It soars effortless in the sky and is a beauty to watch. The black kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors. It is thought to be the world's most abundant species of Accipitridae, although some populations have experienced dramatic declines or fluctuations. Current global population estimates run up to 6 million individuals. Unlike others of the group, black kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend a lot of time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food. Their angled wing and distinctive forked tail make them easy to identify. They are also vociferous with a shrill whinnying call. This kite is widely distributed through the temperate and tropical parts of Eurasia and parts of Australasia and Oceania, with the temperate region populations tending to be migratory. Several subspecies are recognized and formerly had their own English names. The European populations are small, but the South Asian population is very large. 16024

Wednesday was a beautiful sunny and warm day for a drive to the Lake; a perfect time to take a leisurely walk along the lake shore, free from the hustle and bustle of typical weekend crowds.

Two White Swans Floated effortlessly on the icy cold water of Lake Ontario; carried this way and that.by the currents constant ebb and flow.

Gliding effortlessly into the wind, a mōlī makes a low pass over a beach on the north shore of Oahu. It will turn out to sea and wander for thousands of miles over the Pacific using its remarkable olfactory acuity to locate surface forage at upwelling sites. Expending very little energy on flight, this mōlī, or Laysan albatross, efficiently uses dynamic soaring to skim the water, rising on the wind and descending forward by gravity acceleration. Bones lock into position requiring no muscle to keep the six foot wing span extended.

This is a line from Ted Hughes' poem the hawk in the rain. Beautifully written about unmistakably a Kestrel, which is a falcon not a hawk. But I think we can forgive Ted Hughes a little poetic licence.

Nobody really knows why but Kestrels have been declining in Britain over the last twenty years, and more especially in Scotland. I don't seem to see as many hovering by road verges as I used to. I photographed this one near Digley Reservoir in the Peak District National Park.
