From iconic to over-the-top, the ‘80s was one of the most influential decades in fashion, pop culture, and even politics. You can approach this theme from any perspective you can think of: No idea, shoulder pad or hairstyle is too big! Your doll could pay tribute to one of her favorite style or music icons of the '80s as seen on a teen magazine or music cassette cover. She could be a mallrat, shopping for a punk leather jacket and lace gloves. Is your doll getting physical by sporting leotards and leg warmers like video workout queen/actress Jane Fonda, or is he about to cut footloose a la Kevin Bacon at an '80s themed costume party? From your doll sitting in a room with Duran Duran and Princess Diana posters on the wall, to riding in a sleek, "talking" Pontiac Trans AM, let your imagination go as wild as the decade!
Insight on my Submission:
I was so tempted to do a rock concert theme with Jem and Pizzazz, but my Muse has been wanting to do this picture for a while. I actually wanted to do this for the "Tribute to Barbie" competition, but time slipped away so quickly.
When I received Alysa. I was blown away by her makeup. It totally channeled the 80's Barbies I used to have. Alysa helped fill the void of my childhood Barbies. So I decided to go the route my muse wanted and picked Alysa to star in this Everything 80s challenge.
Alysa is getting ready for prom. She of course couldn't skip her nightly outing at the roller rink. She lost track of time, so she is eating soup on top of the washing machine while jamming out to one of her favorite mixed tapes that she made, which is really heavy with Duran Duran and The Go-Go's song selections. While waiting for her post-prom outfit to finish washing.
She is still indecisive. She can't decide if she wants to wear the short hot pink dress, or the glitzy sequined prom dress, for prom tonight. ;)
The next portrait addition to my on going project based on personal photographs taken of the cast of characters from various Renaissance Festivals and Scottish Highland Games. 5x7 oil on panel.
Yesterday the weather was fantastic so it was a great opportunity to head out and Port Dover was the destination. I had assumed I might get some shots of the lighthouse or sailboats and certainly I did that but it was this fellow in his customized Model T that was the most interesting to me. I stopped him in the parking lot just as he was driving away and asked if I could get a picture. He was most obliging but there was only a moment since he was blocking someone and he zoomed away leaving a wake of turned heads and amazed stares. Customized or antique cars are not an uncommon sight in a place like Port Dover but this Model T did have the unique factor covered ....right up to the trunk.
This man struck me as one who matched his car down to a 'T'..... eccentric and colourful.

Today I met the most wonderful old gentleman staying in the YMCA Hotel where I work. He is completely unique, eccentric to the max and a sheer delight to talk to. His name is Yoshio Uchida from Nagoya, Japan.
He showed me his passport stamps and has been travelling to every corner of the globe, including Kenya, India, Cambodia, Canada and many other places. He also showed me all his old passport photos and it was so delightful to see the metamorphis from staunch Japanese business man in crisp suit and tie, then the photos show him gradually growing a beard and abandoning the conservative suit, then it shows the beard growing longer and longer, until he finally morphs into the amazing, dynamic, magnificent personality I met today.
When I pulled out my camera he was such a complete ham, he struck a bunch of different poses, each of them more outrageous than the one before it. He had everyone in the hotel lobby in stitches. When my staff introduced me as manager of our hotel , Mr. Uchida pulled the most hilarious face, as though he was an actor in Japanese Kabuki theatre, and he let out a huge Kabuki-style roar showing his distaste for managers (all with a twinkle and wink in his eye). He did this for the sheer pleasure of my staff, and we all howled with laughter. He is a complete gem!!!! Afterwards he gave me a beautiful bracelet with Chinese stones. What a completely delightful man!!
I think some day when I retire I will do the same, cast all conventions and protocol to the wind ..... just throw myself on the ocean of adventure and experience life to the fullest. Seize the Day !!!

For the past several years I have been creating portraits in photographs, drawings and paintings of a unique collection of people who attend of work at a wide variety of Renaissance, Celtic, Scottish, Irish festivals. This has been a great way to practice my portrait skills and celebrate this groups of individuals. I have long wanted to call the series "The Eccentrics" and some day exhibit the collection. As I am also an eccentric it feels like a great endeavor. 5X7 Oil on Canvas - Portrait practice inspired by a personal photograph of a Renaissance Festival character.

I don't know what it is with me, but I love detail shots of steam locomotive rods, pistons and cranks. They are so simple, yet complex at the same time. Norfolk & Western engine 611 sat outside the shops at the Strasburg Railroad, and I was able to get up close for a while. Here you're looking at the Eccentric Rod, Eccentric Crank, Eccentric Crank Pin, and the Main Rod on the locomotive's left side. I was excited to have a member of the VMT steam crew explain how the Baker Valve Gear and the Reverser work.....I finally get it!!!
