One of the first cars I saw this morning was this really spiffy looking Edsel. You don't see many at car shows. The next thing I noticed was the hood ornament. Not spectacular, but unique - it's for an Edsel. And yes, a picture of the car will come later.

This car show is my favorite. They have some really beautiful cars. And, for a change, not one Chevy Bel-Air!!! Here are pictures from all years.

I began this series with a shot of an Edsel. This is the same car, but I had to show you the rear end of it. Now cars sure did have some kind of design back in the late 50s.

The name Edsel actually has something to do with with the design of the spare on the back bumper. Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford had travelled to Europe in the late 1930's and was impressed with how classy some of the cars looked. When he returned he worked with his Designer and others toalter what had been a successful Lincoln Zepher to come up with the new 1939 Lincoln Continental, which had the spare mounted on the back of the car. It was an instant hit.

A really great article on the whole store for anyone interested can be found here... corporate.ford.com/articles/history/lincoln-continental-o...

It is not that long of a read and actually very interesting even if you are not a big fan of cars.

Harbor Springs, Michigan. Check out the location of the push button gear selector and the rotating speedometer. The odometer says 99359 which is a pretty substantial number of miles for a car of that era, particularly one that is now in show condition. Sorry about all the glare.

The Three Ed's, like they were lined up on the lot outside the showroom! From my first trip to Pearsonville, March of 2009. I snuck into this abandoned junkyard, across country in the middle of the night, alone, spending most of the evening slack jawed at all the amazing Detroit Iron to shoot. I ended up getting to know the Pearson family, eventually gaining permission to hold workshops in the yard. I ended up spending 29 nights there over the next couple of years, until they crushed 3/4 of the yard for scrap, and the rest was consolidated into a small, fenced yard. Yeah, these the cars were saved . . . and may still be sitting in the same spot . . .

Why this old thing today? The other day I gave a friend a large, framed print of this I had laying around for his office. I visited him this morning and sold his co-worker, a former '59 Edsel owner, another print of this image, only to come home and find my friend and former student Jody Miller had posted her "3 Ed's" image on Facebook today. Wow! It's clearly a Three Ed's Kismet kinda day, so here is a fresh mix down of the original raw file, using 2014-style techniques to save a severely underexposed original file. Looks way better than the one from '09. Full moon, 4 minutes, f/11, iso 100, Canon 20D.

This is the grill of an old 1950s Edsel, considered one of Ford's greatest flops. Filled with all sorts of cool if somewhat directionless technology, Ford's epic ad campaign created some confusion among car buyers, who didn't really understand this strange looking, strangely named car. And an economic recession kicked it to the curb, causing Ford executives to pull the plug on the Edsel at the end of 1959. Less than 10,000 Edsels were manufactured, and now, one in good shape is considered a valuable collector's item.

I used a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device to illuminate the scene while the camera shutter was open in this long exposure photo. Photographed with my friends Ron and Dave on a windy December night near the full moon.

Personally I adore it.

OSU 778 was new in 1959 and taxed for the first time in the UK in 1989 - so maybe this was when it was imported from the USA?.
