Arnold is back in a new Terminator movie. I could say out loud that damn, he’s old, and why? Then I ask myself why hating on something that has an amazing trailer to shock you into actually giving it a chance. Yeah…Why not?

The use of RCTs has a long history in economics, but has recently greatly expanded, particularly in economic development. Like other econometric methods, RCTs are often informative, but like other econometric methods, they have problems and pitfalls that are not always fully understood. Common misunderstandings include balance, standard errors and inference, and blinding. We argue that the concepts of internal and external validity as commonly used are unhelpful. We focus on how to use the results of RCTs, arguing that simple replication is rarely useful, but rather that the results of RCTs need to be combined with other knowledge and evidence, and used as part of a serious economic analysis. Examples are provided along the way.

The Alan Walters Building. Sir Walters became a lecturer in Econometrics at the University of Birmingham in 1951. In 1961, he was appointed Professor of Econometrics and Social Statistics and remained at the University until 1968, when he went to the London School of Economics as Sir Ernest Cassel Professor of Economics. He was also Chief Economic Adviser to Margaret Thatcher's Government, as well as Economic Adviser to the World Bank. The name of the building was selected after Alan Walter’s widow gave a generous gift in his memory.
