At Jurong Eco-Garden in Singapore.

I have difficulty identifying this butterfly.

This picture shows the bottom side of its wings. I also have a picture of the top side of its wings. Unfortunately, the image of the top side which has blue and brown colors and small white spots is not so well focused for it to be posted here.

From the bottom side of the wings, it looks like the Malayan Eggfly. But the top side of the Malayan Eggfly is reddish brown. I am quite familiar with the Malayan Eggfly as I have seen it quite often at the Summit Forest in Jurong Eco-Garden. So I do not think the butterfly here is the Malayan Eggfly.

From pictures in the butterfly guide I have, the Stripped Blue Crow has the same blue color on the top side of its wings. But it also has white stripes on both sides of the wings. I do not see any white stripe on the wings of the butterfly in the picture posted here.

Meanwhile, I have posted the not so well focused image of the top side of the wings at www.iNaturalist.org to see if anyone can identify this butterfly. I will update here if and when I have an answer.

A male Great Eggfly or Blue Moon butterfly. When the wings are closed, the males show a jet black with intricate white markings arranged in a pattern parallel to the edges, while in the female, the markings are the same as in the male, except that the base color is tan brown in place of black.

A strong flyer with females being close mimics of the African Monarch butterfly (Danaus chrysippus). Found in most habitats which include open woodland country and gardens in Africa, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua and Australia.

Thanks to Viv..... for the identification of this butterfly. It's a Hypolimnas bolina, the Great eggfly.

Common Eggfly Butterfly (female)

At the Community Garden in Singapore Chinese Garden.

The butterfly in the picture here is most likely a Jacintha Eggfly which is common in Singapore.

I have posted another picture of the same butterfly at iNaturalist.org to see if anyone can give a more definite identification.

Update. According to a response I received at iNaturalist, the butterfly in the picture is a female Jacintha Eggfly and the Jacintha Eggfly is a subspecies of the Great Eggfly.

Varied Eggfly butterfly resting. For 'Smile on Saturday', theme: Insects and Co

They are insects in the macrolepidopteran clade Rhopalocera from the order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. Adult butterflies have large, often brightly coloured wings, and conspicuous, fluttering flight. Butterflies have the typical four-stage insect life cycle. Winged adults lay eggs on the food plant on which their larvae, known as caterpillars, will feed. The caterpillars grow, sometimes very rapidly, and when fully developed, pupate in a chrysalis. When metamorphosis is complete, the pupal skin splits, the adult insect climbs out, and after its wings have expanded and dried, it flies off. Some butterflies, especially in the tropics, have several generations in a year, while others have a single generation, and a few in cold locations may take several years to pass through their entire life cycle. Butterflies are often polymorphic, and many species make use of camouflage, mimicry and aposematism to evade their predators. Some, like the monarch and the painted lady, migrate over long distances. Many butterflies are attacked by parasites or parasitoids, including wasps, protozoans, flies, and other invertebrates, or are preyed upon by other organisms. 6453

Hypolimnas bolina, the great eggfly, common eggfly or in New Zealand the blue moon butterfly is a species of nymphalid butterfly found from Madagascar to Asia and Australia. H. bolina is a black-bodied butterfly with a wingspan of about 70–85 millimetres. The species has a high degree of sexual dimorphism. The female is mimetic with multiple morphs. The male's upperside of the wings is jet black, offset with three pairs of white spots, two on the forewing and one on the hindwing. These spots are surrounded by purple iridescence. In addition, the upperside of the hindwing bears a series of small white dots. The female's upperside of the wings of the female is a brownish black and does not have any spots like those of the male. The edges bear white markings which are similar to those of the common Indian crow. 31615

The great pretender!

Hypolimnas misippus, the Danaid eggfly, mimic, or diadem, is a widespread species of nymphalid butterfly. It is well known for polymorphism and mimicry. Males are blackish with distinctive white spots that are fringed in blue. Females are in multiple forms that include male-like forms while others closely resemble the toxic butterflies Danaus chrysippus and Danaus plexippus.

The females mimic (in appearance) the similar-sized Plain Tiger, a toxic butterfly with the toxic Milkweed as its host plant. The vibrant colours of the Plain Tiger advertise its unpalatable nature to predators around, so the Danaid female sends out the same signal, regardless of it not being toxic

To aid this behaviour, the females also sometimes tend to move with plain tiger butterflies. There are very minute differences in appearance of the two butterflies.
