ICH BIN WAS DU VERGESSEN HAST

I AM WHAT YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN

Homage to the silent film

presented by Dieter Rita Scholl (Berlin) as part of the Women's March 2016

On the piano: Regina Haffner

A tart and charming musical homage to silent film with amusing biographies and scandals. The strengths and weaknesses of the stars of the time such as ASTA NIELSEN, ALLA NAZIMOVA, POLA NEGRI, GLORIA SWANSON, JEAN HARLOW, TALLULAH BANKHEAD, LOUISE BROOKS, GRETA GARBO, MARION DAVIES and JOAN CRAWFORD are revealed.

Dita Rita Scholl also deals with the transition from STUMM FILM to SOUND FILM, which meant the end of the career for many at that time. The topic of the "cast couch", which played a major role in the film business, is also covered in detail. The sexual orientation of the stars and starlets is not neglected either!

Chansons by: Zarah Leander, Marlene Dietrich, Claire Waldoff, Edith Piaf, Ingrid Caven, Romy Schneider, Milva.

The boundless cosmos is a blank heavenly book with numerous volumes, over thousands of years mankind has only guessed two or three words.

Édith Piaf (1915–1963) is a cultural icon and is universally regarded as France's greatest popular singer. Her ballads, like La Vie en rose (1946) and Non, je ne regrette rien (1960), reflected her life. She appeared sporadically in films.

♪♫♪♫ Edith Piaf - Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) ♪♫♪♫

The falling leaves

Drift by the window

The autumn leaves

All red and gold

I see your lips

The summer kisses

The sunburned hands

I used to hold.

Since you went away

The days grow long...

And soon I'll hear

Old winter songs

But I miss you most of all

My darling, when autumn leaves start to fall...

C'est une chanson

Qui nous ressemble

Toi qui m'aimais

Et je t'aimais

Nous vivions tous les deux ensemble

Tou qui m'aimais

Moi qui t'aimais

Mais la vie sépare

Ceux qui s'aiment

Tout doucement

Sans faire de bruit

Et la mer efface sur le sable

Les pas des amants désunis.

Since you went away

The days grow long...

And soon I'll hear

Old winter songs

But I miss you most of all

My darling, when autumn leaves start to fall...

The Packard Caribbean was available only as a convertible or as a 2-door hardtop.

In 1954 Packard merged with Studebaker. 1956 was the last year real Packards were built.

This specific Caribbean was once owned by the French singer Edith Piaf.

« Sur les marches de cette maison naquit le 19 Décembre 1915 dans le plus grand dénuement EDITH PIAF dont la voix, plus tard, devait bouleverser le monde ».

As the legend goes, Edith Piaf was born in a doorway at 72 rue de Belleville in the 20th arrondissement on 19 December 1915, the daughter of a busker and a cafe singer. Above the cracked marble doorstep is a plaque that says her voice would go on to touch the world, which is pretty much what happened. But first she sang at a tiny cafe down the street, Aux Folies, an art-deco relic with cubist mosaics, swirls of neon lettering above its zinc counter, and iron pillars plastered with handbills for shows dating back to the 1920s.

Edith Piaf (Édith Giovanna Gassion, 19 December 1915 – 10 October 1963) was a French vocalist, songwriter, cabaret performer and film actress noted as France's national chanteuse and one of the country's most widely known international stars.

Piaf's music was often autobiographical and she specialized in chanson and torch ballads about love, loss and sorrow.

Years of alcohol abuse alongside copious amounts of medications, initially for arthritic pain and later insomnia, took their toll on Piaf's health. A series of car accidents only exacerbated her addictions and she eventually underwent a series of surgeries for a stomach ulcer in 1959. Coupled with a deteriorating liver and the need for a blood transfusion, by 1962 she had lost a significant amount of weight, reaching a low of 30 kg (66 pounds). Drifting in and out of consciousness for several months, she died of liver cancer aged 47 at her villa in Plascassier (Grasse), on the French Riviera, on 10 October 1963, the day before filmmaker and friend Jean Cocteau died. Her last words were "Every damn thing you do in this life, you have to pay for."

She is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris next to her daughter Marcelle, where her grave is among the most visited. Buried in the same grave are her father, Louis-Alphonse Gassion, and Théo (Lamboukas) Sarapo. The name inscribed at the foot of the tombstone is Famille Gassion-Piaf. Her name is engraved on the side as Madame Lamboukas dite Édith Piaf.

Huang Xiang is considered to be one of the greatest poets of 20th century China and a master calligrapher.

Huang Xiang spent over twelve years in Chinese prisons and endured much suffering for writing his lyrical, free-spirited poetry and for his advocacy of human rights in China. His inspiring story has been the subject of an award winning PBS documentary and his heroic pursuit for freedom and democracy in China has been documented in the book, 'Coming Alive; China After Mao'. He has been described as a 'poet on fire' a human torch who burns as a lamp of freedom and enlightenment. Huang Xiang's poetry and calligraphy is internationally recognized and he has performed for crowds numbering in the thousands.

He feels that the art he creates with William Rock is, "a highly creative collaboration, something that hasn't been done before." Fifteen of his books have been published in several languages. Huang Xiang's mission today is to use art to build a bridge between East and West and to promote a universal humanity. After completing a residency with the City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, Huang Xiang and his wife, the writer, Zhang Ling, live in New York City. Huang Xiang returned to visit China for the first time in eleven years to visit family and friends in April 2008.

William Rock is both a citizen of Ireland and the U.S. He studied drawing at The California Art Institute and taught himself to paint and sculpt by travelling to museums around the world. He has been immersed in Eastern thought and practice for fifteen years, studying and teaching with Tibetan and Chinese monks. In 2006 his 'transcendent' paintings inspired a month long arts celebration held in the USA entitled 'Spirit Unfolding'. William Rock's art has been displayed in museums in California and Pennsylvania and he has taught and spoken extensively on the nature of creativity, mysticism and art. William Rock has been instrumental in producing several cultural events that promote and embrace art as a connective dialogue for humanity.

Chansons by: Zarah Leander, Marlene Dietrich, Claire Waldoff, Edith Piaf, Ingrid Caven, Romy Schneider, Milva.

ICH BIN WAS DU VERGESSEN HAST

Egon Schiele

Let us restore our lost naked men,

Let us restore our naked women,

Let us restore our lost naked cosmos.

Masculinity and femininity belong to the naked wind, water, atmosphere and earth;

Gender is the moving world and the world's motion.

What does nature's essence have that merits continuing to hide

its meaning from us?

What seduces me is just my expansive ambition in the prime of manhood.

St.Vincent is still perched over the door on 23rd street. He has witnessed a lot. On September 20, 1952 he witnessed the wedding of Edith Piaf, with Marlena Dietrich as her maid of honor. President Charles de Gaulle of France attend re-dedication of the World War I memorial after World War II when the names of those who died in the second war were added to the names of the members of the Lafayette Squadron and other Americans who had died fighting for France. He witnessed black French speaking Catholics treated with respect when that was not the norm in other R.C. churches in the city.

Hopefully they will blindfold him before he is pushed from his perch.

A surprising aspect of La Vie en Rose is the role that knitting plays in the movie. Not knowing much about Edith, I scoured for photos of her knitting.

i admire her all the more for knitting!

Non! Rien de rien …

Non ! Je ne regrette rien

Ni le bien qu’on m’a fait

Ni le mal tout ça m’est bien égal !

Non ! Rien de rien …

Non ! Je ne regrette rien…

C’est payé, balayé, oublié

Je me fous du passé!

Avec mes souvenirs

J’ai allumé le feu

Mes chagrins, mes plaisirs

Je n’ai plus besoin d’eux !

Balayés les amours

Et tous leurs trémolos

Balayés pour toujours

Je repars à zéro …

I love Edith Piaf.

A two-legged beast under a vast, starry sky asks:

“Who am I?”

Apart from me, what is the stretching world?

What is the living me? What is the dead me?

----- When I demand answers of myself,

I do not trust at all my own brain, my nerves or retinas.

I am one of Nature’s forms, and also give forms to Nature.

From outside myself I view my idea or my mental images;

I unfold my inner designs with various external forms.

I present my images to the outer world, as I am the collector and exhibitor of uncountable images;

I create an artistic miracle of a million images.

(Excerpt from Huang Xiang “READING NOTES LEFT ON A STAR—Cosmic Emotions, translated by Fu Zhengming in Sweden.)

Thanks to artist Lie Fhung for this sneak peek at one of the submissions to her Universal Scrapbook, the public participation part of her Dream Archives art installation, sponsored by Kolo. Dream Archives and the Universal Scrapbook will exhibit internationally, beginning in November 2009 at SIGIarts Gallery in Jakarta.

For info about participating go here:

koloist.com/index.php/2009/08/12/have-you-added-your-drea...

Lie Fhung:

"This is the digital mock-up of another page of the Universal Scrapbook. The person asked to be posted anonymously; she emailed me a quote from Edith Piaf's song (I think it is from 'Padam Padam') with "Je t'aime" heading on it and mentioned about an old sad love story in Paris. I happened to have some photos of the Eiffel Tower that I took during my trip in 2006 so this is what I came up with. I combined two photos together and manipulated the coloring.

"I plan to print the background on a Canon premium matte paper (right now I don't have it in the right size) and the Eiffel Tower photo on a Canon semi-gloss photo paper then use actual grosgrain ribbon on it. "

Note: Submissions to the Universal Scrapbook of "dream signifiers" do not have to be as "finished" as this example. Any questions, feel free to post here or email Fhung at the above link.
