Hedgehog, magpies and squirrel: Animal interaction in slow motion (part I). It is much easier to notice the interaction between animals when watched in slow motion. This is possible because Sony FDR-X1000V records in 120fps HD. Hyvinkää, Finland. 19.7.2017

The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, are a natural phenomenon that adorns the night sky above the polar regions. It occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth's magnetic field. As these particles enter the atmosphere and collide with gas molecules such as oxygen and nitrogen, they create a spectacular display of colors. The colors of the aurora can range from green to pink, purple, and sometimes even red. These hues depend on the type of gas particles involved in the collisions and the altitude at which these interactions occur in the atmosphere. For many indigenous peoples, like the Sami in Lapland, the northern lights are more than just a natural spectacle; they hold spiritual significance and are steeped in myths and legends. They are seen as messages from ancestors, signs of good fortune, or even as dances of the spirits of the north. Witnessing the northern lights is an unforgettable experience that draws countless travelers to the northern regions each year. The best time to see the aurora is from September to March, when nights are long and dark, and the chances of clear skies are higher. Prime locations to view the northern lights include Scandinavia, Iceland, Alaska, Canada, and parts of Russia.

At the Arktikum, a museum and science center in Rovaniemi, Finland, visitors can immerse themselves in a captivating video showcasing the phenomenon of the northern lights. This video offers a mesmerizing experience, depicting the enchanting night sky above the Arctic regions where colorful curtains of light dance and sway. Personally, I haven't had the opportunity to witness the northern lights in all their glory firsthand. However, through stories and visuals presented at places like the Arktikum, I can imagine how breathtaking and awe-inspiring it must be to witness this natural spectacle. The blend of scientific knowledge and cultural significance associated with such an experience makes it an extraordinary and unforgettable journey for every visitor.

Juvenile squirrels swift reaction to hedgehog. Today was the second time that our young squirrel visited evening peanuts and it was the first time to encounter hedgehogs near peanuts. Young squirrel still has some things to learn to cope with hedgehogs. Hyvinkää, Finland. 30.7.2017

Magpie landing from ground level in slow motion. This one was recorded from ground level with Sony FDR-X1000V action camera. The original cut in realtime is 14 second and is here saved in slow motion with 25% speed. Hyvinkää, Finland. 22.7.2017

Red squirrel and hedgehog: we are giants. This is the absolute limit in closeness that Olympus Tough TG-5 can handle. Hyvinkää, Finland. 13.7.2017.

Hedgehog, red squirrel and common chaffinch: we are huge. This is the limit how close you can get with Olympus Tough TG-5. Hyvinkää, Finland. 13.7.2017

Juvenile hedgehogs have a little fight. As the bigger hedgehogs have left to explore some other places the smaller juvenile hedgehogs have been recent visitors in our backyard. These two are less than 20 centimetres long and the smallest (not shown here) is probably less than 15 cm. I was actually observing hedgehogs less than a metre away. I was prepairing my camera remote control and then the first hedgehog came so I was left sitting and watching as my movement would have scared these hedgehogs away. Actually hedgehogs react more to noises than movements. I was quite lucky to get this video as it was rapidly getting darker and in half an hour it was too dark for filming videos with Olympus TOUGH TG-5. Hyvinkää, Finland. 15.8.2017.

Hedgehog: How spikes work. Nice to see hedgehogs spikes at close range. This is the limit that Olympus TOUGH TG-5 can provide. Nice one for compact camera. Also my videos are converted to 30 fps HD, but originals are recorded 120fps HD. Now it would be time for me to learn to produce slowmotion from faster action!

Squirrel and magpies in slow motion (part I). It is easier to see how wild animals interact in slow motion. Original was filmed with Sony FDR-X1000V 120fps HD. The speed is reduced to 25%. Hyvinkää, Finland. 19.7.2017

Hedgehog, magpies and squirrel: Animal interaction in slow motion (part II). It is much easier to notice the interaction between animals when watched in slow motion. This is possible because Sony FDR-X1000V records in 120fps HD. Hyvinkää, Finland. 19.7.2017

Hedgehog scratching in slow motion. I managed to reduce the speed of original 120fps HD Sony FDR-X1000V video to 25% in Adobe Premiere. Nice one to see more clearly what happens.

Hedgehogs fighting and drinking and squirrel just eating all the time. It is quite amazing to realize how much action is going on in one ordinary backyard during evenings. This is just over two minutes long and you don't even see most of the action from this perspective. No need for wild animals to watch reality-tv shows! Hyvinkää, Finland. 19.7.2017.

Hedgehog to red squirrel: You don't really want to mess with me, do you? (long version). I want to remark that these animals are 100% wild animals and behave as such. I don't direct their behaviour in any way and they don't really harm themselves in my videos. I just observe and take videos and photos what they do in our backyard. Hyvinkää, Finland. 10.7.2017.

Hedgehogs so close you can hear their spikes. I don't know how it feels like to be spiked, but at least now I know how it sounds. No harm for anybody. Sony XDR-X1000V has very round shapes of plastic. Hyvinkää, Finland. 15.7.2017.

Squirrel as close as it gets and some hedgehogs too. Today it was sunny and squirrel got very close to camera. Four hedgehogs visited also although not all in this video. Hyvinkää, Finland. 14.7.2017

Fighting hedgehogs (Who is the idiot that placed the other camera?). Yes you can place the cameras too close, but at least got this filmed. Hyvinkää, Finland. 14.7.2017

Hedgehogs and stationary cameras. This video shows accidentally how stationary cameras Olympus Tough TG-5 and Sony FDR-X1000V were placed very close to action. Olympus with shorter angle should have been a little further or maybe the best setup would have been to reverse the camera positions. This video was shot with handheld Nikon D610 through 3xwindow glass. It would make better quality to film outside but I don't want to familiarize the wild animals with human too much. They are not pets and should not become one.

Fighting hedgehogs on ground level. Filmed stationary on ground level with Sony FDR-X1000V action camera.

Juvenile squirrel's another encounter with hedgehogs. Hyvinkää, Finland. 30.7.2017

Fighting hedgehogs from ground level. Today I got new Olympus Tough TG-5 camera, so I had to try to use it remotely with my iPhone. That way I could at the same time shoot video with Nikon D610 and Nikkor 28-300mm behind window glass. Although this time the hedgehogs were so quick that I didn't even got the Olympus running.

Fringilla coelebs. I tried for the first time to place my Sony FDR-X1000V action camera on ground level and see what happens. This is what almost instantly happened... It seems quite good camera for this purpose. Interesting to see how it compares to Olympus Tough TG-5 which was filming at the same time from different angle. Hopefully I get some interesting material during next few days.

Hedgehog, squirrel, magpie and special quest in action cam. Unfortunately videos are cut to 3 mins so special quest is seen in video named Fringilla coelebs or in longer version which I add to my YouTube channel.

Encounter of three hedgehogs - two different perspectives and cameras. Today I got my new Olympus Tough TG-5 camera so I had to try to use it remotely with my iPhone. Now I had a chance to take videos with two different cameras and perspectives at the same time! The first part is filmed (as usual) through 3 times window glass with Nikon D610 and Nikkor 28-300mm at or near 300mm (I silenced the sound which was from inside). The second part is filmed with Olympus Tough TG-5 stationary from ground level started and viewed (obviously In this case I didn't have time to watch after starting the video) from iPhone. Nice to view the same encounter from two very different perspectives.

Hedgehogs and magpie: as close as it gets. Seen from stationary Sony FDR-X1000V action camera. Hyvinkää, Finland. 15.7.2017

Crow and red squirrel: Three different cameras and perspectives. I used for the first time three cameras at the same time to shoot videos. This can be quite easily be done (of course it is hard to get any decent material for all cameras at the same time) by placing two stationary cameras at ground level and shooting one camera handheld. If you place the cameras in good positions and have some luck you can have excelent material with this technique. This was my first try. The cameras use were Olympus Tough TG-5, Sony FDR-X1000V and Nikon D610 (handheld through 3xwindow glass, Nikkor 28-300mm). I have to try this technique again in the following days.
