No 'out of the box thinking' or b&w for me this week. I decided to keep it simple and took a picture of 'just eggs' instead! :)

HMM everybody! Enjoy all the eggcelent shots this week!

Thanks for all the views, faves and comments! They are much appreciated!

Week No. 13: Eggcelent

Happy Easter to all.

We've been put into lockdown due to new Covid spread in the community after we've done so well. This will be reassessed Thursday night (before the start of the Easter break) and we could find the Easter Bunny is our of a job if the lockdown is extended.

Day 29 of the 366 Photo Challenge.

Not eggsactly what I set out to do tonight. It certainly wasn't eggciting and the not so eggcelent results didn't leave me eggstatic. All yolking aside I scrambled for some fresh ideas and hatched a cracking plan.

At least I wasn't too chicken to try this and I'll not be shell shocked if you poach my idea. You're eggnoring me now - aren't you... :)

I reckon everyone and his dog will be taking photo's of potatoes so I thought I would corner the market in egg photos.

Initially my idea was take a photo of an egg lit from below by a flash, I thought it may show up the yolk within the shell - it doesn't!

What I tried: get a speedlight, mask the speedlight with something with a hole in it you can set an egg on, I used a small metal weight from a dumbbell but you could get a bit of card and cut a hole in it slightly smaller than a toilet roll tube, tape a toilet roll tube over the hole, place it over the top of a speedlight pointing upwards and place an egg on top. Fire the flash at full power, flip the egg over and fire again then splice the photo's together in Photoshop to create a whole egg on a black background lit from the inside.

You do get the egg glowing like a ball of lava with 'hot' spots on it which is quite funky but I found the splicing of the photo's to create a whole egg too much for me so gave up after far too much time! The intensity of the light falls off far too quickly inside the egg and the pointy bits end up quite a bit darker the rest - I tried various techniques to mask and blend the two images - gradient feathering, auto blend layers, adjusting opacity and brightness etc but the change from one image to another was far too obvious in all attempts - more practice and research needed.

If you check my photostream you will see an example that worked more or less perfectly using a layer mask and gradient tool to blend the images, however in this one while the egg was still lit from inside via the speedlight the on camera flash also fired to light the shell so giving it a more even colour tone that made it much easier to blend.

Lessons learned: loads of new techniques in Photoshop that I'll forget by tomorrow and now that I think of it it would probably be easier to cut an egg shaped hole in cardboard and fashion an egg shaped stand out of a strip of card and sellotape this onto the base so the egg can be laid on it's side over the speedlight without the stand being seen - then there would be no need to blend to photos together to get the whole egg. Wish I'd thought of that 3 hours ago!!!

Day 42 / 180

This photo was inspired by my good friend Chan and his "eggcelence"! The concept doesn't necessarily have anything to do with him, but this photograph does and it's something I can't eggactly eggsplain. You'd just have to know the guy.

Hope you enjoy this photo!

It's rather eggcelent that nature provides so many interesting ways to create eggciting new life.

not really sure where the inspiration came from with this photo or why i even thought to do it. but i will say this.. EW. That is not a real egg. I hate eggs.

After fame and fortune...

.... uh.... maybe not.

After being exposed to the internet and being despised by other eggs who consider his actions undignifying for a true honorable egg... comes Eggbert's first paternity test!

So far Eggbert's PR advisors refused to comment on the case but an inside source has assured us that Eggna Rock and Eggbert had indeed dated for a few weeks.

Eggna's father, the renowned family law attorney Gregg Rock, refuse to give us an official statement, only saying that "The baby looks eggxactly like him! Plus, we have eggcelent reasons to believe the paternity test will crack this case and eggspose Eggbert for the deviled egg he truly is. He will be totally fried."

Meanwhile rumours of offers for Eggna Rock to be part of a reality show as well as to pose for an adult meggazine are starting to spread....
