i have spent most of my life taking care of other people. it's what i do. i'm the responsible one. i'm the one who makes sure people have what they need. i'm the one who worries about other people. i'm the one who buys the christmas presents. i'm the one who makes sure the project gets done. i'm the one who made sure mommy had clean sheets. i'm the one who made sure daddy didn't crash into the guardrail.
a couple of years ago, i finally realized that i don't have to be my parents' parent anymore. and it took between now and then to realize that the only person, in fact, i DO have to take care of is... me.
and i have done a piss-poor job of that.
until today.
this morning, i went into work and gave my two weeks' notice. i don't want to say i "quit," cos that word has such an air of failure about it, but that's what i did. but i didn't walk out in a huff, and i didn't take this job and shove it. i adore the people i work with, and i'll miss them, terribly. i'll miss the commute down the river. i'll miss seeing my train-friend bob every morning. i'll miss my daily dose of grand central. i'll miss a lot of things... but it took a busted knee, a the bizarre unnamed virus, three bouts of pneumonia, and three visits to the hospital -- all since i started commuting to manhattan last may -- to convince me that i need to change my life.
and starting today, i am doing just that.
what's next? first and foremost, more rest. then? honestly? the sky's the limit. i want to try and sell photographs. i want to do more voiceover work. i want to paint. i want to pick up some freelance editing. i want to get my hands dirty in the garden. i want to reconnect with my husband, my family, my friends, my house, my town, my camera, myself.

I have been searching and thinking of names all afternoon but can't think of anything fitting! Bijou and Pom are the ones sticking in my head.
This wig isn't her proper one. I have ordered several wigs for her.
I start work on Monday again so won't be able to take photos during the week :( No more Mawi spam. *sigh*.

One of the larger falcons, the Peregrine is a symbol of survival against the odds, these being persecution and pesticide poisoning that threatened it with extinction, Now it has made a strong comeback, in the UK, it is more common than it has ever been, although parts of its fomer range remain unoccupied, As with most falcons and hawks, females are considerbly larger than males, Pairs often remain together for long periods, soaring over nesting cliffs, Peregrines look dark against the sky, but a close view reveals black, white, and yellow adding sharp contrast to the over all grey,
Occurrence - Widespread but scarce, breeding through Scandinavia, N and W Great Britain, Spain, Portugal, Alps, Italy, and Balkans, in hills and coasts with cliffs, increasingly in cities, Present all year, some wandering in winter,
Voice ;- Loud, raucous calls at nest include throaty haak-haak-haak and whining kee-keee-eeeeee and wheeee-ip ,
Nesting ;- On broad ledge or earthy scrape on cliff, in quarry, or more rarely on building or on flatter ground, 2 - 4 eggs, 1 brood, March - June,
Feeding ;- Kills birds of sizes ranging from thrush to pigeon or grouse, sometimes larger, often rising to take them from beneath, chasing in level flight, or stooping from great height,

A fairly large but relatively lightweight bird of prey, the African Harrier Hawk has a distinctive small, pointed head, with a patch of naked yellow skin on the face which flushes red when the bird is excited. On the top of the head is a crest of feathers, which may be raised or lowered. The plumage is mainly grey, with neat black and white barring on the abdomen and thighs, though this is absent in some individuals. The wings are long and rounded, with distinct, broad black ends to the flight feathers, and the tail is black and relatively long, with a clear white or grey central band. Male and female African harrier-hawks are similar in appearance, though the female may be slightly larger than the male, while juveniles have brown plumage, blackish facial skin, a brown tail with four darker brown bars, and variable amounts of whitish, reddish-brown or dark bars or streaks on the abdomen. Adult plumage is not attained until about the third year). Two subspecies of African harrier-hawk are recognised: Polyboroides typus typus and Polyboroides typus pectoralis, the latter being smaller and darker, with more barring on the underparts. The African harrier-hawk is a fairly silent bird, but in the breeding season gives a long, plaintive su-eeeeee-oo call, as well as a highhweep-hweek-hweep near the nest.

We linked paws and danced around the snowdrops. Then the others all settled down, giggling and chatting, while Pistachio watched over them.
But I longed for the peace and quiet and sneaked down the steep bank, thinking about the spot Maisie found during her Lupercalia adventure two weeks ago.
I saw the perfect place. It was there beside a fern overlooking the river. I sat back, surrounded with snowdrops, listening to the gentle river while the fragrant flowers tickled my nose. I felt like I was in a world of my own. Everything else just a blur in the distance. If only it was this peaceful all the time.
Then Cashew blundered through. From the look in his eyes I knew he was about to jump out in hope of scaring me. But in the last moment he stumbled over a twig and went flying.
'Eeeeee!' Cashew cried, waving his paws in the air.
I managed to grab him before he fell further. He scrambled back up and joined me in the snowdrops. I sighed. The noise had alerted the others.
'Are you all right down there?' Pistachio called.
'Yes,' I said. 'Just Cashew being Cashew.'
I heard them giggle, but they didn't come down to check on us. Cashew sat humming the five-six-four-one song. Thankfully it was in time with the flowing river.
'That Child in Time song isn't really five six four one though, is it,' Cashew whispered. He hummed the four notes to prove his point.
It had the four notes in it though. I hummed the melody myself. 'It's actually five six five six four five one,' I said.
'But we still do not know who the Child in Time is. So how are they supposed to sing it?' Cashew looked up to where the others played. 'Do you think it's Ivy?'
'I did wonder, but I don't think she is,' I said. 'I think the Child in Time is the song and the seagull just got the message muddled up. You know how it is.'
'Like when Maisie and Seitan found Moonlight after following those clues about the giant wolf that was really a little wolf. And the wolf didn't eat the doll. The wolf was the doll,' Cashew said.
'I think Moonlight was our Lupercalia gift,' I said, pondering. 'Anyway, we still do not know the starting color of the song. What the humans call the key. The song is purple and blue with orange bits, but there's still the color that carries them.'
'And the color has to match purple and blue and orange,' Cashew said, gazing across the river.
Just then Shishka's excited voice cried out from the top of the slope. The others were playing Hide and Seek when a dog out walking his human jogged by. The dog let out a playful woof, tail wagging in time to his trot.
It was also in time with our song.
'Everywhere seems to be in time now,' said Cashew.
'That's probably why it's the Child in Time,' I said.
'Yes, it is,' the dog woofed. 'And you're in the wrong place. The snowdrops are passing and the camellias and daffodils are rising. The Child in Time will sing under the tree.'
'We've seen the daffodils,' said Cashew.
I knew what the dog meant. Of course we were in the wrong place. Every magical creature of the forest must be gathering there by now. Immediately I grabbed Cashew's paw and ran up the slope. The others were waiting, their eyes shining bright.
'I know where we have to go, and I know what the start color is,' Labneh said.
'The camellia tree!' we all said together. 'That's where the Child in Time will sing!'
