The Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh’s home for bold new writing and contemporary performance, stands ready for tonight’s world premiere of Black Hole Sign by Uma Nada-Rajah (8–18 October 2025). Known for championing cutting-edge Scottish and international work since its founding in 1963, the Traverse continues to push boundaries and provoke thought from its base just off Lothian Road.
Black Hole Sign, directed by Gareth Nicholls, explores the emotional gravity and moral complexity of life within the NHS. Set in the charged environment of a hospital waiting room, the play examines the toll of care, compassion, and collapse — and what happens when those who heal are pulled into the darkness themselves.
A striking mural on the outer wall of St John’s Episcopal Church, Princes Street, confronting the chaos of modern life. With a central figure overwhelmed by symbols of consumerism, digital distraction, and control, it’s a potent cry of resistance nestled between Gothic spires and passing shoppers. The church’s longstanding support for social justice and the arts makes this an ever-evolving space for dialogue in paint.

The Bluebird offers plates of food suitable for meat-eaters and non-meat eaters alike. And while cafe culture of Edinburgh is nothing like the pre-telecommunication situation of Paris in the 1920s it does offer people a pleasant space for meeting and conversation away from work or home. For some diners the wifi is an added utility to conduct business or leisure looking into a subject when connectivity is restricted on one's low-budget mobile data plan or absence of Internet access at home.
