Our first catch in Ames, IA. Traffic was light because of the city celebration in Boone. They were running a short passenger train west over the Kate Shelley High Bridge to Ogden and back every hour for UP employees. (More on this train later.)

I wanted to create a painted effect so here's what I did.

Did a subtle crop. Ran a levels adj. layer, layered on several textures and various blend mode layers. I've found that doing this helps create a painted effect. Removed some texture from the flowers. Cooled down the colour slightly. Added a slight blur layer and a soft light layer. Upped the brightness a bit and added white and black colour fill layers (set on screen and multiply) and masked as necessary. Saturated the red and green a touch and sharpened.

Editing in the colors of shot can give DRASTIC results. When I finished this one, I shocked myself at what I had created. She looks older to me in this.

Converted to b&w and then worked with the split tone controls in Lightroom 2.

Strobist: had the sb600 just above head height and to the right of the shot. She was standing mostly in the shade.

These are ooooold (for me)

Today was spent editing a thesis for a friend. Slightly painful only because it was literally about paint analysis and watching and waiting for paint to dry. The upside is she gave me some pretty pictures in her thesis to look at! :)
