer demand for the holidays.”
And he is pushing back on Republicans like Scott by pointing out that by not supporting Biden’s Build Back Better bill, the GOP would rather we pay higher prices for drugs and child- and eldercare. “The bills you’re paying right now for daycare could be substantially lowered, capped at seven percent of your income. Republicans think that those 200,000 children who need regular doses of insulin should continue to pay as much as $1,000 a month instead of $35 a month. But the Republicans said, ‘No, pay more.’”
The president and every Democrat legislator must take this message to the people, over and over and over. Every single day. The Republicans want America to fail. That’s how they regain their power—power that enables them to do nothing else but be in control.
The midterm elections won’t be about racial injustice. And the Democrats should ignore Republican attempts to steer the electoral rhetoric towards culture issues. If we want to continue to affect change, socially, racially, and economically, in the short term the Democrats must cut the noise and focus on the points voters think are crucial right now. That’s the economy and the pandemic. If the Democrats don’t have the votes to pass legislation to help Americans, the GOP certainly won’t even try.

This is my 1930 Ford Model A with my youngest child and only daughter. My daughter is now a college graduate and over thirty years old. Last week my oldest of three sisters, my wife and I had lunch with my 93 year old mother at Mom's ranch house in Central Texas. We had to get permission from the doctor and the eldercare facility, and sign waivers to break my Mom loose from for the occasion. "Ain't it funny how time slips away".

Originally this was the Schoharie County Alms House and Poor Farm. About 1949, it became A Franciscan Seminary. It was they who built the chapel wing. Sometime in the 70's 80's It became an Eldercare facility named Mountainside Manor. That closed in 2006 and the property sat abandoned until recently when it was purchased by the Russian Orthodox Church who are using it as a church regional HQ and an organic farm. They placed the "Onion Dome" on the chapel steeple replacing a spire.

Focus on Eldercare's response to COVID-19
At the purpose when the noxious impacts of COVID-19 showed first in Wuhan, the entire city and therefore the entire of Hubei Province ground to a halt. The lockdown of Wuhan brought remarkable torment and threatening difficulties for several individual occupants therein first focus. Presently, COVID-19 represents those equivalent difficulties for individuals and social welfare frameworks all-inclusive. Especially, it tests our aggregate endeavors to believe one another, particularly the foremost defenseless among us.
As a populace, individuals quite 70 will generally have more fragile insusceptible frameworks and progressively fundamental conditions that obstruct their capacity to battle the infection. They're likewise sure to dwell on bunch day to day environments, nearby people. Floods of COVID-19 passings in nursing homes — first within the Seattle territory, at that time on the brink of Sacramento and now during the country — have underscored this inauspicious reality. Up until now, Californians quite 65 have made up, at any rate, a fourth of the state's affirmed instances of COVID-19.
Be that because it may, guidelines, especially for helping living offices, are unsafely failing to satisfy the expectations in protecting California's older folks from this infection. Luck, Gov. Gavin Newsom's plan on Aging activity, as of now ongoing, presents an opportunity to forcefully address this peril and find how to secure an enormous number of more seasoned Americans.
Helped living focuses are an aid to the Eldercare business and therefore the enormous corporate proprietors that currently command the market. Simultaneously, in any case, an absence of guideline and oversight of staffing levels and capabilities — particularly prerequisites for on-location doctors and much prepared clinical experts — has left the business defenseless against misuse and unfortunate results. One glaring issue that has got to be tended to: helped living focuses are directed by the state Department of Social Services rather than the Department of Public Health.
In any case, it helped to measure maybe a piece of social welfare and clinical consideration conveyance framework, not only a direction for living. Propelled a year ago, Newsom's plan on Aging has framed a warning advisory group, is holding open gatherings and within the fall is planned to offer a 10-year plan which will address issues from lodging and vagrancy to crisis readiness to manhandle and disrespect. The venture has made a "Value Committee" to urge a contribution from a progressively differing gathering of residents and associations, including agents of the crippled network, Native Americans and other ethnic minorities.
Considering the spreading coronavirus general wellbeing emerging, it's basic that the representative's plan on Aging takes on an expansive and genuine open arrangement job. We weren't bothered with elevated level clichés for tending to the wants of the old. We'd like solid arrangements, solid guidelines with implementation teeth and a guarantee to continued oversight.
The Age of COVID-19
Older people who get themselves out of the blue alone without authority over their conditions are at specific hazards for an assortment of serious, even hazardous, physical and psychological well-being conditions, including a subjective decrease. Limitations on the opportunity of development ought to be proportionate and not founded solely on age.
COVID-19, as different irresistible melodies, represents a higher hazard to populaces that live in nearness. This hazard is especially intense in nursing or matured consideration offices, where the infection can spread quickly and has just brought about numerous passings. About 1.5 million older people individuals live in the nursing homes in the US, barring helped living offices and different settings making nearness.
Twenty-three individuals kicked the bucket in a flare-up at an office in Washington State in February and March, and the US Centers for Disease Control detailed 400 additional cases in offices as of April 1. On March 31, wellbeing experts in the Grand East district of France detailed 570 passings of older people in nursing homes.
Older people often end up in nursing homes due to governments' inability to offer adequate social types of assistance for individuals to live freely in the network, approaches that have put millions at included danger of getting the infection as a result of their organization. Governments ought to guarantee the progression of network-based administrations with the goal that individuals don't wind up in organizations without different alternatives.
Expound now on the roles played via care laborers in continuing the lives of the old during that emergency, and who, however dreadful themselves, by and by remain day in and outing inside the bounds of their wards to offer fundamental consideration.
Care supervisor Chang, the woman in charge of the consideration laborers among whom I led my hands-on work, coordinated the change of her ward into a self-sufficient fixed of a unit of care. The passage to her floor is carefully monitored; just fundamental conveyances are permitted, for instance, nourishment and clothing. Since nobody can enter or leave the structure, the flask for the older was transformed into a dozing region for care laborers. Despite the very fact that a lot of consideration laborers have their circle of relatives to require care of, they put that piece of their life under the control of others. Care specialist Lin, whose spouse died at the start of the pandemic, did not have the chance to completely grieve his passing due to incessant understaffing at Sunlight. She came back to figure following the burial service, despite realizing that she not, at now expected to figure at Sunlight to hide her significant other's clinical costs. Lin's arrival says much regarding her promise to her calling, to her colleagues, and to the old she had come to understand so well. My examination with care laborers recommends that it's an enthusiastic association and an awareness of other's expectations that propels them to remain the end of the day in care work. This is often borne out immediately.
Carefully add China is often seen as being grimy and unfortunate, thanks to an excellent extension to its nearby hook up with the realistic consideration required by slight, skilled bodies. Chinese consideration laborers are for the foremost part provincial to urban transients or urban specialists laid far away from previous state-claimed processing plants. In any case, direct consideration is intricate. In any case, its unpredictability goes unrecognized, or maybe disregarded by institutional powers that organize benefits and generalize the old as bodies to chip away at, to the disregard of their social-passionate necessities. As is valid with Sunlight, things which might typically undermine the keenness of care laborers, for instance, the absence of institutional acknowledgment for his or her enthusiastic work, are required to be postponed. Care specialists are currently centered around a shared objective: ensuring the gift assistance of the older. COVID-19 propels care laborers to consider what kind of care is required and the way to offer that care. It fills in as a channel through which the elemental beliefs of care are observed. Care is about common human weakness and our intrinsic association. Care laborers at Sunlight, in their aggregate every minute of everyday endeavors to secure the older, typify this ethic through their consideration. May the respectful regard, they hold of the older in their consideration redound on them and everyone consideration laborers overall who are fighting this pandemic on the bleeding edge!
Like the consideration laborers at Sunlight, the laborers in numerous nations are regarded human life so that we cannot be embarrassed to return clean with the leading edge about ourselves. Salute the spearheading staff who salutes our purposeful endeavors to handle the pandemic in numerous settings around the globe, within the daylight, yet additionally to ensure that veterans are appropriately treated, took care of and washed.
We all hope and pray that the coronavirus will soon be controlled and subdued. And that when the crisis is behind us, that we continue the important work of protecting the elderly and other vulnerable segments of our citizenry.

In this video, BJ and Iovanna discuss that while taking care of others, it is important to remember to take care of yourself.
My wife has been working in elder care since she was 16 years old. She has worked primarily in nursing homes throughout her career and has had the pleasure of taking care of some very wonderful people.
Over the years she has kept a collection of photos and sadly the death and funeral announcements of some of her favorite patients she has taken care of.
One day when she went into work one of the ladies she was taking care of asked her if we had any pets. My wife showed her a couple of pictures of Chucky and Leo.
A couple of days later Mary gave my wife a painting she had made of our pets. The residents of the care facility had an event where they did some painting, this was that painting.
Mary passed away a few years ago but we still proudly display her painting on our wall. She did a wonderful job, May she rest in peace!

Garden Club of North Carolina Inc. grows remarkable garden therapy project at Raleigh’s Gov. Morehead School for the Blind
ST. LOUIS (May 18, 2010)—Enjoying the beauty of a leisurely stroll in a garden on a spring day is something most people take for granted. But, as members of National Garden Clubs across the nation can attest, for many individuals, the sensory delights offered by a garden can add up to much more than a pleasant way to pass the time. In fact, the concept of “garden therapy” as a tool to improve the lives of people of all ages and abilities is gaining ever-wider acceptance. Nowhere is this more apparent than at a well-respected school for visually impaired children in Raleigh, N.C., according to Renee Blaschke, of Smithville, Texas, president of the 200,000-member National Garden Clubs Inc.
Thanks to a cooperative effort launched in 1960 between the Gov. Morehead School for the Blind and the Garden Club of North Carolina Inc., more than 1,000 visually impaired children from across the state have enjoyed the unique experience of an on-site garden sanctuary designed specifically for them. Called the Martha Franck Fragrance Garden, it offers students from kindergarten to grade 12 a nurturing outdoor-learning classroom environment. In addition, the garden is used in the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind’s rehabilitation services for blind and visually impaired adults.
Sara Brooks, NGC Garden Therapy national chairwoman and resident of Whiteville, N.C., says that in keeping with National Garden Clubs’ ongoing garden therapy program, the garden began as a regional project and a committee was appointed by the 10,000-member Garden Club of North Carolina Inc. to plan and implement the space. To date, the committee has raised more than $200,000 and continues in its fundraising efforts to support additional improvements. Perhaps more importantly, local garden club members have supplied innumerable hours of volunteer labor and leadership efforts toward designing, installing, maintaining and “growing” the garden. Plans to develop a tactile garden that will feature statuary and information depicting the history of North Carolina currently are in the works.
The school’s educators say the fragrance garden has proven to be a tremendous asset to students and programs. “It’s vital to provide a safe environment in teaching the visually impaired and to help them experience scent, sound and touch,” says Barbria Bacon, Gov. Morehead School director. “The garden provides students with the confidence to take the risks necessary to develop independent living skills and provides a safe, outdoor experience in which to tackle life’s many challenges.”
Bacon says that the 1.1-acre garden also was designed to appeal to those with multiple physical challenges. Wide brick paths with bull-nosed edges are easily navigated by wheelchair or assistive walking devices and promote self-dependence. The paths lead to four distinct areas-a rose garden, a butterfly garden, a woodland garden and a texture garden—that beckon further exploration. A fountain helps students and visitors isolate and identify sound and direction. Directional signs and the plaques that identify many species of plants and flowers are inscribed in Braille. The recent addition of a culinary garden features herbs and vegetables in raised beds and was created to help cultivate an interest in gardening on vocational and recreational levels.
“Gardeners have long recognized that gardens can play an important role in physical and mental health,” says the NGC’s Blaschke. “Our members across the nation now work with a wide spectrum of hospitals, veterans’ facilities, eldercare programs, mental health institutions, schools and prisons to implement healing garden therapy programs as most appropriate and effective for each facility.”
In addition to the Garden Therapy program, other service projects offered by National Garden Clubs Inc. include Habitat for Humanity Landscaping, Golden Days, Plant It Pink, Blue Star Memorials, school gardening initiatives for children, flower shows, and a host of civic beautification and improvement efforts. Founded in 1929 and headquartered in St. Louis, NGC (www.gardenclub.org) has 200,000 members connected through a vast network of 6,300 local clubs, 50 state clubs, and a National Capital Area club, as well as a sizable group of international affiliates. NGC is the largest volunteer organization of its type in the world.
Martha Franck was inspired to create a garden for the visually impaired after meeting Helen Keller, the noted American author, lecturer and advocate for the visually impaired and disabled, in 1935. The garden originally was installed on the grounds of the Adult Rehabilitation Center for the Blind at Butner, N.C. In 1984, the garden was dismantled and relocated to the campus of the 165-year-old Gov. Morehead School, the eighth-oldest school for the blind in the U.S.

This is how it gets when you have rats that are both old and ill. I have to skin Izzy's veggies for her (try peeling individual pieces of peas, corn, Lima beans, and edamame sometime and you'll see what I mean) cos her teeth and jaws and hands don't work so well with the PT. Then there's morning and evening meds. And the other rats' dinner as well, and making sure the baby food and soy yogurt aren't the same flavors they were a couple days ago. And the Ensure mixed in here and there.
It's a project every night. :D
