Eilean Donan Castle..... das Highlander Schloss
In freudiger Vorfreude auf den nächsten Schottlandurlaub.... wenn es doch nur nicht noch so lang hin wäre....
I normally like to mix up my posted images so that the same subject doesn’t appear together too many times but unfortunately I haven’t been able to get out much lately so today's posting is another view of the famous Eilean Donan Castle.
Taken from the waterside this is a view of castle from the southern perspective. This is another very traditional shot of the building and the causeway but I hope I’ve made enough of a difference to make it enjoyable anyway.
A much more traditional view of the Eilean Donan castle than the last few images I’ve posted. Taken from the waterfront down at the Castle side this location is much easier to get to and so is used more frequently than the hillside views I’ve been using over the past few weeks. One advantage this angle of view has is the ability get more of the castle in reflection on the water and a calm morning gave me the opportunity.

Eilean Donan castle in the late afternoon sunlight, Highlands, Scotland.
The Castle of Eilean Donan is an impressive sight after dark. The lights on the castle are very effective and with nothing else around to dull the impact the illumination is just striking. The colour on the water always seems to provide a perfect contrast to the Orange and Yellow tones on the stone whatever the conditions.
I shot this image from a high elevation in order to catch the reflections of the sky and to see the whole of the causeway but when the light is like this and the water is calm then shooting from ground level can be even more effective. The car park around the castle allows access to the water’s edge, even when the castle is closed, and when things are calm you can get a beautiful reflection. I’m almost sorry I didn’t get a chance to go down castle side that night but I made a choice and here is the result. I hope you enjoy.
This image was taken last summer when I couldn't resist stopping off at this iconic location. The sky was looking moody but the sun was making a brief appearance shedding light on the picturesque castle.
Looking forward to stopping off there again soon.

Taken on a late October's evening as the rain poured down. The light was poor and had to take it under an umbrella to shelter from the elements but we had to move on to the Isle of Skye, so it was a matter of take it or leave it. The walls of the castle are lit by the orange lights as darkness falls.

Whilst travelling back from a wonderful camp/munro trip I noticed the wind had dropped whilst passing the castle, and although it's one of the most photographed castles in Scotland I couldn't resist it either!
Probably in the top 10 castles in the world, the legendary Eilean Donan.
Eilean Donan (Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Donnain) is a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, in the western Highlands of Scotland. A picturesque castle that frequently appears in photographs, film and television. Since the castle's restoration in the early 20th century, a footbridge has connected the island to the mainland.
