I took an early morning hike to Eaton Falls. From the Pinecrest gate, it is a 1.25 mile hike in with 11 creek crossings. The water was really flowing because of all the rain in Southern California this past season. I arrived early enough on a weekday to have the place to myself for a while before the first group of hikers arrived. Altadena, California, USA, May 2023

What a perfect morning this was! I saw the forecast was for clear skies, and patchy fog in the early morning hours. I had been here the week before but there were a bunch of photographers in the spot I wanted to shoot from, so I knew I wanted to come back and decided to go for a pre-sunrise shoot. I ended up having the whole place to myself! All along the way driving to this location I went in and out of patchy fog, so I knew there would be a good chance of the lake being fogged in. What I didn't expect was for it to be so calm, which made for perfect mirror-like reflections. The grassy shoreline caught my eye here with the shapes formed by the reflection.
Network Rail are part way through removing vegetation on the route of the Toyota car train, and the section between Trent and Toton is currently being worked on. On 31/08/22 6K50 1514 Toton-Basford Hall led by 66418 passes through Long Eaton Town on a recently cleared section, I'm stood next to a large tree that hasn't been dealt with yet, but once it is the shot from the footbridge will be on once more.
Had to go to Retford Hospital for a regular appointment yesterday and made a point of taking small detours to photograph two Anglican churches, one in Gamston and here in Eaton, close to Retford.
More images will be posted over the coming days but thought that I would start off with this image of a very narrow and colourful door at the Church of the All Saints, in Eaton. No idea why it is so narrow and have been unable to get much information about this little church as a whole. Perhaps someone has ideas and most probably witty comments?

A shot taken almost 46 years ago to the day uploaded for historical value. And, if you're lucky enough to have the space to model Trent Station back in the 1950s / early 1960s with plentiful 9Fs, 8Fs, Duck 6s, Jubes, D1-10 Peaks, Sulzer Type 2, etc etc, then this image just might be helpful.
In the distant past known as Long Eaton Junction Signal Box, this structure controlled the line to Trent Junction from Attenborough / Nottingham, as well as the by now lifted line to Erewash Junction and Long Eaton station, the track bed of which is still visible curving right under the flyover-line bridge a couple of hundred yards away.
Long Eaton station closed in January 1967 (at which time the name was transferred to the then Sawley Junction station), and presumably the curve from just here to Erewash Junction was lifted shortly afterwards.
Along with so many other signal boxes in the area, its final ignominy came in 1969 with the commissioning of Trent Power Box. However, unlike many of the other redundant boxes which saw swift demolition, this one soldiered on as the Meadow Lane Crossing Shunting Frame for several more years, its role simply to open and close the crossing gates over Meadow Lane.
Advances in camera technology finally made it redundant when control of the crossing was passed to Trent Power Box, and the structure was demolished.
Trent Power Box itself was closed in 2013, after 44 years of service, and control passed to Derby Signalling Centre.
For local road users, delays weren't too bad when this shot was taken but, with the much more intensive contemporary timetables, train frequency has significantly increased. So, if you live on this side of the tracks, your only way out by car is over this crossing - and hearsay suggests the barriers can be down upwards of 40 minutes in every hour. Ouch :(

Railfreight Petroleum liveried 66794 passes Little Eaton on the outskirts of Derby on Sunday 10/10/21 with 6G36 1700 Blackwell South Jn-Toton via Barrow Hill/Derby, running just under 2 hours early. Drone.

The consist was made up of mostly ex Caledonian Sleepers going for storage.
37421 & 37219 pass through Long Eaton town on 05/09/22 with 1Q46 0852 RTC-Knighton-Toton-Loughborough-Toton-Tyseley PLPR test train. It's a good job I set up for this, it was a no hope for sun, but as they came up to the crossing it brightened up a little in a small bright patch in the cloud, then there was a slight shadow, then virtually full sun, phew !
On 10/09/09 60059 brings 6K50 1502 Toton-Basford Hall through Long Eaton town, the rear of the train adjacent to the former station.
LA has several fires going at the same time. We live close to the Eaton fire. This is smoke from that.

Immaculately turned out in Inter-City Swallow livery, Class 90 No 90001 'Royal Scot' rounds the curve at Eaton Lane with 1Z46, the 08.10 York - London Euston (via Wembley) LSL private charter.
Still on the Scottish theme, I nipped out to Eaton Lane for 'Royal Scotsman' land cruise this evening. 66743 catches the fading summer sun with 1Z84 1747 Cambridge to Scarborough. 13th July 2016

UP's Greeley Sub has a large number of industries that are served in most of the towns the line passes through. The town of Eaton is no exception, as you can see the various industries lined up along the mainline as a southbound manifest rolls on clear (green) signals through the middle of town.

One to try again, I had the idea of trying to get one going over the High level as one went under, but on a strike day with very little traffic around wasn't the day to do it. I also got caught out by early running, not able to get the drone in position to take the freight as it just comes off the bridge over the Nottingham line. And with the shadows, it may be one that has to wait until next year... However, 66783 is captured working 4Z59 0730 Ratcliffe-Immingham HIT, dodging the shadows on the Down High Level line, 20/08/22.
Last dregs of light at Little Eaton for 43303 leading 1E63 15.27 Plymouth to Leeds. 43239 was the rear powercar. Pole shot. 17/08/23.
When the Eaton's department store chain went under, their flagship Toronto location was converted to multistory big box retail (including, curiously, a Canadian Tire without any parking -- although it's more of a generalist than the name suggests) with university classrooms above.
(Correction: this is a new-build structure on what previously was an Eaton Centre parking garage.)
