Car tail lights trails on a dirt road through the Alabama Hill, under a starry night sky.
Miles Morgan does it better: Both Miles and I photographed this dirt road, exposing the streaking tail lights of our cars. Miles took a narrower view from the hill to the right, just above the road —allowing him to shoot from a higher position and capture more of an "S" curve composition to the road. Instead of shooting in the middle of the night like I did, he shot in the pre-dawn hour and used the setting moon in the sky rather than stars. I think you'll agree that his "blue hour" shot tops my starry night view! After admiring his great photograph, be sure to scroll down and read the story behind the image. It's worth the time. Miles is just as good with a pen as he is with a camera.
Exploring the Alabama Hills: I just returned from a week-long scouting trip in the Alabama Hills of Eastern California, where I will be conducting a starry "NightScape" workshop in April 2014 (we will also be doing a lot of daytime photography).
My new ebook, Milky Way NightScapes, gives extensive details on my style of starry night landscape photography. Four chapters cover planning, scouting, forecasting star/landscape alignment, light painting, shooting techniques and post processing.

Driving throughout Jackson Hole, WY and Yellowstone one can see many falls. One that comes to mind are the cascading falls from Taggart Lake which you cross over within 10 minutes from the parking lot. And there are many others.
So here's one upon my first approach I could see the first shot instantly and immediatlely set up the tripod and took the shot. My guess is that overall this waterfall is about 70 feet. As I came closer to the falls I noticed the little waters jets streaming out and in additional comps of this they are much more visible.
No HDR here ... just 3 photos shot 1EV apart and blended within Photoshop so in effect I have more natural realism in the wide dynamic range of light among the 3 photos without any of the associated grunge effect seen in a lot of hdr rendered photos.

Forgive me Flickr friends for a moment of indulgence.
I've put together a photo eBook, but, unlike most, it doesn't teach settings of our machines or of composition.
My connection to nature was first increased through poetry, rather than through paintings or photographs. It seemed logical for me to combine the two, using the words of an unknown writer, but a likeminded individual.
Recently, the eBook received positive feedback, giving me the kick I needed to give it a bit more visibility.
If you are interested, there is more detail about the eBook and some sample pages on my website:
Or you can see the product page on my Gumroad site, though my site has more detail.

I hope all Flickr friends won't find this moment of indulgence too intrusive, I won't post the image to groups of course. That'd be too spammy!
Please check out the eBook if you're interested!
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best wishes everyone, hope you have a great weekend.
Tony

My new e-book has been released! It took a deadline and a pandemic with a shelter-in-place order, but I've finally completed and released my new e-book, "Get Intimate: Making a Personal Statement with Intimate Landscapes." Published by Mother Nature Publishing, it is for photographers and anyone who wants to understand and appreciate what goes into making artful compositions.
In it, I share all I know about photography, art, and design to offer new ways of seeing the landscape and telling your visual story. From how to approach a subject to which compositional tools to use, you’ll be shown how to see differently, and to make images that are not only captivating, but also lasting, satisfying and a source of pride.
Whether you make photographs with your iPhone, DSLR, or mirrorless camera, create compositions with more emotional impact.

Have good weekend!
Of the three, this is the one that I had the most fun writing. Sometimes, I find that characters take off, and have a life of their own, which reveals itself as you write, often surprising you. I'd be interested to hear if this is anyone else's experience. Anyway, this tale of Paul and his buddy Dave was great fun to write.
I've published three erotic novellas - they're available on Amazon. You can get all three for under 3 dollars/euros/pounds. Other books focus on rugby players and doctors. If you struggle to find them, drop me a note and I'll send a link. Adult material needs to be enabled in your Amazon search.

Announcing the eBook version of Sky Crystals, THE resource for photographing and studying snowflakes!
skycrystals.ca/product/sky-crystals-unraveling-the-myster...
For the first time ever, Sky Crystals is introduced as a digital download and at a special sale price of $14.99. If you’ve ever wanted to reveal the magic of winter macro photography with your camera, this 304-page book reveals every technique I use for photographing snowflakes. No secrets held back!
As a FREE BONUS, you’ll also get a water droplet refraction primer to download, showing you how to turn water droplets into tiny lenses and reveal the hidden beauty of simple physics. If you have the equipment for snowflake photography, you’ve got almost everything you need for this additional photographic adventure!
The culmination of years of photography and study of snowflakes, this 304-page hardcover book will detail the science, photography and techniques, and even delve into why we find snowflakes beautiful. I keep the explanations easy to understand and graphic, but the science is fascinating and there are still many unanswered questions.
Considering this eBook is only one-third the cost of the hardcover version, this is an exceptional deal. Traveling some place remote with a good chance of snow? Load this PDF into iBooks / Google Play Books and keep it with you always. Originally written around a two-page spread design, you’ll be given links to download a single-page or spread-page layout, whichever works best for you.
Why Snowflakes?
Snowflakes: These tiny creations of winter have been a curiosity during most childhoods spent in Canada. As I grew up, I became less and less interested in these “trivial” curiosities, and only recently reconnected with them through the lens of my camera. As with most macro subjects, when photographing snowflakes there are many “what the heck is that?” moments as something mysterious is captured, and that childhood curiosity is reborn.
Using a steady hand, an old mitten, and freshly falling snow, you can produce an image worthy of sparking that childhood wonder in even the most jaded onlookers. Some people don’t believe my images are real, and that’s when I know I’ve created something worth talking about. Of course, some people simply think I’m crazy watching me take pictures of an old mitten in a snow storm.
Standing in frigid temperatures a meter away from comfort and warmth can be a daunting task. Using macro equipment that gives you incredibly little focus, it can be hard to even find a snowflake in the viewfinder. Freezing hands and shivering arms can make the situation worse. However, once you’ve got your first snowflake, you’ll smile at every snowfall from then on. But until you succeed, people will think you’re crazy for trying.
Forecasts predict an abundance of snow this year – I know I’ll be shooting every single snowfall. How about you?
