On September 7, 2025, a spectacular total lunar eclipse took place, also known as a blood moon. From Amsterdam, the moon rose already fully in Earth’s shadow. This meant that, low on the horizon, the moon immediately revealed its deep red glow. In this photo, the moment is beautifully captured: the moon seems to glow, with an orange hue along its lower edge and dark lunar seas and craters standing out more clearly in the softer light. Around the moon, stars and planets are visible that you would normally not see during a full moon, when its light is too bright. To the left of the moon, the planet Saturn can be seen, recognizable by its warm, light-orange color. Below and to the right shines the bright star Fomalhaut. Higher up in the sky, Altair from the Summer Triangle is also visible. A beautiful phenomenon: a rare alignment of moon, stars, and planet that can only be seen this clearly a few times per decade. The next total lunar eclipse will take place on New Year’s Eve in 2028.
On September 7, 2025, the moon rose over Amsterdam already deep in Earth’s shadow, glowing a coppery red in a stunning total lunar eclipse. Stars and planets appeared clearly around it — with Saturn glowing softly nearby, Fomalhaut shining below, and Altair high above — creating a rare and magical night sky.
Op 7 september 2025 vond een spectaculaire totale maansverduistering plaats, ook wel bekend als een bloedmaan. Vanaf Amsterdam kwam de maan op terwijl ze al volledig in de schaduw van de aarde stond. Dat betekende dat de maan, laag boven de horizon, direct haar diep rode gloed liet zien. Op de foto is dit moment prachtig vastgelegd: de maan lijkt te gloeien, met een oranje gloed aan de onderzijde en donkere maanzeeën en kraters die extra goed zichtbaar zijn dankzij het zachtere licht. Rondom de maan zijn sterren en planeten zichtbaar die je normaal niet ziet tijdens een volle maan, omdat deze anders te fel is. Links van de maan is de planeet Saturnus te zien, herkenbaar aan zijn warme, lichtoranje kleur. Rechtsonder schittert de heldere ster Fomalhaut. Verderop, hoger aan de hemel, stond ook Altair uit de Zomerdriehoek te fonkelen. Een prachtig fenomeen: een zeldzaam samenspel van maan, sterren en planeet dat slechts een paar keer per decennium zo mooi te zien is. De volgende volledige maansverduistering is in 2028 op oudjaarsdag.

Les contours sont déchirés comme des filaments d’encre dans l’eau.
La scène semble peinte, hors du temps, entre nature et abstraction.
🎨 Les couleurs : bleu pétrole profond, rose pâle irisé, blanc cendré et reflets violacés.
Cette palette n’est pas réaliste – elle est visionnaire.
Le bleu évoque la profondeur du mental,
le rose la tendresse cachée dans l’intensité solaire,
le blanc la transcendance,
et les reflets pourpres la transformation spirituelle.
🔮 Symboliquement, cette image est un passage.
L’éclipse, en tant que phénomène, a toujours été perçue comme une suspension du réel,
un point de bascule entre deux états du monde –
le visible et l’invisible, la lumière et son repli, la conscience et sa frontière.
️️ Le bâtiment sombre en bas à droite ancre la composition dans le terrestre.
Il rappelle que toute contemplation du ciel s’effectue toujours à partir d’un lieu, d’un corps, d’une ombre.

Here is a collage of my images from today's total solar eclipse here in Ohio. It was such an amazing experience, so much more than I had anticipated.
This is what's left of the Sun as the Moon started to pass in front of it, creating the spectacular, almost total solar eclipse.
The slightly cloudy tissue allowed for enhanced photographic opportunities for everyone, whereas a completely clear sky would have made for much more tricky conditions to create credible images.
The colours and hue of the sky around the eclipse were breathtaking and featured everything from black to pure white.
In Scotland's Capital the conditions were near to perfect with a blue sky tinged with a light cloud cover, allowing for excellent viewing and good photo opportunities.
In Edinburgh, around 9.15am a bright and beautiful Spring morning suddenly became quite mystic and twilight like. The temperature dropped as the unusual shadows from the sun's raze developed a pinkish tint. The birds stopped singing as crowds started to fill the streets from houses and offices.
And whether or not your knew the person you were standing beside or passing there was a delightful sense of comradeship and everyone shared this momentous occasion happily.
While the Moon passed in front of the Sun today so the birds thought twilight had struck early. This triggered some night-time behaviour as nocturnal animals like owls and bats were reported to having become more alert. At the end of the eclipse I noted a sudden crescendo of bird song as the re-emergence of the Sun triggered a second dawn chorus.
On Skye and Orkney around 97 per cent of the Sun was covered, but for the total solar eclipse you'd have to have visited the Faroes or Northern Scandinavia, where the Sun will be totally covered for around two minutes.
The next total eclipse anywhere near the UK will be in 2081 in central Europe, and finally in Britain in 2090. A partial eclipse will occur in Britain in 2026.
This shot is of what's left of the Sun when the Moon had nearly passed in front of it, almost completely. Note the pinkish shades all around and this created a mystical period as we mere mortals gazed in awe.
I hadn't really thought much about the eclipse to be honest until, on this sunny Friday morning in Edinburgh, the sky began to darken around 9.15am and most unusually I was at home. I noticed people gathering in the streets and everyone seemed to be chatting and becoming more enthused at the happenings as every minute passed.
Camera at the ready I decided to see for myself. Outside the light had become strange, a mystical and fantastic beauty emerged in a pink glow - the clouds around the sun were almost black and then pure white - a white I hadn't seen before - strongly potent and not for gazing at with the naked eye. The clouds however provided an opportunity for everyone to look up and take pictures.
This was the Moon passing in front of the Sun and there was nothing anybody could do about it - I love that about the weather and the Earth's natural functions. We have no power.
