Johann is a "genuine physical medium" who can manifest his body's spiritual essence as ectoplasm and project it into the ethereal plane. While performing a séance one day, there was an enormous psychic accident in China half a world away that sent a catastrophic shockwave through the ethereal plane and destroyed Johann's body, leaving him trapped as an ectoplasmic spirit.

 

The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (B.P.R.D.) found him and devised a special containment suit, complete with bubble head. Johann then joined the Bureau; the B.P.R.D. Johann joined shortly after Hellboy left the Bureau, so they've never actually met.

Ainsi qu’il est parfaitement admis que la musique génère des images dans l’esprit de celui qui l’écoute, il n’en est pas moins vrai que l’image porte en elle ses propres sonorités. Dimension sans laquelle elle n’aurait pas même cette faculté d’accrocher le regard.

 

Ainsi l'appréhender c’est bien évidemment voir, mais c’est aussi entendre. Mieux encore écouter. S’avouer perméable à ces sons, qu’ils viennent du plus profond de l’inconscient individuel ou qu’ils appartiennent à la mémoire collective, en l’absence desquels l’image photographique ne serait qu’ectoplasme vide de toute réalité, de toute identité, pire, de tout reflet.

 

Qu’elle témoigne des bruissements d’une ville ou des fracas de la guerre, des clameurs humaines ou des humeurs animales ou bien encore de ces chuchotements dont sont pleins des silences évidemment pluriels, toute image est empreinte, à la fois, des sonorités d’une réalité objective, de celles que le photographe interprète ou compose et des résonances qu’elle suscite chez celui qui l’observe. Musique intime inscrite dans les souvenirs de chacun, dans son imaginaire ou dans sa propre histoire.

 

Elle est le résultat d'une complexe alchimie qui met en jeu l’éveil de tous nos sens. Ne parle t’on pas, en effet, de couleur pour définir un son, de bruit pour qualifier les éléments qui, parfois, parasitent la vision ou de matière pour évoquer le modelé et les tonalités que dessine la lumière.

 

La perception d’une image est donc le fruit de cette interaction de tous les champs du sensoriel. Et le son, dont il est question ici une de ses composantes les plus flagrantes. L’ entrée la plus aisée peut-être pour capter, au delà, les saveurs, sentir et toucher les infinies vérités d’une image.

 

Assourdissants parfois, subtils le plus souvent, ces sons n’ en sont pas moins indissociables de sa réalité. Parfaitement perceptibles, identifiables et identifiés dès lors que l’on s’attarde. Car poser un regard véritable c’est également prêter une oreille attentive.

 

C’est donc à cette écoute, ou plus précisémént à la reconnaissance du fond sonore, propre à chaque images que le festival Nicephore + 167 entend vous inviter cette année. Toucher du bout des yeux qu’il suffit de regarder pour entendre… D’écouter pour mieux voir.

Sean McCullough, creator of McCullough's Miscellanea, creates each piece completely by hand. As he collects items here and there, no two pieces will ever be the same. Materials often used are plastic, cardboard, and wire.

In the form and subversion of a Victorian seance my improvised vocal/ body sound is channeled thorough a ‘spirit trumpet’ and light. Variations of frequency cause undulations of vibrations of the trumpet against on a metal plate, and patterns of flashing / flickering light : whilst my features are transformed by a mask of yeast/fungus.

Following my recent series, Ectoplasm, I broadened my interest away from suppression of women through mediumship and to sexual suppression of women on the whole. I am interested in the psychoanalyst concept of 'Oral Fixation', as proposed by Sigmund Freud and how this relates to human beings in their mannerisms and characteristics. Exploring the sexual connotations and metaphors given behind roses and rose petals, I created this photo series in a response to expressing how I feel in regards to suppression of female sexuality and its relation to sin within society.
