At the m4Ed4Dev Lecture Series at USAID, David Stevenson of Wireless Generation was asked which form factor he thought worked the best for classroom teachers to use in lessons and child assessment.

His response: The 7-inch tablet form factor is perfect for classroom educators. The screen is big enough for quick touchpad input and fast content reading, but small enough not to be intrusive in the teacher-child interaction

In the footsteps of the OLPC XO and Intel's Classmate Laptop, here's a concept sketch of an integrated laptop and PDA. The touchscreen of the PDA would double as a touchpad for the laptop when docked (otherwise a trackball in the dock could be used instead). The capabilities built into the PDA could also be used to augment those of the laptop - e.g. built-in microphone, speakers, possibly even camera or even processor; or the PDA screen could provide "soft keys" for extending the capability of the laptop.

Kasis Basisc School Senior Teacher, Sister Kanyimbo with Members of Parliament and Press walking to a grade one class.

A total of seven Members of Parliament from the "Committee on Education, Science & Technology" visited two iSchool pilot schools on Thursday, July 17, 2014 to interact with the children, observe how the ZEduPad educational tablets are being used in schools and gain a practical perspective on the application of the iSchool system, its adaptability and the inherent value it offers for schools that are using it.

iSchool is a complete blended eLearning solution that covers the entire Zambian primary school curriculum. It provides detailed lesson plans for teachers (some 5,000 in total) guiding them towards interactive enquiry-based learning. For students, there are thousands of fun, colourful, inetractive, multi-media lessons, available in English and for early grades in 8 local languages (Bemba, Tonga, Luvale, Lunda, Kaonde, Lusaka Nyanja, Nyanja and Lozi).

iSchool uses a low-cost, high-quality, low-power called the ZEduPad tablet which is pre-loaded with all the iSchool learning content and requires no internet connection to access lessons. It can be run off solar power thereby making it possible for schools in the deep rural areas of Zambia and Africa to use it for their learning.

Our prescriptive method of teaching will ensure that teachers, even untrained teachers, can raise their students to international levels of learning.

The detailed lesson plans and ideas for every lesson, make class and syllabus management easier for all teachers, no matter their qualification and level of experience, and also encourages the teacher and learners to be able to use things from their surroundings to plan for and engage in the learning process.

Ultimately, our goal is not only to teach a child but to instill a love of learning that will stay with a child as they grow and take their place in life. Developing or cultivating a passion in children is important because children who develop a love of learning at an early age continue the process throughout their lives and are generally more capable, more adept and more successful than those who don't.

A very exciting day for us! Last night #iSchool Zambia was awarded the Silver award at the AAPAM Awards in Morocco as Zambia’s entrant. The awards recognize persons and institutions in the public service that have made outstanding contributions in the field of Public Administration and Management in Africa. They also aim to set standards of excellence for others to aspire and enhance the image of public sector as a worthy domain for career pursuits.

Participants in our #edutech workshop on Design Thinking explored how the process couples with tech startup strategies to provide a robust means to implement innovations in school, and also saw how these decision-making tools transfer to planning genuinely student-led, student-owned learning.

Immediately useful but challenging long-term status quos, the feedback from our workshop was fantastic, showing that most people were leaving with pragmatic next steps in both school leadership and lesson-by-lesson decisions.
